1. Totally awesome opportunity
for families in need of help
It’s a hard road trying to
find the perfect site to build
on; such is the case with Hab-
itat for Humanity’s most re-
cent project in Wolfe Street,
central Nelson.
The building team faced a
number of weather-related
problems during the realisa-
tion of the sixth in a series of
successful ‘heart’ homes,
from water-soaked soil slip-
ping to a burst sewer pipe.
But inevitable delays of this
kind never stop the momen-
tum of Habitat, not too men-
tion the countless number of
hard working volunteers, and
in this particular case, a small
but enthusiastic habitat team
from Montana, U.S.A.
For those of you who have
not yet been touched by the
Habitat for Humanity philoso-
phy, the first and most effec-
tive way to describe it is with
their mission statement: Hab-
itat for Humanity New Zea-
land is a Christian organisa-
tion that works in partnership
with people of good will and
families in need, to eliminate
sub-standard housing by
building and selling simple,
decent homes on a no-inter-
est, no-profit basis with af-
fordable repayments.
This year 30 local families
sent in applications. After a
thorough, confidential back-
ground check and interview
one family is chosen - the ob-
ligation: to provide a deposit
of $500, to make a commit-
ment to work for 500 hours
on the home or someone
else’s, and to agree to allow
Habitat to give support and
monitoring; as the website
states, Habitat is about giving
a hand up, not a hand out.
The selection process is
taken very seriously and to
qualify you must be a family
in urgent need of good hous-
ing because where you live is
either too small, to expen-
sive, unsafe, unhealthy or
substandard. You must also
have lived in the Nelson Dis-
trict for at least two years
and have permanent residen-
cy in New Zealand. Families
with children are a priority
but there is no preference be-
tween one or two parent fam-
ilies or whanau, marriages or
de facto relationships.
Many past recipients talk
of the huge life changing and
confidence boosting benefits
of the Habitat experience, al-
lowing for a brighter future
for their families, friends and
even the wider community.
Come Sunday, Lynda For-
scutt and her family will open
the door to their new home.
Complications aside, she be-
lieves the whole process is
worth it and the smile she
sees on her children’s faces
reminds her every day.

form you can phone either

bor Lea Avenue, Richmond,
Nelson.
Sunny day for sixth Habitat for Humanity recipient
In modest fashion Linda Forscutt describes
the colour scheme that stamps her new home as
an expression of how her family feels - bright and
happy.
Late last year the Forscutt family was the
sixth in the region to be chosen for Habitat for
Humanity’s ‘affordable housing for families in
need’ scheme, a partnership which sees a family
help to build and eventually own their own home
under Habitat’s no interest, no profit mortgage
agreement. To qualify, families must be in urgent
need of good housing arising from varying fac-
tors including lack of space, and unsafe, unheal-
thy or substandard living. After years of living in
rented homes, some of which prescribing to the
above, Lynda is very much looking forward to re-
ceiving the keys to 65 Wolfe Street, an occasion
which will be marked at the official dedication
this Sunday 3 July.
Widowed some years ago, Lynda single-hand-
edly raised her four children, bringing them
home to New Zealand from Australia eight years
ago. For her, being selected has been a journey
which she describes as like a dream come true.
‘‘At first being chosen didn’t feel real. It wasn’t
until the concrete pad was laid that we were like
‘okay, this is actually going to be a home’. I’ve
never had anything like this happen to me so it is
very exciting.’’ says Lynda.
Equally excited are Lynda’s children - Adri-
enne, Raymond, Rebecca and Lucinda. For years,
she says, the girls have shared one bedroom be-
tween them, so the thought of their own space is
literally and figuratively a breath of fresh air. ‘‘It’s
such a wonderful feeling knowing this is going to
be our home and not a rental. I’ve been able to
choose the colours, the carpet and kitchen join-
ery which is very special’’ says Lynda.
‘‘For the first time in a long time I will be able
to provide stability and security for my family’’
she adds.
Getting to this point has been a culmination of
months of planning, countless hours fundraising
including popular sausage sizzles, hours of hard
manual labour and the compassion and support
of volunteers, friends and family. As part of the
agreement, Lynda herself will contribute 500
hours into the building process (400 before the
family move in) and while children under the age
of 14 are not able to help with heavy manual la-
bour, Lynda says her kids were kept very busy
folding newsletters and running letterbox drops.
With great anticipation Lynda waits for Sun-
day to arrive. She is looking toward a positive fu-
ture concluding that ‘‘Sunday will be the day that
will finally bring peace of mind and harmony to
my family.’’

WAIT ALMOST OVER: The Forscutt family brave the winter chill outside their new home which
they will move into on Sunday. It is the sixth home built by Habitat for Humanity Nelson. (From
left) Raymond, Rebecca, Lucinda and Lynda. Absent is Lynda’s eldest daughter, Adrienne.
