The sun
06182018.
The pulsing bright sun smiled to me, carelessly fondling my
bare skin. Her warm touch caressed my face as she reminds me
of another hopeful tomorrow. I lifted my eyes to see her and
I saw how she was tamed by the clouds that embraced her majesty.
Her radiance immediately raced into darkness as she took a
glimpse into the windows of my soul. The rosy sun understood
my bitterness and she left without asking why.

Love lost
06252018.
How do I forget the eyes that haunt my dreams and the scent
that fills my nose at each inhale? I can hear your heartbeat
every time the waves kiss the shore and the harmony of the moving
waters and sea breeze tingles my ear. As I watch free birds
gliding in the wind that guides them, I remember the whisper
of your soothing voice that gives life to every nerve in my
body. I see the bright shadow of your smile and the sparkle
in your brown, dreamy eyes that tells me I am protected. Oh,
those eyes. I can feel the warmth of your breath that gently
lands on face as you wrap your arms around me and embrace my
4
entirety. It was the last day of summer and the first of our
journey.
I reminisce the past that had been. I still do. Though we were
penniless free spirits of the high mountains, you gifted me
the unmatched happiness over simplicity rather than luxury.
My shattered heart still hoping that dream did not come true.
I think of your beaming smile, yearn for your heartbeat against
my ear, longing the amorous emprise we shared once. The sweet
happiness turned sour and bitter, overwhelmed by the abrupt
twist in our peregrination.
You left me wandering in the woods. I twirled and leaped and
finally I saw you, drenched in the crimson pool of life essence
that once ran along the subtle tunnels of your body. My angel,
my guardian, my hero, my soldier, you were holding my portrait,
pressing it against your bleeding heart. You were fallen, as
5
did our dreams when I saw you on the moist ground that became
your grave. You brought my heart with you as I live with no
foreseen future.
I never expected you to come and save me when I was engulfed
in darkness. Then, never did I expect either that you would
be gone the moment we start achieving our dreams. You left me
with nothing but an empty body and an empty soul that eternally
longed for you. Excruciating is the unasked dream that turned
into ashes when once touched and cherished.

Cosmic post
07022018.
I.
I beseech the cosmos,
“Come and lend me an angel!”
Behold! I was told,
“Search no longer for it is granted.”
II.
I search around and there was none
Beguiling moon split in half
Heavens crying crimson fluid
8
Stars falling like fireworks into sea
III.
Heaven and earth move for me
Into the abysmal void it called
The adamant wind blowing, calling
Gently my name was uttered
9
IV.
I longed, leaped, lusted
Dragging my legs upon the rocky sand
Darkness vanished in one glance
I caught an image of a broken cherubim
V.
Ebony black veil landing on her waist
Luminous glow on her beating chest
Beauty was covetous, resentful
Crowing at her broken wings
10
VI.
Lo! I stepped on shattered glass
Astonished as I am
All became clear
The wrecked silhouette is me.
VII.
The cosmos sent me beyond recognition
Vision of my glamour and glow
After all, the only angel who would save me
Should have been me.

Death did us part
08032018.
The chill of the gloomy November night cradled the thick cotton
of suit that hung on Eduardo’s shoulders. He walked on the
dreadfully long carpet that led to his confidante. Guests
gossiped as he walked past them. He brushed off glaring eyes
and continued to drag his feet until he reached his destination.
The world stopped as his eyes hovered over the barren body of
the man he saluted as a hero. The magnitude of despair in his
eyes was enormous. The mighty king he knew became insipid. He
dared look back at that agonizing night at the hospital where
his grandfather took his last breath.
14
15
“Fix your life and do what is right,” Don Melecio whispered
underneath his breath. “Always do the right thing, even if it’s
hard,” the old man said to his beloved grandson, hinting that
his time is running out. Eduardo hinted sorrow and regret in
his eyes as if he has done grave evil in his life, which the
young Cojuangco could not perceive. Eduardo simply nodded and
pressed the cold, wrinkly hands that once held his with strength.
He bit his lower lip, trying to suppress the tears that raced
to the corners of his eyes. He smiled knowing that his
grandfather no longer suffered from all the worries of the world.
As much as he’s want his only family to stay, he knew he had
to let go.
16
The young bachelor heeded Don Melecio’s last wish – to run the
hacienda in Tarlac. Eduardo had no plans of settling, he was
dynamic. He never wished to change his liberated lifestyle,
but he promised. He was a man of his word and principles. Now,
he must leave his nocturnal habit at the city, wasting money
on booze to make a man out of a naïve urchin like him.
The fields were vast with the ears of grain glowing like pools
of gold under the sun. On the other direction was tall rows
of sugarcane that was ready for harvest. The young boy smiled
as he was learning new things every day. He saw everything as
an opportunity to change himself to be a good haciendero like
his grandfather, to fulfill a promise. The sun smiled and the
wind blew. It was a life that was different from where he came
from.
17
“Señorito Eduardo, the farmers wanted to have a conversation
with you about certain matters left unsettled by Don Melecio,”
the young vibrant Rosario said. The young haciendero nodded
in recognition. He wondered what it might be about. As he entered
the room, stares from pools of angry, disappointed eyes were
upon him. “We cannot let this continue, Señorito!” exclaimed
the angry peasants. “You must give us the share of our hacienda.
It cannot go on like this. You know that. It is the law!”
18
“I am doing everything in my power to understand the agreement
first before I make any move. I understand your needs that is
why I let you stay in the hacienda for this long,” Eduardo said
calmly, trying to keep his temper. “I am telling you, Señorito.
This land will never be at peace until you do what you must.
Your grandfather knew that and he did not heed. Death will come
upon the land if you don’t listen to us,” Luis, a trusted adviser
warned Eduardo. Eduardo kept a straight face. He did not show
fear or intimidation, but deep inside he was trembling. He was
afraid of what might happen. He was told that shadows and
darkness will come upon Hacienda Luisita. He dreaded those
haunting words.
19
The tall grasses of cogon stood at the outskirts of the fields.
The young don roved his land as he reminisced moments of his
youth. He remembered he was happy playing with his grandparents,
helping then make tira-tira made from sugarcane extract. He
recalled that the sweets were as delightful as he was when he
was young. He would play with his friends along the river where
an acacia tree stood proud, boasting its abundance and greatness.
They would call it the Tagpuan as he would climb its strong
branches. He could see everything from up above, but he loved
and took delight in seeing the sun rise at dawn when it slowly
turned the sky into golden orange and pink hues. The young man
revisited his refuge, inhaling deep breaths of fresh air.
20
“Hey! What are you doing here? Who are you?” a voice echoed
from the tree. The young lad trembled in fear, thinking it was
one of the agta Rosario warned him about. He tries to hide behind
a nearby tree. Little did he know, the entity was behind him.
A hand crept on his shoulder and he almost screamed. Almost!
He would have if he had not seen the most beautiful pair of
brown eyes that gazed upon his own. He feasted his eyes on the
white, flowing dress that barely touched the ground and her
hair in the wind that she tried to tuck delicately behind her
ears. He was stricken by love at first love most ardently. He
would have kissed her. Almost! If it only weren’t for his
promise.
21
He took a quick step back. He regained his composure and took
a deep breath. “I wanted to know how vast the hacienda is,”
he answered with pride. “You know that’s not the reason why
you’re here. I saw you stare blankly ahead. You weren’t
measuring the vastness of the hacienda either,” the girl snapped.
“I am Luisita. I live and work here...and this, this is my tree.
I stay here when I feel bored.”
22
“Luisita? Your name is not familiar, is it?” Eduardo said,
smirking. “My name is Eduardo. I don’t like it when people blurt
out things that I don’t care about.”
“How arrogant! Anyway, Eduardo? You have the same name as the
inheritor of the hacienda. I heard he’s from the city and he’s
really rude.”
23
“That’s only because I am Eduardo Cojuangco. I’m not rude, I
just value direct honesty. Anyway, this is my tree. As you said,
I am the inheritor of the hacienda. So, you better run along
or I would have your family leave the hacienda,” it hurts him
to say this but he should not show his appreciation for the
beauty in front of him. He should not give in to the petty wants
of the peasants so he could keep his reputation, so he could
keep their respects. To his amusement, Luisita burst out
laughing, mocking him. “You know you can’t really do that. Our
families had a deal. I’m sure you’ve heard of that if you really
are the Eduardo Cojuangco.”
24
But, Eduardo had no idea about the deal that’s keeping him from
commanding everyone in the hacienda. Secretly, he thanked the
heavens for the agreement. At least, he could spend more time
with the girl of his dreams. Although, deep in his heart he
knew she shouldn’t love.
25
The sun shone on the golden fields. It was the golden hour.
The wind blew from across the skies and two young hearts breathed
a fresh air of relief and pure joy. The mountains had a perfect
picturesque view of the entire Hacienda Luisita, the sweet pearl
of Paniqui, Tarlac regarded as the pride of the nation and of
the Cojuangcos. “Eddie, move fast! I’m tired of you letting
me win over and over again. Come on, man up!” the little Maria
shouted at Eduardo who was struggling at the base of the hill.
26
“How could you be that fast, Maria? Are you secretly a man?
I can’t believe you! Where do you get all that energy? Look
at you, you look sickly. Hmmm... It’s the wind! It’s the wind
that brought you up there too quickly because you are so little,”
complained the defeated Eduardo. “Come on, Eddie. Stop whining
like a baby. It’s just the way of a true child of the land.
Come, I have something to show you,” Maria pulled him up and
shook him giddily. “I’ve always wanted to show you this, Eddie.
I found it when I ran away to weep when I heard you were leaving.
It is my treasure and I’m sharing it with my best friend before
he leaves me for Manila.”
27
When Eduardo reached the top of the hill, he witnessed the
beautiful horizon that stretched across the sky and projected
colors he never knew. He was enamored of what he saw. He wished
that time would stand still. “Eddie, this is the vastness of
my adoration for you. You don’t have to say it back but I do.
I never realized that I found my treasure since I met you,”
Maria fell silent when these words came out of her mouth. She
raised her head to meet the eyes that captivated her heart.
28
“I just wanted you to know this before you leave. You’re my
best friend and you’ll always have a special place in my heart,”
Maria smiled weakly, trying to hide the pain in her heart.
Eduardo moved closer, not saying a word. Both fell silent and
Eduardo wrapped his arms around her as he kissed her forehead.
From then on, Eduardo promised himself that he would come back
for Maria. He never told Maria, but he had to follow the plea
of his innocent heart. Little did he know, it would be their
last encounter. Eduardo left for Manila without telling her.
He was afraid he might not contain himself.
29
In his years of study, he motivated himself to work hard to
make Maria proud. One night, he received a letter from the
province. He was reluctant to open the letter and he regretted
opening it. There he was sent a telegram and a news clipping.
His dear Maria became one of the victims of the alleged massacre
of the children of peasants. Along with his promise, he vowed
to never love again. His dreams came to set like a sun vowing
to never shine again.
30
The night fell and Eduardo looked out of his window, reminiscing
the innocence and twinge of his memory. That night his eagerness
to revisit the past kept him awake. He stood and marched towards
his childhood chamber, which became the inventory room for
things which had fulfilled its purpose. He waltzed into the
wooden door, turning its knob to unveil the cognizant aroma
of the aged. There he saw old pictures of him with his late
mother holding his hand when he can’t even remember.
Nevertheless, he felt the warmth of her smile in that old
portrait. He scanned more into the albums until a specific
detail caught his attention. It was the smile of the little
girl he knew all too well. Beside her was the young Eduardo.
He felt a pang in his heart.
31
He glanced at the photographed one last time. He saw something
new to his memory. The young Maria had a scar on her hand. A
scar on her hand...that seemingly resembled those of Luisita.
His adrenaline shot up and immediately ran towards Maria’s old
cabin. He banged the door and he could not contain his excitement
and fear of seeing Maria who he thought was now hailed as Luisita.
Mang Luis and his wife wondered with tears in their eyes saying
that Maria had long been gone. Eduardo did not believe as he
clearly remembered Luisita who embodied the matured beauty of
his dear Maria. He knew it was her when he first dived into
the brown pools of her eyes. Without hesitation, he ran to their
special Tagpuan, the acacia tree they cherished in their youth.
32
“Maria, Maria! Come out. Show yourself! I need to talk to you,”
Eduardo begged sobbing on his knees. An orb of white light glowed
so brightly and brought Eduardo to a dimension different from
ours. Eduardo couldn't feel his hands or feet anymore. When
he tried to focus his vision on either of them, blurred darkness
was all he could see. Slowly, he was able to focus his eyesight
and when he looked around, the blackness was only interrupted
by glowing fireflies, floating throughout the air.
33
He was with men and women of the hacienda who were threatened
to be killed. He began to realize that his hands, feet and
backside were firmly restrained by what seemed like a rubbery
mist that prevented him from moving much more than his head.
His consciousness was instantly filled with the horrific vision
of what had been recently afflicted upon him - the savage
abduction and beating at the hands of that sickening creature.
Then, far within the distant darkness, he could hear them coming
once again. A group of men slithered their way towards them,
laughing at the sickly sight of them.
34
“You think you are so wise that the President would support
your families so we could lose our fortune,” a familiar voice
echoed in the middle of the fields, where tall grasses grew.
“You are the future of the hacienda and you must be killed by
let’s say rebels and guerrilla because you were too nosy and
ill-mannered. After all, you are all just peasants who come
to suck at our wealth.”
35
Armed men clad in black, face covered with black masks laughed
in unison as if they were possessed by evil entities that fateful
night. “Kill them,” the voice ordered in authority. “You sick
man, we trusted our lives to you! Don Melecio, as long as your
blood runs the hacienda, Hacienda Luisita will never be at peace.
The land will thrive on sweat and blood until we get justice!”
a familiar voice emerged among the crowd. Eduardo ran towards
her but he cannot speak nor move. He can only observe, yet not
react to anything.
36
“So be it,” Don Melecio answered in authority. The old man did
not listen, he was too confident and powerful to be intimidated
by hollow threats. All who were taken from their families were
killed mercilessly at the hands of oligarchs because of greed
that ran in their veins. The sick plan of eradicating the tenants
worked. There was a great cry of social justice that night from
families who lost their young because of greed.
Eduardo became aware of all of this. He knew nothing can change
what happened in the past, but he can do something at present.
37
The young man faced Maria Luisita in soiled white tattered
clothes. She was grieving and crying her eyes that are hollow
of happiness and void of the glow in her eyes he was familiar
of. “I will never be free because of you,” Maria Luisita with
ravaging anger. “Sweat and blood will be the curse of the land
until we get justice!” The words echoed all over the fields.
Eduardo cried in defeated fear and disbelief that the man he
trusted wasn’t the man he always knew. Eduardo was on his knees
and begged her forgiveness. Maria was driven in anger who was
ready to lunge anytime at her command. Eduardo cannot bear to
see her hurt. He tried to wrap his arms around her, but she
was cold and had no trace of mercy.
38
“I love you, Maria! Don’t do this. I love you. Please,” Eduardo
begged in tears. “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Maria saw another
traitor in him. She did not believe him as she thinks that all
Cojuangcos are the same heck of liars and thieves that the law
overlooked. She pushed him at the edge of the cliff, giving
him a view of the mass graveyard of all Cojuangcos she has ever
killed. “You have to do it, Eduardo! Kill all the Cojuangcos!
You know how your family can be too greedy and selfish who will
stop at nothing to get more wealth. You cannot be one of them!”
exclaimed Maria in her horrid voice. “Finish this for us…for
me!”
39
Eduardo was torn at making the decision. He knows not what to
do. Everything about his life was a lie. He was sick of lies
and pretenses. He knew he had to stop this injustice for the
souls of all who suffered. It was the one night that he felt
too devastated way more than what he felt at the death of his
grandfather. The death of his grandfather…he remembered. His
last words and his last instructions that he promised to fulfill
came into his mind. “I will do it, Maria. I will do what’s right
this time. I love you and there’s no other way to do it but
through this,” he explained fighting back tears that attempted
to fall from his eyes. He took a deep breath before moving into
action.
40
The whole town was startled about the lurking news. The mansion
was allegedly burned to ashes by Eduardo Cojuangco, who was
reported not to be in his right state of mind when he did the
crime. People said he had gone mad and that was his turning
point. He burned almost half of the fortune of the Cojuangcos
along with himself. Families were grief-stricken and finally
at peace when they traced the mass graveyard at the cliff where
their family was massacred. Among the remains is the cadaver
of the poor Maria Luisita Taruc, the woman who cursed the land
until due justice is served against the Cojuangco oppressors.
41
Everyone did not expect so much to happen overnight. What made
him do it, no one was certain. He met with Maria’s conditions
halfway. However, one thing was certain. He fulfilled both of
his promises - to do the right thing and only love Maria. He
was a man of concrete words and principles. Maria Luisita and
Eduardo were eternally bound to each until the curse is broken
to set them free.
42
Another Cojuangco died shortly after the death of another. The
curse still lingers in the land as long as the existence of
fatal injustice that would eventually devour evil souls and
fatal injustice. 60 years later, the legend of Maria Luisita
and her curse lingers. No one can silence the plea of justice
for the oppressed tenants who were promised shares of land so
the Cojuangcos may earn opportunities to buy hectares of land.
43
At present, they are the richest and the most powerful oligarchs
in the Philippines. They play a dirty game of justice. They
play the hearts of the Filipinos, making them believe that
Filipinos are worth dying for when they are ending Filipinos’
lives for their gain. The curse still prevails, keeping at bay
waiting for another oppressor who would feed its soul of hatred.
No one would ever know who’s next.

CHARACTERS
YSIDRA COJUANGCO, daughter of a Chinese merchant and a Filipina
native living in Malolos, Bulacan who worries of the state
of her family’s ricemill business. She is the girlfriend
of Antonio Luna and the secret mistress of Miong.
EMILIO “MIONG” AGUINALDO, the president of the First Republic
of the Philippines. He orchestrated the plan to deceive
Luna of bringing the Republic’s riches to his
girlfriend’s hometown which sparked anger among the
Filipino guerilla.
46
ANTONIO LUNA, a committed general who was tasked by Miong to
send the Republic’s riches to Pampanga which is also the
hometown of Ysidra.
CARTERO, an middle-aged mailman who delivers letters to
Ysidra’s home.
SCENE 1
THE COCHERO
[The Cojuangco’s mansion is simple and made out of strong narra
wood. The living room is filled with obra maestra art pieces
of renowned Filipino artists. A few works for the Cojuangco’s
rice mill business. The afternoon was heated by the weather
and so was Ysidra who just arrived from the busy fields. Enter
YSIDRA CONJUANGCO, walking fast into the living room looking
for something.]
YSIDRA: I bet he wrote a letter for me. It’s been 2 weeks since
he sent me one. [She walks anxiously, often looking out the
window.]
47
[A calesa arrived halted in front of their porch. The cochero
had a satchel filled with telegrams and letters for their
clients. CARTERO smiles at Ysidra.]
CARTERO: Buenos días, Señorita Ysidra! I have a letter for you
from Heneral Luna. He asked me to give this to you as soon as
possible, but I must show my apologies for I have met an
unfortunate accident on my way here. [He slightly bowed his
head to the young woman.]
YSIDRA: No problemo, Señor. I was just anxious about Antonio.
I’ve never heard of him since he was sent to battle. I’m so
glad he sent me a letter.
CARTERO: I understand your concern, Señorita. [He closes his
satchel as he rides on the calesa.] The war is an awful sight
and no one can ever be sure who or who will not come back in
once piece. [He pauses for a moment.] I must leave Señorita
Ysidra. I have more letters to send to waiting lovers like you.
[The mailman goes on his way as he smiled at the young lady.
The COCHERO exits.]

THE LETTER
48
[YSIDRA enters and sits on the couch as she reads the letter
from her lover which she picks up from a coffee table. Her eyes
was filled with worry as she goes on. She felt anxious and
unbecoming.]
ANTONIO(voice): My dear, Ysidra. The indications are very
strong that we shall move in a few days perhaps tomorrow. Lest
I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write
a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no
more. Though God may require us to momentarily be apart,
remember that the laughter and cries of our comrades are also
mine. Do not long for me, for I will always be with you. I did
not embrace you so many times just so that when our arms drift
apart, you will feel as if I am leaving you. I will forever
be faithful to our promise. Even though I may not hold tomorrow,
I will be back for you to rest in your arms. Think of me, my
love.
YSIDRA: [She breaths deeply almost letting out a heavy sigh
of disappointment and worry.] Oh, dear. When will you be back
for me? How will I live life without you? [She sips from a cup
of coffee. She stares blankly into the space as her mind is
full. She traces the rim of her ceramic cup.]

THE CONSORT
[A calesa different from one which arrived earlier stopped at
the proch. YSIDRA looks out the window and recognizes the man
who stepped out the calesa. MIONG enters the living room. Ysidra
runs towards him and greeted him with a hug and a peck on the
cheek.]
YSIDRA: Miong! You’re here. I thought you were away. Your letter,
it says…
MIONG: What’s important is that I’m here now, my love. I only
had to fix some things. I left early so I could spare some time
for you, my dear.
YSIDRA: Dear, I feel so blue. I thought I would be doing this
alone.
MIONG: What’s the matter, love? [He looks at her in the eyes.]
YSIDRA:[teary-eyed]The rice mill business in Malolos is
failing. The typhoon a month ago caused the crops to go useless.
Spaniards came after us to take father away. That’s why we had
to move to another town to ensure our safety. We can’t pay our
debts as easy as they think. Can you help me? Papa, they took
50
Papa away [She looks at him with a hinting face and starts
sobbing in his arms.]
MIONG: Of course, dear. [He cups her face and looks straight
into her eyes.] Of course, I will help you. But first, let’s
consider proper solutions for that. How about your cousin Pepe?
Doesn’t he have a mining business?
YSIDRA: You know well that he doesn’t help. He only thinks of
himself and would only reach out if he needs something. [She
turns her back to Miong.] Miong, you know what I mean. I want
you to use your connections. Your power. [She angrily faces
Miong.]For God’s sake, you can control the entire country!
You’re willing to start a fight for the motherland? How am I
any less important? Would you prefer to lose me than the
country’s freedom?
MIONG: Of course not, Dear! You know I will do anything for
you. I was just teasing you. I love you, dear! You know I will
move the heavens and earth for you. For us!
YSIDRA: Then, what did you do for me?
MIONG: Have faith, Ysidra. Everything will be according to plan.
But, I’m sorry I have to risk your dearly beloved Antonio for
this plan to work.
51
YSIDRA: Antonio? What did you make him do? Don’t hurt him! And,
I told you, he’s just a friend. We grew up together and there
is nothing else going on between us [nervous and hesitant].
MIONG: Oh, hush! I won’t hurt him, but maybe the guerilla will.
I just orchestrated the plan that would benefit us both. As
the war broke out, we had to move the Republic’s treasure and
reserve for safekeeping. I do think it is a good opportunity
to stage a scene for us to own some part of it...or maybe all
of it[smirks]. I privately tasked Heneral Antonio Luna to bring
the Treasure to Malolos, Bulacan since I convinced him that
I’m going personally move the government there. By the time
he is there, he will realize the area is titled in your name.
Don’t worry, I posted Enrico there to guard the reserves. The
soldiers will realize this and accuse him of corruption,
prompting them to kill him. And, voila! We will be richer than
anyone else in the country or in the entire Asia. When the
telegram about Heneral Luna’s death arrives, it confirms that
he has reached the location. The place where I prepared to be
our heaven made out of gold donned with silver pools of wealth
[pauses]. You’re right. The power I hold is greater than God’s.
I can move the heavens and earth whenever I want.
YSIDRA: True, you do know how to manipulate the country. I don’t
care about that Antonio anyway. I only longed for him because
he is the only I thought who would be willing to lend me money
for the business. [She clings to Miong’s arm.] I knew I had
nothing to worry about when you are here with me. I really
52
thought you cannot help me. I thought wrong! You are not who
they think you are.
MIONG: I don’t have to worry about that. You are talking to
the Republic. I am the EMILO AGUINALDO. I AM THE REPUBLIC. I
can do anything that I want. I can even sell the entire country
to the American government and coat it as freedom for the
Filipinos. You know I have my ways.
YSIDRA: Such mischievous man!
MIONG: And you are lovely!
YSIDRA: Oh...[sighs] I feel a little gloomy.
MIONG: What causes you trouble, dear?
YSIDRA: When will you announce our love? I thought you left
your wife for me? When will you tell the world that I am the
one you really love?
MIONG: We don’t need the world to know when we can create our
own. We can move to Tarlac so it would be hard for them to trace
us. There we build our empire that would go on many generations.
53
Our sons and daughters will bear the HACIENDA LUISITA for their
own. But, for now, let’s keep our relationship to ourselves
for safety.
YSIDRA: I love the way you think, Miong. The devil in the angel’s
body will always need a demon who knows all his weaknesses.
I never regretted I’ve always been with you and for you.[They
had each other in their arms. They sat down on the couch as
they planned arrangements for the Cojuangcos’ move out of town.]

SCENE 4
THE CONFIRMATION
[Ysidra and Miong were conversing about their plans to help
the Cojuangco family move out of town safely. The CARTERO enters
the scene and arrives on a calesa.]
CARTERO: I’m sorry, Señorita. I might have missed this earlier.
This telegram is also for you.
Ysidra: It’s okay, Señor. I understand you might only be busy.
54
CARTERO: Thank you. I’ll be on my way.
[CARTERO exits scene.]
MIONG: I told you. A letter will arrive to confirm that the
riches are safely transported to OUR home in Malolos. That Luna
is quite gullible for your liking, isn’t he?
YSIDRA: Miong, I only care about his money. Stop repeating what
you had just said. You’re the only one I love. Now, let’s get
going before somebody else steals the Republic’s treasure. [She
starts walking towards her room.] Oh, right. [She faces him
with a striking expression and smirks.] You are the Republic.
[Miong just smiled. They hurriedly walked into the room and
takes bags of clothes and things. MIONG and YSIDRA exits.]

  • 8. 2 The sun 06182018. The pulsing bright sun smiled to me, carelessly fondling my bare skin. Her warm touch caressed my face as she reminds me of another hopeful tomorrow. I lifted my eyes to see her and I saw how she was tamed by the clouds that embraced her majesty. Her radiance immediately raced into darkness as she took a glimpse into the windows of my soul. The rosy sun understood my bitterness and she left without asking why. Fin.
  • 9. 3 Love lost 06252018. How do I forget the eyes that haunt my dreams and the scent that fills my nose at each inhale? I can hear your heartbeat every time the waves kiss the shore and the harmony of the moving waters and sea breeze tingles my ear. As I watch free birds gliding in the wind that guides them, I remember the whisper of your soothing voice that gives life to every nerve in my body. I see the bright shadow of your smile and the sparkle in your brown, dreamy eyes that tells me I am protected. Oh, those eyes. I can feel the warmth of your breath that gently lands on face as you wrap your arms around me and embrace my
  • 10. 4 entirety. It was the last day of summer and the first of our journey. I reminisce the past that had been. I still do. Though we were penniless free spirits of the high mountains, you gifted me the unmatched happiness over simplicity rather than luxury. My shattered heart still hoping that dream did not come true. I think of your beaming smile, yearn for your heartbeat against my ear, longing the amorous emprise we shared once. The sweet happiness turned sour and bitter, overwhelmed by the abrupt twist in our peregrination. You left me wandering in the woods. I twirled and leaped and finally I saw you, drenched in the crimson pool of life essence that once ran along the subtle tunnels of your body. My angel, my guardian, my hero, my soldier, you were holding my portrait, pressing it against your bleeding heart. You were fallen, as

I never expected you to come and save me when I was engulfed in darkness. Then, never did I expect either that you would be gone the moment we start achieving our dreams. You left me with nothing but an empty body and an empty soul that eternally longed for you. Excruciating is the unasked dream that turned into ashes when once touched and cherished. Fin.

  • 19. 13 Death did us part 08032018. The chill of the gloomy November night cradled the thick cotton of suit that hung on Eduardo’s shoulders. He walked on the dreadfully long carpet that led to his confidante. Guests gossiped as he walked past them. He brushed off glaring eyes and continued to drag his feet until he reached his destination. The world stopped as his eyes hovered over the barren body of the man he saluted as a hero. The magnitude of despair in his eyes was enormous. The mighty king he knew became insipid. He dared look back at that agonizing night at the hospital where his grandfather took his last breath.
  • 20. 14
  • 21. 15 “Fix your life and do what is right,” Don Melecio whispered underneath his breath. “Always do the right thing, even if it’s hard,” the old man said to his beloved grandson, hinting that his time is running out. Eduardo hinted sorrow and regret in his eyes as if he has done grave evil in his life, which the young Cojuangco could not perceive. Eduardo simply nodded and pressed the cold, wrinkly hands that once held his with strength. He bit his lower lip, trying to suppress the tears that raced to the corners of his eyes. He smiled knowing that his grandfather no longer suffered from all the worries of the world. As much as he’s want his only family to stay, he knew he had to let go.
  • 22. 16 The young bachelor heeded Don Melecio’s last wish – to run the hacienda in Tarlac. Eduardo had no plans of settling, he was dynamic. He never wished to change his liberated lifestyle, but he promised. He was a man of his word and principles. Now, he must leave his nocturnal habit at the city, wasting money on booze to make a man out of a naïve urchin like him. The fields were vast with the ears of grain glowing like pools of gold under the sun. On the other direction was tall rows of sugarcane that was ready for harvest. The young boy smiled as he was learning new things every day. He saw everything as an opportunity to change himself to be a good haciendero like his grandfather, to fulfill a promise. The sun smiled and the wind blew. It was a life that was different from where he came from.
  • 23. 17 “Señorito Eduardo, the farmers wanted to have a conversation with you about certain matters left unsettled by Don Melecio,” the young vibrant Rosario said. The young haciendero nodded in recognition. He wondered what it might be about. As he entered the room, stares from pools of angry, disappointed eyes were upon him. “We cannot let this continue, Señorito!” exclaimed the angry peasants. “You must give us the share of our hacienda. It cannot go on like this. You know that. It is the law!”
  • 24. 18 “I am doing everything in my power to understand the agreement first before I make any move. I understand your needs that is why I let you stay in the hacienda for this long,” Eduardo said calmly, trying to keep his temper. “I am telling you, Señorito. This land will never be at peace until you do what you must. Your grandfather knew that and he did not heed. Death will come upon the land if you don’t listen to us,” Luis, a trusted adviser warned Eduardo. Eduardo kept a straight face. He did not show fear or intimidation, but deep inside he was trembling. He was afraid of what might happen. He was told that shadows and darkness will come upon Hacienda Luisita. He dreaded those haunting words.
  • 25. 19 The tall grasses of cogon stood at the outskirts of the fields. The young don roved his land as he reminisced moments of his youth. He remembered he was happy playing with his grandparents, helping then make tira-tira made from sugarcane extract. He recalled that the sweets were as delightful as he was when he was young. He would play with his friends along the river where an acacia tree stood proud, boasting its abundance and greatness. They would call it the Tagpuan as he would climb its strong branches. He could see everything from up above, but he loved and took delight in seeing the sun rise at dawn when it slowly turned the sky into golden orange and pink hues. The young man revisited his refuge, inhaling deep breaths of fresh air.
  • 26. 20 “Hey! What are you doing here? Who are you?” a voice echoed from the tree. The young lad trembled in fear, thinking it was one of the agta Rosario warned him about. He tries to hide behind a nearby tree. Little did he know, the entity was behind him. A hand crept on his shoulder and he almost screamed. Almost! He would have if he had not seen the most beautiful pair of brown eyes that gazed upon his own. He feasted his eyes on the white, flowing dress that barely touched the ground and her hair in the wind that she tried to tuck delicately behind her ears. He was stricken by love at first love most ardently. He would have kissed her. Almost! If it only weren’t for his promise.
  • 27. 21 He took a quick step back. He regained his composure and took a deep breath. “I wanted to know how vast the hacienda is,” he answered with pride. “You know that’s not the reason why you’re here. I saw you stare blankly ahead. You weren’t measuring the vastness of the hacienda either,” the girl snapped. “I am Luisita. I live and work here...and this, this is my tree. I stay here when I feel bored.”
  • 28. 22 “Luisita? Your name is not familiar, is it?” Eduardo said, smirking. “My name is Eduardo. I don’t like it when people blurt out things that I don’t care about.” “How arrogant! Anyway, Eduardo? You have the same name as the inheritor of the hacienda. I heard he’s from the city and he’s really rude.”
  • 29. 23 “That’s only because I am Eduardo Cojuangco. I’m not rude, I just value direct honesty. Anyway, this is my tree. As you said, I am the inheritor of the hacienda. So, you better run along or I would have your family leave the hacienda,” it hurts him to say this but he should not show his appreciation for the beauty in front of him. He should not give in to the petty wants of the peasants so he could keep his reputation, so he could keep their respects. To his amusement, Luisita burst out laughing, mocking him. “You know you can’t really do that. Our families had a deal. I’m sure you’ve heard of that if you really are the Eduardo Cojuangco.”
  • 30. 24 But, Eduardo had no idea about the deal that’s keeping him from commanding everyone in the hacienda. Secretly, he thanked the heavens for the agreement. At least, he could spend more time with the girl of his dreams. Although, deep in his heart he knew she shouldn’t love.
  • 31. 25 The sun shone on the golden fields. It was the golden hour. The wind blew from across the skies and two young hearts breathed a fresh air of relief and pure joy. The mountains had a perfect picturesque view of the entire Hacienda Luisita, the sweet pearl of Paniqui, Tarlac regarded as the pride of the nation and of the Cojuangcos. “Eddie, move fast! I’m tired of you letting me win over and over again. Come on, man up!” the little Maria shouted at Eduardo who was struggling at the base of the hill.
  • 32. 26 “How could you be that fast, Maria? Are you secretly a man? I can’t believe you! Where do you get all that energy? Look at you, you look sickly. Hmmm... It’s the wind! It’s the wind that brought you up there too quickly because you are so little,” complained the defeated Eduardo. “Come on, Eddie. Stop whining like a baby. It’s just the way of a true child of the land. Come, I have something to show you,” Maria pulled him up and shook him giddily. “I’ve always wanted to show you this, Eddie. I found it when I ran away to weep when I heard you were leaving. It is my treasure and I’m sharing it with my best friend before he leaves me for Manila.”
  • 33. 27 When Eduardo reached the top of the hill, he witnessed the beautiful horizon that stretched across the sky and projected colors he never knew. He was enamored of what he saw. He wished that time would stand still. “Eddie, this is the vastness of my adoration for you. You don’t have to say it back but I do. I never realized that I found my treasure since I met you,” Maria fell silent when these words came out of her mouth. She raised her head to meet the eyes that captivated her heart.
  • 34. 28 “I just wanted you to know this before you leave. You’re my best friend and you’ll always have a special place in my heart,” Maria smiled weakly, trying to hide the pain in her heart. Eduardo moved closer, not saying a word. Both fell silent and Eduardo wrapped his arms around her as he kissed her forehead. From then on, Eduardo promised himself that he would come back for Maria. He never told Maria, but he had to follow the plea of his innocent heart. Little did he know, it would be their last encounter. Eduardo left for Manila without telling her. He was afraid he might not contain himself.
  • 35. 29 In his years of study, he motivated himself to work hard to make Maria proud. One night, he received a letter from the province. He was reluctant to open the letter and he regretted opening it. There he was sent a telegram and a news clipping. His dear Maria became one of the victims of the alleged massacre of the children of peasants. Along with his promise, he vowed to never love again. His dreams came to set like a sun vowing to never shine again.
  • 36. 30 The night fell and Eduardo looked out of his window, reminiscing the innocence and twinge of his memory. That night his eagerness to revisit the past kept him awake. He stood and marched towards his childhood chamber, which became the inventory room for things which had fulfilled its purpose. He waltzed into the wooden door, turning its knob to unveil the cognizant aroma of the aged. There he saw old pictures of him with his late mother holding his hand when he can’t even remember. Nevertheless, he felt the warmth of her smile in that old portrait. He scanned more into the albums until a specific detail caught his attention. It was the smile of the little girl he knew all too well. Beside her was the young Eduardo. He felt a pang in his heart.
  • 37. 31 He glanced at the photographed one last time. He saw something new to his memory. The young Maria had a scar on her hand. A scar on her hand...that seemingly resembled those of Luisita. His adrenaline shot up and immediately ran towards Maria’s old cabin. He banged the door and he could not contain his excitement and fear of seeing Maria who he thought was now hailed as Luisita. Mang Luis and his wife wondered with tears in their eyes saying that Maria had long been gone. Eduardo did not believe as he clearly remembered Luisita who embodied the matured beauty of his dear Maria. He knew it was her when he first dived into the brown pools of her eyes. Without hesitation, he ran to their special Tagpuan, the acacia tree they cherished in their youth.
  • 38. 32 “Maria, Maria! Come out. Show yourself! I need to talk to you,” Eduardo begged sobbing on his knees. An orb of white light glowed so brightly and brought Eduardo to a dimension different from ours. Eduardo couldn't feel his hands or feet anymore. When he tried to focus his vision on either of them, blurred darkness was all he could see. Slowly, he was able to focus his eyesight and when he looked around, the blackness was only interrupted by glowing fireflies, floating throughout the air.
  • 39. 33 He was with men and women of the hacienda who were threatened to be killed. He began to realize that his hands, feet and backside were firmly restrained by what seemed like a rubbery mist that prevented him from moving much more than his head. His consciousness was instantly filled with the horrific vision of what had been recently afflicted upon him - the savage abduction and beating at the hands of that sickening creature. Then, far within the distant darkness, he could hear them coming once again. A group of men slithered their way towards them, laughing at the sickly sight of them.
  • 40. 34 “You think you are so wise that the President would support your families so we could lose our fortune,” a familiar voice echoed in the middle of the fields, where tall grasses grew. “You are the future of the hacienda and you must be killed by let’s say rebels and guerrilla because you were too nosy and ill-mannered. After all, you are all just peasants who come to suck at our wealth.”
  • 41. 35 Armed men clad in black, face covered with black masks laughed in unison as if they were possessed by evil entities that fateful night. “Kill them,” the voice ordered in authority. “You sick man, we trusted our lives to you! Don Melecio, as long as your blood runs the hacienda, Hacienda Luisita will never be at peace. The land will thrive on sweat and blood until we get justice!” a familiar voice emerged among the crowd. Eduardo ran towards her but he cannot speak nor move. He can only observe, yet not react to anything.
  • 42. 36 “So be it,” Don Melecio answered in authority. The old man did not listen, he was too confident and powerful to be intimidated by hollow threats. All who were taken from their families were killed mercilessly at the hands of oligarchs because of greed that ran in their veins. The sick plan of eradicating the tenants worked. There was a great cry of social justice that night from families who lost their young because of greed. Eduardo became aware of all of this. He knew nothing can change what happened in the past, but he can do something at present.
  • 43. 37 The young man faced Maria Luisita in soiled white tattered clothes. She was grieving and crying her eyes that are hollow of happiness and void of the glow in her eyes he was familiar of. “I will never be free because of you,” Maria Luisita with ravaging anger. “Sweat and blood will be the curse of the land until we get justice!” The words echoed all over the fields. Eduardo cried in defeated fear and disbelief that the man he trusted wasn’t the man he always knew. Eduardo was on his knees and begged her forgiveness. Maria was driven in anger who was ready to lunge anytime at her command. Eduardo cannot bear to see her hurt. He tried to wrap his arms around her, but she was cold and had no trace of mercy.
  • 44. 38 “I love you, Maria! Don’t do this. I love you. Please,” Eduardo begged in tears. “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Maria saw another traitor in him. She did not believe him as she thinks that all Cojuangcos are the same heck of liars and thieves that the law overlooked. She pushed him at the edge of the cliff, giving him a view of the mass graveyard of all Cojuangcos she has ever killed. “You have to do it, Eduardo! Kill all the Cojuangcos! You know how your family can be too greedy and selfish who will stop at nothing to get more wealth. You cannot be one of them!” exclaimed Maria in her horrid voice. “Finish this for us…for me!”
  • 45. 39 Eduardo was torn at making the decision. He knows not what to do. Everything about his life was a lie. He was sick of lies and pretenses. He knew he had to stop this injustice for the souls of all who suffered. It was the one night that he felt too devastated way more than what he felt at the death of his grandfather. The death of his grandfather…he remembered. His last words and his last instructions that he promised to fulfill came into his mind. “I will do it, Maria. I will do what’s right this time. I love you and there’s no other way to do it but through this,” he explained fighting back tears that attempted to fall from his eyes. He took a deep breath before moving into action.
  • 46. 40 The whole town was startled about the lurking news. The mansion was allegedly burned to ashes by Eduardo Cojuangco, who was reported not to be in his right state of mind when he did the crime. People said he had gone mad and that was his turning point. He burned almost half of the fortune of the Cojuangcos along with himself. Families were grief-stricken and finally at peace when they traced the mass graveyard at the cliff where their family was massacred. Among the remains is the cadaver of the poor Maria Luisita Taruc, the woman who cursed the land until due justice is served against the Cojuangco oppressors.
  • 47. 41 Everyone did not expect so much to happen overnight. What made him do it, no one was certain. He met with Maria’s conditions halfway. However, one thing was certain. He fulfilled both of his promises - to do the right thing and only love Maria. He was a man of concrete words and principles. Maria Luisita and Eduardo were eternally bound to each until the curse is broken to set them free.
  • 48. 42 Another Cojuangco died shortly after the death of another. The curse still lingers in the land as long as the existence of fatal injustice that would eventually devour evil souls and fatal injustice. 60 years later, the legend of Maria Luisita and her curse lingers. No one can silence the plea of justice for the oppressed tenants who were promised shares of land so the Cojuangcos may earn opportunities to buy hectares of land.
  • 49. 43 At present, they are the richest and the most powerful oligarchs in the Philippines. They play a dirty game of justice. They play the hearts of the Filipinos, making them believe that Filipinos are worth dying for when they are ending Filipinos’ lives for their gain. The curse still prevails, keeping at bay waiting for another oppressor who would feed its soul of hatred. No one would ever know who’s next. Fin.

CHARACTERS YSIDRA COJUANGCO, daughter of a Chinese merchant and a Filipina native living in Malolos, Bulacan who worries of the state of her family’s ricemill business. She is the girlfriend of Antonio Luna and the secret mistress of Miong. EMILIO “MIONG” AGUINALDO, the president of the First Republic of the Philippines. He orchestrated the plan to deceive Luna of bringing the Republic’s riches to his girlfriend’s hometown which sparked anger among the Filipino guerilla.
  • 52. 46 ANTONIO LUNA, a committed general who was tasked by Miong to send the Republic’s riches to Pampanga which is also the hometown of Ysidra. CARTERO, an middle-aged mailman who delivers letters to Ysidra’s home. SCENE 1 THE COCHERO [The Cojuangco’s mansion is simple and made out of strong narra wood. The living room is filled with obra maestra art pieces of renowned Filipino artists. A few works for the Cojuangco’s rice mill business. The afternoon was heated by the weather and so was Ysidra who just arrived from the busy fields. Enter YSIDRA CONJUANGCO, walking fast into the living room looking for something.] YSIDRA: I bet he wrote a letter for me. It’s been 2 weeks since he sent me one. [She walks anxiously, often looking out the window.]
  • 53. 47 [A calesa arrived halted in front of their porch. The cochero had a satchel filled with telegrams and letters for their clients. CARTERO smiles at Ysidra.] CARTERO: Buenos días, Señorita Ysidra! I have a letter for you from Heneral Luna. He asked me to give this to you as soon as possible, but I must show my apologies for I have met an unfortunate accident on my way here. [He slightly bowed his head to the young woman.] YSIDRA: No problemo, Señor. I was just anxious about Antonio. I’ve never heard of him since he was sent to battle. I’m so glad he sent me a letter. CARTERO: I understand your concern, Señorita. [He closes his satchel as he rides on the calesa.] The war is an awful sight and no one can ever be sure who or who will not come back in once piece. [He pauses for a moment.] I must leave Señorita Ysidra. I have more letters to send to waiting lovers like you. [The mailman goes on his way as he smiled at the young lady. The COCHERO exits.] END SCENE SCENE 2 THE LETTER
  • 54. 48 [YSIDRA enters and sits on the couch as she reads the letter from her lover which she picks up from a coffee table. Her eyes was filled with worry as she goes on. She felt anxious and unbecoming.] ANTONIO(voice): My dear, Ysidra. The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days perhaps tomorrow. Lest I should not be able to write again, I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more. Though God may require us to momentarily be apart, remember that the laughter and cries of our comrades are also mine. Do not long for me, for I will always be with you. I did not embrace you so many times just so that when our arms drift apart, you will feel as if I am leaving you. I will forever be faithful to our promise. Even though I may not hold tomorrow, I will be back for you to rest in your arms. Think of me, my love. YSIDRA: [She breaths deeply almost letting out a heavy sigh of disappointment and worry.] Oh, dear. When will you be back for me? How will I live life without you? [She sips from a cup of coffee. She stares blankly into the space as her mind is full. She traces the rim of her ceramic cup.] END SCENE SCENE 3
  • 55. 49 THE CONSORT [A calesa different from one which arrived earlier stopped at the proch. YSIDRA looks out the window and recognizes the man who stepped out the calesa. MIONG enters the living room. Ysidra runs towards him and greeted him with a hug and a peck on the cheek.] YSIDRA: Miong! You’re here. I thought you were away. Your letter, it says… MIONG: What’s important is that I’m here now, my love. I only had to fix some things. I left early so I could spare some time for you, my dear. YSIDRA: Dear, I feel so blue. I thought I would be doing this alone. MIONG: What’s the matter, love? [He looks at her in the eyes.] YSIDRA:[teary-eyed]The rice mill business in Malolos is failing. The typhoon a month ago caused the crops to go useless. Spaniards came after us to take father away. That’s why we had to move to another town to ensure our safety. We can’t pay our debts as easy as they think. Can you help me? Papa, they took
  • 56. 50 Papa away [She looks at him with a hinting face and starts sobbing in his arms.] MIONG: Of course, dear. [He cups her face and looks straight into her eyes.] Of course, I will help you. But first, let’s consider proper solutions for that. How about your cousin Pepe? Doesn’t he have a mining business? YSIDRA: You know well that he doesn’t help. He only thinks of himself and would only reach out if he needs something. [She turns her back to Miong.] Miong, you know what I mean. I want you to use your connections. Your power. [She angrily faces Miong.]For God’s sake, you can control the entire country! You’re willing to start a fight for the motherland? How am I any less important? Would you prefer to lose me than the country’s freedom? MIONG: Of course not, Dear! You know I will do anything for you. I was just teasing you. I love you, dear! You know I will move the heavens and earth for you. For us! YSIDRA: Then, what did you do for me? MIONG: Have faith, Ysidra. Everything will be according to plan. But, I’m sorry I have to risk your dearly beloved Antonio for this plan to work.
  • 57. 51 YSIDRA: Antonio? What did you make him do? Don’t hurt him! And, I told you, he’s just a friend. We grew up together and there is nothing else going on between us [nervous and hesitant]. MIONG: Oh, hush! I won’t hurt him, but maybe the guerilla will. I just orchestrated the plan that would benefit us both. As the war broke out, we had to move the Republic’s treasure and reserve for safekeeping. I do think it is a good opportunity to stage a scene for us to own some part of it...or maybe all of it[smirks]. I privately tasked Heneral Antonio Luna to bring the Treasure to Malolos, Bulacan since I convinced him that I’m going personally move the government there. By the time he is there, he will realize the area is titled in your name. Don’t worry, I posted Enrico there to guard the reserves. The soldiers will realize this and accuse him of corruption, prompting them to kill him. And, voila! We will be richer than anyone else in the country or in the entire Asia. When the telegram about Heneral Luna’s death arrives, it confirms that he has reached the location. The place where I prepared to be our heaven made out of gold donned with silver pools of wealth [pauses]. You’re right. The power I hold is greater than God’s. I can move the heavens and earth whenever I want. YSIDRA: True, you do know how to manipulate the country. I don’t care about that Antonio anyway. I only longed for him because he is the only I thought who would be willing to lend me money for the business. [She clings to Miong’s arm.] I knew I had nothing to worry about when you are here with me. I really
  • 58. 52 thought you cannot help me. I thought wrong! You are not who they think you are. MIONG: I don’t have to worry about that. You are talking to the Republic. I am the EMILO AGUINALDO. I AM THE REPUBLIC. I can do anything that I want. I can even sell the entire country to the American government and coat it as freedom for the Filipinos. You know I have my ways. YSIDRA: Such mischievous man! MIONG: And you are lovely! YSIDRA: Oh...[sighs] I feel a little gloomy. MIONG: What causes you trouble, dear? YSIDRA: When will you announce our love? I thought you left your wife for me? When will you tell the world that I am the one you really love? MIONG: We don’t need the world to know when we can create our own. We can move to Tarlac so it would be hard for them to trace us. There we build our empire that would go on many generations.
  • 59. 53 Our sons and daughters will bear the HACIENDA LUISITA for their own. But, for now, let’s keep our relationship to ourselves for safety. YSIDRA: I love the way you think, Miong. The devil in the angel’s body will always need a demon who knows all his weaknesses. I never regretted I’ve always been with you and for you.[They had each other in their arms. They sat down on the couch as they planned arrangements for the Cojuangcos’ move out of town.] END SCENE SCENE 4 THE CONFIRMATION [Ysidra and Miong were conversing about their plans to help the Cojuangco family move out of town safely. The CARTERO enters the scene and arrives on a calesa.] CARTERO: I’m sorry, Señorita. I might have missed this earlier. This telegram is also for you. Ysidra: It’s okay, Señor. I understand you might only be busy.
  • 60. 54 CARTERO: Thank you. I’ll be on my way. [CARTERO exits scene.] MIONG: I told you. A letter will arrive to confirm that the riches are safely transported to OUR home in Malolos. That Luna is quite gullible for your liking, isn’t he? YSIDRA: Miong, I only care about his money. Stop repeating what you had just said. You’re the only one I love. Now, let’s get going before somebody else steals the Republic’s treasure. [She starts walking towards her room.] Oh, right. [She faces him with a striking expression and smirks.] You are the Republic. [Miong just smiled. They hurriedly walked into the room and takes bags of clothes and things. MIONG and YSIDRA exits.] END SCENE [CURTAINS] Fin.
