Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach Copyright 2014
Conductor
I’ll give you a speech sound, you give me as many of
the sound pics as you can- and include an example
word.
2 minutes – and then look at the cloud. Add the ones
you missed.
Put two into a sentence. Give it to your partner to
check spelling grammar and punctuation.
Quick fire - word, speech sound- student gives colour.
‘speak’ ‘ea’ - Blue

In Pairs
Get out your Duck Level sheet. Tell your partner where
you are up to (which level and word)
When the conductor says ‘go’ one says the words, and
the other writes them. When the Conductor says ‘stop’
work out your score. If you got them all right you can
start from the last word, the next day.
Swap.
Conductor- give 2-3 minutes only.
All
Start at your word. If you go them all right in the
previous exercise start from the last word. If not, start
where you made the first mistake.
Follow the sounds, say the word.

I will give you a word – give me the lines, numbers, sound pics and
then find them in your cloud keyring.
I am going to say a sentence. Ill then tell you the number (word)
and number sound pic in the (word)
Write the sound pic.
eg I rolled in the mud and my shirt got really dirty.
Number 8 word, second sound pic.
Students write ‘ir’
I am going to give you a speech sound. Listen for it, and write the word.
Eg ‘sh’
Harry had to wash the red machine because it was dirty,
(wash /machine)

Keep up!
Conductor reads blue level sentences.
Write it. Clever Clouds have to extend it before the next sentence.
How many complete sentences did you get?
Swap with partner and tell them how many sentences don’t need
changing. Did you get a better score than yesterday?
Here’s a word- put it in a sentence.
Clever Clouds – you might ask them to put it into a sentence including
‘speech marks’ or in the past tense, or to include another word in the
sentence etc.
Swap with your partner, edit.
Start with this word, how many changes can you make before the
Conductor says stop. Only change one sound pic at a time.

  • 3. Conductor I’ll give you a speech sound, you give me as many of the sound pics as you can- and include an example word. 2 minutes – and then look at the cloud. Add the ones you missed. Put two into a sentence. Give it to your partner to check spelling grammar and punctuation.   • 4. In Pairs Get out your Duck Level sheet. Tell your partner where you are up to (which level and word) When the conductor says ‘go’ one says the words, and the other writes them. When the Conductor says ‘stop’ work out your score. If you got them all right you can start from the last word, the next day. Swap. Conductor- give 2-3 minutes only. All Start at your word. If you go them all right in the previous exercise start from the last word. If not, start where you made the first mistake. Follow the sounds, say the word.   • 5. Conductor I will give you a word – give me the lines, numbers, sound pics and then find them in your cloud keyring. I am going to say a sentence. Ill then tell you the number (word) and number sound pic in the (word) Write the sound pic. eg I rolled in the mud and my shirt got really dirty. Number 8 word, second sound pic. Students write ‘ir’ I am going to give you a speech sound. Listen for it, and write the word.   • 6. Keep up! Conductor reads blue level sentences. Write it. Clever Clouds have to extend it before the next sentence. How many complete sentences did you get? Swap with partner and tell them how many sentences don’t need changing. Did you get a better score than yesterday? Here’s a word- put it in a sentence. Clever Clouds – you might ask them to put it into a sentence including ‘speech marks’ or in the past tense, or to include another word in the sentence etc. Swap with your partner, edit.
