all businesses can afford them. If you’re budget
strapped, try turning to these high-scoring open
source solutions.

3. Router Software
Vyatta is leading the way with tools comparable to
popular Cisco systems. Enterprise customers with
router software from Vyatta benefit from free
resources, including
commercial support,
appliances and subscription-
based products. The software
requires a Linux operating
system.

4. Also requiring a Linux operating system,
FREESCO scores highly too when it comes to
replacing standard Cisco routers. FREESCO
allows users to set up an Ethernet bridge/router;
a dial-up/leased-line router; or an http, dns, ftp,
ssh or print server.

5. Security
Now that your network is set up,
you want to make sure it’s
not vulnerable to penetration.
BackTrack, Metasploit and
Nmap are all good choices
for vulnerability testing.
Advanced users or larger
corporations should opt for
BackTrack, which has been
rated as the “most widely
adopted penetration testing
framework in existence.” DIY
types will fare better with Metasploit,
while Nmap will work across
Windows, Linux and
OS X.
