Internet Tools in Education
❖ A means of connectinga computer to any other computer
anywherein the world via dedicatedrouters and servers.
❖ When two computers are connected over the Internet, they can
send and receive all kinds of informationsuch as text, graphics,
voice, video, and computer programs.
In a nutshell Internet means Networkof Networks.
What is Internet?
 The first workable prototype of the Internet came in the late 1960s with the
creation of ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network.
 Originally funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, ARPANET used packet
switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network.
 The number of computer connected to the internet has grown exponentially, while
the number of users has risen from a handful of computer scientist to 1.5 Billion
consumers.
 The network's reach has expanded beyond the United States to every corner of the
globe.
History of Internet
 The Internet contains a wealth of knowledge that
is available instantly upon any search. Because of
this, the Internet has superseded libraries as a
source for information gathering and research.
Many teachers will now ask students to visit
specific websites to study from home, and online
encyclopedias provide masses of knowledge on
almost every topic imaginable. The variety of
sources allows students to pursue subjects in
much greater detail rather than being limited to
whatever the teacher sends home.
Internet in Education
❖ Browsers
❖ Websites
❖ Search Engines
❖ Mail Servers
❖ E-mail
Tools of Internet
 A browser is software that is used
to access the internet. A browser
lets you visit websites and do
activities within them like login,
view multimedia, link from one
site to another, visit one page from
another, print, send and receive
email, among many other
activities.
 The most common browser
software titles on the market are:
Microsoft Internet Explorer,
Google's Chrome, Mozilla Firefox,
Apple's Safari, and Opera.
Browsers
 A set of related web pages located under a singledomain name.
 Websites come in a nearly endless variety, including educational sites, news
sites, forums, social mediasites, e-commerce sites, and so on. The pages
within a website are usually a mix of text and other media.
 This is main tool for students and teachers to find valuable educational
resources online anytime, anywhere with just a few clicks.
Websites
 Search engine is a service that allows
Internet users to search for content
via the World Wide Web (WWW).
 A user enters keywords or key
phrases into a search engine and
receives a list of Web content results
in the form of websites, images,
videos or other online data.
 The list of content returned via a
search engine to a user is known as a
search engine results page (SERP).
Search Engines
 A mail server (sometimes also referred to an e-mail server) is a
server that handles and delivers e-mail over a network, usually
over the Internet.
 A mail server can receive e-mails from client computers and
deliver them to other mail servers.
 A mail server can also deliver e-mails to client computers.
 A client computer is normally the computer where you read your
e-mails, for example your computer at home or in your office.
Also an advanced mobile phone or Smartphone, with e-mail
capabilities, can be regarded as a client computer in these
circumstances.
Mail Servers
 Electronic mail (email) is a digital mechanism for exchanging messages through
Internet or intranet communication platforms.
 Email messages are relayed through email servers, which are provided by all
Internet service providers (ISP).
 Emails are transmitted between two dedicated server folders: sender and
recipient. A sender saves, sends or forwards email messages, whereas a recipient
reads or downloads emails by accessing an email server.
 Email messages are comprised of three components, as follows:
1. Message envelope: Describes the email’s electronic format
2. Message header: Includes sender/recipient information and email subject line
3. Message body: Includes text, image and file attachments
E-mail
 There is so much that students can do with the Internet. Not only can they
communicate with international students, they can gain from others' knowledge
and experiences, participate in chatrooms, share ideas and solutions and learn
about the many diverse cultures out there.
 The Internet has become the single largest source of information in the world.
 That makes it a very important tool for educators to use it in the classrooms.
 It can be used as to get currents events updates, write blogs, send and receive
email, shopping, stream videos, process data, online schooling, to gather
information & resources, and variety of other purposes.
