Introduction
Change is inevitable, the world has undergone a lot of transforms up to the current 21st
century. Homosexuality, desire, and interest in having sexual relations with people of the same
gender. This module entails a detailed analysis on the criteria used in the diagnosis of
homosexuals, how homosexual individuals were affected and how society accepts the fact that
homosexuality is there.
Psychiatric condition to be considered a psychiatric impairment, it must either frequently
cause subjective trouble, or be related with a few generalized impedance in social functioning.
All of the other mental disorders in DSM-11 meet either of these two criteria except
homosexuality (Drescher2015). The only method homosexuality could be considered psychiatric
disorder was the criteria of failure to function heterosexually.
Significant numbers of homosexuals are satisfied with their sexual orientation but other
proportions may not take so well on how they are being perceived in society and they may wish
to change. Homosexuality was termed as a disorder, making the individuals affected with
external pressure even afraid to come out in public and accept who they are.(helmi & Qureshi
2021)
Homosexual people have been rejected in the past in getting civil rights in many spheres
of life. By connecting the expulsion of homosexuality from the symptomatic classification with a
confirmation of the respectful rights of gay people, no suggestion is intended to justify the
refusal of gracious rights to people who do endure genuine psychiatric conditions (Ross2015).
In conclusion, the DSM II provides the possibility of a person who might be a
homosexual but not necessarily suffering from a psychiatric disorder. Homosexuality in society

should be viewed as the choices made voluntarily by individuals themselves not that they are
suffering from any mental illness.
