he skeletal system is your body's central framework. It consists of bones and connective tissue, including cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. It's also called the musculoskeletal system
2. INTRODUCTION!
• Skeletal System
• The skeletal system functions as the basic framework
of a body and the entire body are built around the
hard framework of Skeleton.
• It is the combination of all the bones and tissues
associated with cartilages and joints.
• Joints play an important role in the skeletal system as
it helps in permitting the different types of
movements at different locations. If the skeleton were
without joints, then there would be no sign of the
movements in the human body

5. Skeletal System Anatomy
• This skeletal system can be divided into the axial
and appendicular systems. In an adult body, it is
mainly composed of 206 individual bones which
are organized into two main divisions
• Axial skeleton
• Appendicular skeleton.
6. Axial skeleton
• The axial skeleton runs along the body’s central axis,
therefore it is called the central core of the human
body. The axial skeleton is composed of 80 bones and it
consists of
• Skull Bone – It includes 8 cranial bones, 14 facial
bones, 6 auditory ossicles, and the Hyoid Bone
• The bone of the Thoracic Cage – It includes 25 bones
of the thorax- a breastbone and 24 ribs.
• The bone of the Vertebral column- It includes 24
vertebrae bones, the sacrum bone, and the coccyx
bone.

9. Appendicular skeleton
The appendicular skeleton is composed of 126 bones and
it comprises of the-
• Pelvic girdle
• Upper Limbs
• Lower Limbs
• Shoulder Girdle or the Pectoral
• The appendicular skeleton’s primary purposes are to
allow mobility and provide the shape of limbs, arms
and legs. The bones also influence
mineral homeostasis in the appendicular skeleton.
10. Bones
• The primary function of bones is to support the
movement of the body and limbs. Ligaments, tough
connective tissues, hold two bones or cartilages
together at a joint.
• Tendons are flexible, inelastic connective tissue that
firmly anchors muscles to bones. A complicated system
of joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and other
components enables the movement of various bones.
• The adult human skeleton system has 206 bones. There
are three primary layers on each bone: periosteum,
compact bone, and spongy bone.
• The periosteum, a hard layer, protects and covers the
external surface of the bone. It offers protection and
structural support. White, firm, smooth, compact
bone can be found below the periosteum. Bone is
softer in the core and inner layer than compact bone.
To retain marrow, it features tiny openings known as
pores.
13. Cartilage
• The second part of the human skeleton is the
cartilage.
• It is composed of fibres embedded in ground
material or connective tissue.
• Elastin fibres and collagen are the two kinds of
fibres that comprise cartilage.
• The mature cartilage cells, chondrocytes, are
created by chondroblasts, the cells that first
generate cartilage
14. Cartilage

19. Bones
• Normally, the human skull has twenty-two bones –
fourteen facial skeleton bones and eight cranial
bones. The space containing the brain is the cranial
cavity. The calvarium or the skull vault is the upper
part of the cranium, forming the roof and the
sidewalls of the cranial cavity.
• 14+8=22
36. JOINTS
• A joint, also known as an articulation or articular surface, is a connection that
occurs between bones in the skeletal system. Joints provide the means for
movement. The type and characteristics of a given joint determine its degree
and type of movement. Joints can be classified based on structure and function.
37. Classification of Joints
• Structural classification of joints.
• According to the structural classification of joints, they are
divided into 3 types, namely
• Fibrous Joints
• Fixed joints, also called immovable joints, are found where
bones are not flexible. In such joints, bones have been fused
together in such a way that they are fixed to that part, most
commonly to create a structure. A prominent example of a
fixed joint is the skull, which is made up of a number of fused
bones.
• Other examples include the upper jaw, rib cage, backbone,
and pelvic bone, etc.
39. Cartilaginous Joints
• Cartilaginous Joints
• Cartilaginous joints are partly movable joints
comprising of symphysis or synchondrosis
/immoveable joints
• These joints occur only in those regions where
the connection between the articulating bones
is made up of cartilage.
• EXAMPLE: Pubic symphysis. Other examples of
cartilaginous types of joints include the spinal
column and the ribcage.
41. Synovial Joints
• Synovial Joints
• The synovial joints are the most common type of
joint because this joint helps us to perform a wide
range of motion such as walking, running, typing
and more. Synovial joints are flexible, movable,
can slide over one another, rotatable and so on.
These joints are found in our shoulder joint, neck
joint, knee joint, wrist joint, etc.
42. Functional classification of joints.
• Ball and Socket Joints
• Pivotal Joints
• Hinge Joints
• Saddle Joints
• Condyloid Joints
• Gliding Joints
43. Functional classification of joints.
• Functional classification of joints is based on the
type and degree of movement permitted. Based on
the type and degree of movement permitted
44. Ball and Socket Joints
• One bone is hooked into the hollow space of
another bone.
• This type of joint helps in rotatory movement.
• An example ball and socket joint are the shoulders.
• The shoulder and wrist joint belong to the category
of ball and socket joint
45. Ball and Socket Joints
46. Pivotal Joints
• In this type of joint, one bone has tapped into the
other in such a way that full rotation is not
possible.
• This joint aid in sideways and back-forth
movement.
• An example of a pivotal joint in the neck
47. Pivotal Joints
48. Hinge Joints
• Hinge joints are like door hinges, where only back
and forth movement is possible.
• Example of hinge joints is the ankle, elbows, and
knee joints.
49. Saddle Joints
• Saddle joint is the biaxial joint that allows the
movement on two planes–flexion/extension and
abduction/adduction.
• For example, the thumb is the only bone in the
human body having a saddle joint.
50. SADDLE JOINT
• Abduction is the movement away from the midline
of the body.
• Adduction is the movement toward the middle line
of the body
(ABDUCTION)
51. Gliding Joints
• This joint permit two or more round or flat bones
to move freely together without any rubbing or
crushing of bones.
• This joint is mainly found in those regions where
the two bones meet and glide on one another in
any of the directions.
• lower leg to the ankle joint and the forearm to
wrist joint are the two main examples of gliding
joints
54. Osteoarthritis
• Osteoarthritis, abbreviated as OA is a degenerative
joint disease that is caused by breakage of joint
cartilage and underlying bones. It is the fourth
most common cause of disability in the world. The
most common symptoms of the condition include
joint stiffness and pain.
• Treatment for this condition comprises regular
exercise, consuming pain medications, weight loss
and therapy.
55. Osteoarthritis
56.
57. Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder
that primarily affects joints. It is caused when the
body’s immune system starts attacking the joints.
It can happen due to genetic or environmental
factors.
• This disease gives swollen and painful joints,
inflammation around the joint and thickening of
the synovial membrane.
59.
60.
61. Gout
• Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that is
characterised by swollen, tender, hot and red
joints.
• The main cause of this condition is deposition of
monosodium urate monohydrate crystals.
• It gives pain rapidly that can go on for about 12
hours. The most common area affected with gout
is the joint present under the big toe.
