1. DISTRICT PROFILE – WEST GODAVARI – RICE
BOWL OF ANDHRA PRADESH
West Godavari District is situated on the west banks of river Godavari and is
known as rice granary of Andhra Pradesh. It is bounded by Khammam District on
the north, Krishna District on south west and Bay of Bengal on the south. The
District has 3 different geographical zones the delta, the upland and Agency
track. The total area of the District is 7742 Sq. Km. and it is having the
population of 37.96 lakhs (As per 2011 Census). Agriculture is the backbone of
the district’s economy and about 78% of the working population depends on
Agriculture.
The major crops grown are Paddy, Sugarcane, Maize, Tobacco, Red Gram,
Green Gram, Black Gram, Groundnut, Sunflower and Pulses etc.
The commercial crops like Sugarcane, Chilies, Cotton and Groundnut also
grown in the District.
Horticulture crops such as Cashew nut, Mango and coconut are also grown.
The fish and prawn cultures are developed in the coastal areas of the District
and they are exported to the states like West Bengal and north eastern states as
well as other countries.
Main Minerals present in this district are Quartz, Fire Clay, Bal clay, Road
Metal (Boulders) and Gravel.
POTENTIAL ACTIVITIES IDENTIFIED IN WEST GODAVARI DISTRICT
Local Demand Based Industries:
1) Food based Industries: Ready to eat items like Potato Chips, Kurkurey,
Karapusa, Chikkies etc, Bakery products like Biscuits, cakes, Bread, Noodles
making, Pickles, Papads, Chilly Powders, Masala Powders, Cashew Nut
processing, Vulavacharu, Mushrooms making etc.
2) Plastic Based Industries: Plastic Chairs, buckets, mugs, dust bins, stools,
Pet Bottles, Pet Bottle Jars, water Bubble tops, Plastic Ropes, Plastic Glasses
and cups, Plastic packing containers, Tupperware products, Tooth brushes,
PVC Pipes, HDPE Pipes, PP covers, Multi layer Polythene film pouches,
disposable Plastic syringes, etc.
3) Construction based Industries: Autoclaved Aerated bricks, Cellular light
weight Bricks, Fly ash Bricks, Precast Concrete compound wall bricks,
payment bricks, UPVC Doors, UPVC Windows, PVC coated cup boards, UPVC
Pipes, paints, Curtains rods, stitching of curtains, Powder coated steel
furniture , sanitary steel taps etc.

2. 4) Packing Based Industries: Corrugated Boxes, HIPS curd cups, Pet Bottles
and Jars, Card board boxes, rotogravure printed Laminated Polythene
Pouches, PP Covers, Non-woven fabric cloth bags, plastic laminated Jute
Bags, Students school bags, Office bags, Craft paper Cones, Envelop Covers,
Paper Bags, Multi-layer Polythene film pouches (packing for Oil), Thermo coal
Boxes, Laptop cover bags, Cell phone covers.
5) Local demand based Industries: Detergent Powders, soaps, Dish cleaning
Bars, Dish cleaning liquids, Toilet cleaners, Sanitary Napkins, Children and
Women wear readymade garments, Leather chapels, UPVC soul based
chapels, Leather ladies Bags etc.

Major Thrust Sectors in the District are:
1. Food and Agro Based Sector.
2. Aqua Based Sector.
3. Mineral Based Sector.
4. Textile Based Sector
1.Food and Agro Based Sector:
The total area under horticulture crops in district is 1.204 lakh hectares. The
district is one of the major producers of mango and Oil palm. The major horticulture
crops are Mango, Lime, Banana, oil palm, Coconut, Cashew, Cocoa, vegetables,
spices and flowers. There is scope for cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants.
Agriculture is the backbone of district economy and about 78% of people
depends on agriculture. The major crops grown are paddy, sugar cane, maize,
tobacco, red gram green gram, black gram, groundnut, sun flower and pulses. The
Majority of the people here are depend on Agriculture only. The gross cropped area
is 724584 hectares .The major Horticulture crops are mango, oil palm, coconut,
cashew, cocoa, etc.
There is a scope for establishment of Palm oil Processing units, Rice
Bran oil processing units, Cashew Processing units, Cocoa processing units,
Lime processing units, Fruits and Vegetable processing units in this sector
throughout the district.

3. 2. Aqua Based Sector
The district is well developed in fisheries. It accounts 1/3 of inland fish
production at 3.0 lakhs tonnes out of 9.16 lakhs tonnes for the entire state. It has
3,00,000 Acres of Fish Culture yields to 36,00,000 Tons of Fish Production. It has
2,00,000 Acres of Shrimp Culture yields to 12,00,000 tonnes prawn production.
Now at present the major cultivated shrimp variety is Vanamee.
At present 18 shrimp processing units are existing in and around
Bhimavaram with installed capacity of 540 Tonnes per day. Each plant turnover is
around 250 crores per annum. All units are export oriented. Each unit provides an
employment of 500 persons.
There is a scope for establishment of Prawn Processing units, Fish
Processing units, Fish Feed Manufacturing units, Ice plant and cold storages,
EPS Products, Chiten and related chemical units from prawn heads processing
and testing labs related to fishy culture. These units are having scope to be
established in and around the Mandals of Narasapuram Revenue Division.
3. Mineral Based Sector
The District is rich in Minerals value. The important minerals available in the
district are Ball clay (271246 Metric Tons), Fireclay (8180 Metric Tons), Quartz
(10909 Metric Tons), Lime stone/ Feldspar, and chromite.
There is a scope for establishment of Manufacture of Ceramic Tiles,
Vitrified Tiles & Refractory Bricks in and around the Mandals of D.Tirumala,
Kamavarapukota, Bhimadole, Devarapalli & Kovvur.
5. Textile Based Sector
20 spinning mills were established in and around Tanuku due to climatic
conditions even though raw material cotton not available in plenty in the district.
These spinning mills established with an investment of Rs 2250 crores, installed
capacity of 450 Tons per day and providing employment for 4000 persons. The
turnover of these units is Rs 10.35 crores per day.
There is a scope for value addition manufacturing units such as Cloth
Weaving units, Fabric and yarn processing units.
Resources based Industries:
Local Raw material available based units:
1) Milk and Milk based Industries: Milk Chilling, Milk Processing, Milk powder,
Ghee Manufacturing, Butter milk, Basundhi, Milk based sweets, Ice cream
making, chocolates etc, cattle feed units.

4. 2) Fruit based industries: Mango, Guava pulp based Industries. i.e Mango
pulp, guava pulp, mango jelly, Pickels , fruit jams etc.
3) Coir Based Industries: Coir fiber, coir Yarn, Curled Coir, rubberized coir
blocks, Coir matrices etc.
4) Agricultural commodities based Industries: Rice Mills, Solvent oils
extraction units, Palm kernel oil, Jaggary manufacturing, Cotton Ginning .
5) Aqua Culture based Industries: Ice Blocks, Prawn Processing, Fish
processing units. Fish and prawn Feed units.
6) Mineral based units ( Fly Ash etc) : Fly ash bricks, Cellular light weight
Bricks, Auto clave aerated concrete bricks, Precast compound wall bricks,
flooring tiles, Refractory Bricks, Ceramic Tiles, Bathrooms tiles, sanitary
items etc.
