1. The role PCS in Amkor Technology
Introduction
I work in Amkor Technology as PCS (Planning & Customer Service), being in
charge of 4 customers: Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Microchip, and Avalink. For
those customers, I am responsible for TI DLP line and Lead Frame line. As a planner, I
mainly focus on communicating and being a bridge connecting customers and
production line folks. My works include manufacturing planning, cycle time control,
material control, customer reception, etc. Providing customer oriented services is
the spirit of my work. I usually follow up what customers need positively, fighting for
sufficient capacity and keeping an eye on quality and process to avoid mis-
operations which would cause negative impact on company. I am strict to myself in
providing manufacturing schedule, capacity, and material status in time for
customers. In addition, I am proactive to provide what customer “would” want to
avoid communication delays and production inefficiency for customers in different
time zones. The following contests illustrate several aspects concerning my work.
Forecast management
Forecast is the demand estimated by customer. As PCS, I need to confirm with
customer about their orders and give instructions to line based on available capacity.
Data source is sent by customer or sales and the following actions will be done when
new data source is released:
1. To confirm available capacity allocation with line planner.
2. To confirm material availability with material planners.
3. Review changes for upside/downside between previous/new versions. We need
to focus on the following aspects:
- Overall Qty
- Major devices upside/downside
- If any new device ramp up or old device go to end of life (zero out)
- Seasonal up or down…etc
4. Need to clarify demand pull in or upside, push out or downside
5. Timely Maintain FCST in SAP system then confirm no entry errors.
6. To request customer or sales team for excess MTL depletion
7. Any capacity or material issue should be escalated to MGR/Director
Scheduling
After clarifying customer demand, PCS need to schedule for manufacturing to
deliver finished goods in time based on customer’s requests. The following factors
2. are the key for scheduling:
1. UPH and daily machine capacity by process or PDL (Package/Dimension/Lead
count).
2. Specialty (depends on device specific request).
3. Tool quantity. Please refer to attachment for TI capacity model for monthly
scheduling as an example.
4. Total WIP (Work in Production) control upon cycle time goal. For lead frame
products, average C/T is 6 days. For TI DLP line, different C/T is set for various
product types.
5. Lot size should be worked out with MFG team to finalize optimal Qty.
Material control
PCS should be responsible for customer consigned materials such as wafer,
substrate, window, and so on. The following info should be proper managed for
material control:
1. Need to know supplier
2. Need to know MTL lead time from IQA to release for urgent need
3. Need to review if consigned MTL can support demand without interrupting
loading plan
4. Need to provide customer consigned MTL inventory report upon customer
request
5. To use customer consigned MTL as priority
SWR arrangement
PCS should also help customer arrange SWR (Special working Requirement). It
can be called engineering lot as well. PCS should check if it is a new device, if yes
then apply new FG# request to coordinate product Engr/MDM team to expedite
document / system readiness. We also should check each SWR’s purpose and
validate if it belongs to 1st mass production lot. If Yes, PCS needs to check product
engr if marking spec (form) has been released by DCC (internal Document Control
Center) or should take containment action to release to line but use future hold prior
laser mark process in INSITE system (internal manufacturing systems). And follow up
to confirm if MFG received formal mark spec from DCC. Upon confirmation and
release future hold from INSITE system.
Hold function request from customer to PCS
Customer may need PCS to help hold finished good, WIP, or incoming materials
to keep product quality. PCS need to play the role of communicating whining the
3. whole process.
1. Finished good hold action:
PCS should send a hold request to warehouse & QA to enable FG hold “restrict”
function in SAP upon customer’s request. QA should validate hold in SAP. If PCS get
customer’s release then should notify WH/QA to release upon formal instruction
(email…etc) from customer. QA should gate if the lot can be released.
2. WIP hold:
PCS should send an email to notify MFG team/QA/Engrs by attaching customer’s
request. PCS can put a future process hold upon request prior the concerned process
or any Quality concern should notify QA/MFG to handle the hold procedure directly.
3. MTL hold:
Send a hold request to WH & QA to enable MTL hold “restrict” function in SAP upon
customer’s request. QA should validate hold in SAP. If PCS get customer’s release
then should notify WH/QA to release hold upon formal instruction (email…etc) from
customer. QA should gate if lot can be released
Shipment arrangement
We need to proactively update shipment information to customer, especially
respond before customer’s asking will be positive to win customer’s trust. To
properly arrange shipment for customer, we need to confirm the following info:
1. Customer’s priority list on different products.
2. If customer allow weekend shipment arrangement on Sat, Sun and holidays
(extra delivery fee concern).
3. Flight schedule vs forwarder pick up time
4. MFG turn in stock time, shipping & document readiness required lead time
5. Need to know if device belongs “export permit of strategic hi-tech” commercial
or military product. This concerns is on the national security, foreign policy, and
nonproliferation interests of the United States.
