1. Position Paper
Committee: Political
Issue: Nuclear Disarmament
Country: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
Delegate: Rhea Singh
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland believes that the use of various nuclear technologies should be reduced. The Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston, where the warheads for Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons system are made, is now blockaded by the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland are beginning to have lots of anti-nuclear movements, which other countries like France support.
The UK Trident submarines go to sea with 48 warheads that are equivalent to 380 Hiroshima bombs. The UK is now trying to use the least nuclear technology as possible. Official government statistics tell us that the UK’s energy consumption in 2007 showed nuclear accounting for just 15% of the total electricity supply. This is the lowest level the UK has had for 21 years. If we, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland do not start taking action, our country will plunge into darkness by 2020. This is one of the reasons why the UK has started following nuclear disarmament and is now supporting it.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland are facing major economic issues. This is greatly affecting them because thanks to this crisis, their nuclear disarmament plans are slowing down. Another problem is that the UK has to remember its responsibilities in the United Nations in the field of disarmament, arms control and nonproliferation. Supporting those and also working on reducing nuclear technologies with an economic crisis is becoming a problem. Therefore, supporting nuclear disarmament is quite difficult for them at the moment, but they will not stop supporting it.
