The document discusses the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery's efforts to digitize their collections and make them available online. It describes how they transitioned from an internal collection database in 1998 called MOLLI to launching their World Cultures website in 2009. It also discusses how they identified priorities and kept the project on track using analytics, feedback, and agile project management tools like Trello to involve staff and achieve the funder's objectives on a limited budget. The end result was a successful online presence for the museum's collections at http://rammworldcultures.org.uk/.

5. Putting funding and
aspiration into action
To go from an internal collections
database and galleries to an online
presence
Think first, agree aims, decide on
resources, incorporate into work
plan, then act!
6. Using past work and
experience
From MOLLI in 1998 to
World Cultures online
2009
7. What did we do next?
Used analytics, feedback, funder’s objectives
and our resources to create a list of priorities
8. Keep it on track
... and keep your people involved
UAT – we used Trello https://trello.com/
Hello
Talking about our World Cultures collection’s and its new website
Before getting into that a brief mention of why museums use digital technologies
We love visitors and communicating with them
Providing information about our collections is a key part of why we work in museums – not just a love of old stuff
Digital lets us tell stories and allows visitors to respond
Nearly all museums only have a fraction of their collection on display
Most in store
Space and conservation limit displays
Digital opens the store to everyone with an Internet connection
Rosy glow around making information available but what we can do is limited by the F word – Funding
All museums are limited by their funding
Mix of sources RAMM LA and ACE plus specific grants
Other sources donations, fundraising, philanthropy
All funding applications competitive including ACE
Use analytics, feedback, funder’s objectives and our resources to create a list of priorities
Thinking and doing
Practical approach took us from Museum Open Learning Initiative in 1998 using as many new technologies as possible to a revamped website in2009
2009 version stripped out non-working elements, updated content but mainly translated website into RAMM look and feel
2014 Designation funding focussed on needs of collection and website
Website –
better object management – more than a slideshow
Themes – drop dated and unused ones
More focus on galleries and collection
Join research to RAMM research collection
Blog for curator to keep visitors updated on Designation project and other collections activities
Reality meant limited budget so WordPress, collections plugin and collections API
Grabbed opportunity to develop uniform look and feel for RAMM sub sites
Chose developer who had museum and collection API experience ie spoke our language and knew of pitfalls
Limited budget so made it clear what was expected from all staff involved
Limited time period so focussed attention
User Acceptance Testing – recommended by Thirty8 Digital of Bude we used Trello
Challenges:
We used our main online collections database’s API to import object information, images and categories into the new website. We were pleased how well this worked although getting the categories right was more of a challenge
Getting the volume of content into place for the deadline despite the themes being reduced
IE 11
Result was site visits rose from a couple of hundred to 3K in first month
Positive feedback and curator able to update site
Any Qs?
