     OGC and ISO:
complementar y standar ds
IT standards matter

Without standards, there would be no Internet or Web:
• TCP/IP - (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
basic communication language of the Internet.

OGC standards are consistent with
and built on mainstream IT standards.

OGC formal relationships with ISO

• ISO TC 211 – Geomatics

• ISO TC 204 – Intelligent Transportation Systems

• ISO/IEC JTC1 Working Group 7 – Sensor Networks

• ISO/IEC JTC1 SC 29/WG 11 – MPEG-A (Part 13)

OGC and ISO/TC 211
• OGC is a voluntary consensus standards organisation,
ISO is a de jure (by law) standards organisation

• OGC develops ‘standards’, ISO develops ‘Standards’

• OGC membership is comprised of commercial,
government, research, NGO and university organisations,
ISO representation is at national, country level

• The OGC is a Class A Liaison member of ISO/TC 211,
this means the OGC can submit standards for processing
  and approval as ISO Standards

ISO TC 211 Standards /
        OGC Abstract Specifications
• ISO 19107: Spatial Schema is OGC AS Topic Volume 1

• ISO 19115: Metadata is OGC AS Topic Volume 2

• ISO 19119: Services is AS Topic Volume 12

Joint Advisory Group (JAG)

• The Joint Advisory Group (JAG) comprises
  ISO/TC 211 and OGC members

• Meets alternately at ISO/TC 211
  and OGC TC/PC meetings

• Goal of the JAG is to ensure proper and consistent
communication and coordination between the OGC
  and ISO/TC 211

OGC and ISO/TC 211 overview
Standards for exchanging geospatial and temporal
data in development since early 1994 through OGC
 and ISO/TC 211; Web services since 2000.
• ISO TC211 standards form the foundation
  – 19103 Conceptual schema
  – 19107 Spatial schema
  – 19108 Temporal schema
  – 19111 Coordinate reference
  – 19115 Metadata
  – 19123 Coverage schema
• OGC standards that implement or reference ISO standards
  – Web Mapping Service (WMS): simple graphic images
  – Web Feature Service (WFS): vector data
  – Web Coverage Service (WCS): gridded data
  – Catalog Service: portal index
  – Geography Markup Language (GML): XML schema and data

                        © 2012 Open Geospatial Consortium
OGC and ISO/TC 211 example
• Air Quality Community of Practice, in conjunction with
  GEOSS Architecture Implementation Pilot-2 (AIP-2)
• A community catalog for air quality data to be
  harvested/searched by the GEOSS Clearinghouse
• Using ISO 19115/119 as a metadata framework
• Using OGC WMS/WCS as initial source of metadata
  for catalog records
• Combination of ISO 19119, service description,
  and 19115, data description
• An example of how OGC and ISO standards are related
• OGC WFS is also now an ISO standard 19142: 2010
