Bhopal Gas Tragedy

Amongst the worst Industrial Disasters of its time.







Occurrence: 3rd December 1984.
Place of occurrence: Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India.
Company: Union Carbide Corporation.
Chemical: Methyl Isocyanate (42 tons).
Series of faulty equipments and neglection.
Three thousand people died within 3hours of exposure and within
12 hours it dissipated to the whole country.
Among the 500,000 people exposed to the gas, 25,000 have died till date and 120,000
continue to suffer devastating health effects as a result of their exposure.

People were dying after 27 years from that disaster

Started in 1935 in bhopal
Phosgene, Monomethlyamine, Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) and the
pesticide Carbaryl, also known as Sevin.
Taken over by DOW Chemicals in 2001.

Dr. Paul Shrivastava, an Associate Professor of Business in New York
University conducted studies that revealed that Bhopal was neither an isolated
incident nor the first of its kind in the corporation.
There had been many accidents of similar nature in UCC's American plants
prior to the Bhopal accident.
He found that 28 major MIC leaks had occurred in UCC’s West Virginia plant
during the five years preceding the Bhopal incident, the last one occurring only
a month before.
The Bhopal plant experienced six accidents between 1981 and 1984, at least
three of which involved MIC or phosgene.

Who is responsible…

There are three main barriers which probably may stop the massive killing.

Water spraying system











There are certain neglecting parameters which triggers the reaction.
42 tones of MIC was stored and only 30 tones was recomended
emergency pressure release valve was not working
Faulty pressure gauge
Rusted iron pipelines
Iron slip which was barrier for separating water was removed
Inert N2 which was supposed to be there in empty part of the tank was missing.
Out of 3 storage tank one must keep empty for emergency and backup.
After the disaster 35 tones more MIC was there which may leads to Bhopal-2
Effects on Human Health


Respiratory Disorders – Irritation to the lungs, causing coughing
and/or shortness of breathing. Higher exposure caused build up of
fluids (pulmonary edema). Caused Asthama.



Cancer Hazard – Caused mutation (genetic changes). It caused
cancer.



Reproductive Hazard –. It may damage the growing fetus.May also
affect fertility in men and women.



Traces of many toxins were found in the Brest Milk of mothers and
were inturn transmitted to the recepient babies.

Flammability: Highly flammable
It combines with water and clogged in tiny space of lungs and
make breathing impossible.
Lungs became swollen followed with vomiting coughing and
rushing for breath.

Additionally, Dichlorobenzenes and Trichlorobenzenes were found in the soil and water
samples.
Toxic Materials in Soil and Water
Lead, Nickel, Copper, Chromium, Hexachlorocyclohexane and
chlorobenzenes were found in soil samples.
Mercury was found to be between 20,000 to 6,000,000 times the
standard level in soil.
Chemical, biotech alternative
(suggested solution)

 Alpha Napthol on carbonyl group addition followed by
reaction with methyl amine would eventually gives
carbaryl.
 This process does not generate or require handling the of
Phosgene.
 This process does not require storage of MIC.
 Use of bio pesticide (tricoderma, entamopathogenic fungi
and viruses)
 Generate insect resistance plant (B.thuringiensis)s.
Compensation and Legal Aspects






Compensation of $470 million ($500 per dead).
Twenty years of passiveness.
Case was reviewed and put up in American Court.
India demanded 2000$ per dead which was never given
Union carbide and DOW corporation were announced responcible
for the mass destruction and company demanded no criminal
charges in future in compansation of $500 per dead.
25,000 KILLED
120,000 SEVERELY AFFECTED

…And you thought only weapons
could cause Mass Destruction….!!!!!
