What Is Green Computing?
• Green computing is the study and practice
of environmental sustainable computing or IT.
• Designing, manufacturing, using and
disposing of computing devices in a way that
reduces their environmental impact.
• Important for all classes of systems, ranging
from handheld systems to large-scale data
centers.
• Many corporate IT departments have green
computing initiatives to reduce the
environmental effect of their IT operations.
HISTORY
• Started in the 1992 when US environment protection energy
launched the “Energy Star” Program.
• Energy star was a program of label awarded to computers and other
electronic devices. It was basically used to minimize the use of the
energy and maximize the efficiency of the product/device.
• This labeling program is basically designed to promote and
recognize the energy efficiency in monitors, climate control
equipment and other technologies
Need
The major causes for Green computing are:-
lot of electricity is used
Creates more toxic waste-:
(Due to toxic chemicals involved in the manufacturing)
Printing is often wasteful
Pollution
(due to manufacturing, packaging and disposal techniques)
Steps For Green Computing
 Energy efficient hardware
 Sustainable Green Computing Plan
 Reduce Paper Consumption
 E-Waste Recycling
 Telecommunication
 Use of Energy Star Labeled Products –
 Follow These Basic Computer Ethics-:
 Enable PC power management feature in your operating system.
 Turn off your computer when not in use.
 Screen saver doesn't save energy. So avoid screen saver and turn off your monitor.
 Use LED monitors overs LCD.
 Use sleep mode whenever you leave the PC on.
 Always use the 80-plus certified power supply units for your computer.
Advantages
 Reduces energy usage and controls CO2
 Uses less energy for electronic products during there
production, use and dispose.
 It saves energy and money too.
 includes environment policy to encourage recycling
and lowering energy use by individuals
and business.
Disadvantages
 Rapid technology change
 Some computers that are green may be considerably
underpowered
 High Startup cost
 Still in experinmental stages
Conclusion
 Thus Green computing aims to reduce the unwanted and
harmful effects of computers on the environment by
reducing air, water and soil pollution
 Though the challenges are many but with the ever
increasing research in the fields of science and
technology, we can overcome the hindrances
 Through the small steps that each one of us takes
towards adopting green computing measures, we can
make our environment pleasant for healthy growth
