1. Life is a gift from God to
all creation.
2. Life is a state of being
alive.

soul and body functioning
perfectly.

1. Life is existence associated
with breathing, speaking,
movement, sight, hearing
and feeling which when all
lost, can’t be restored.
2. Life is all about ability to

This activity is to make learners appreciate the
purpose and importance of life and life skills.

Meaning of Skills
The ability to do an activity or job well, especially
because you have practiced it. Eg. You need good
communication skills in order to be a better teacher.
 Skill is focused on the performance of the assigned
work based on planned activities.
Skill also means a talent or ability; dexterity or
expertise.

Definition of Life Skills
Life skills are skills that are necessary or
desirable for full participation in everyday life.
Life skills are abilities for adaptive and positive
behavior that enable individuals to deal
effectively with the demands and challenges of
everyday life (WHO,2001).

•UNICEF defines life skills as “ a behavior change
or behavior development approach designed to
address a balance of three areas: knowledge,
attitude and skills”.
•Life skills are essentially those abilities that help
promote mental well-being and competence in
young people as they face the realities of life.

•Attitude: refers to the wide range of social norms, ethics, values,
culture, tradition, spirituality and perceptions about self and others.
•Knowledge: Understanding that allows concept synthesis and
useful application of information.
•Social Influence: Peer, family, media and similar pressures
affecting young people’s behaviors.
•Life Skill Education: Education addressing specific content to
achieve given goals. The term entails teaching methods that help
learners develop the required knowledge, attitudes and psychosocial
life skills to inform behavior modifications.

Life Skills Needed in Health
Sciences
Three main components of life skills include;
1.The skills of knowing and living with oneself (self
awareness)
2. The skills of knowing and living with others
(interpersonal skills)
3. The skills of making effective decisions (thinking
skills)

•Self-Awareness: It refers to the conscious knowledge of one's own
character and feelings. It focus on relationship and understanding of
themselves, including one’s thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
•Interpersonal Skills: Interpersonal skills are the personal qualities
and behaviors that we demonstrate when we interact with those
around us. We explore how to establish healthy, respectful
relationships, including effective communication, assertiveness and
dispute resolution.
•Thinking Skills: These are cognitive processes that we use to solve
problems, effective decision making, setting relevant goals and asking
questions.

Self-awareness Skills
•Self-awareness is the ability to monitor your own
emotions and reactions.
•It lets you know your strengths, weaknesses, triggers,
motivators and other characteristics.
•Being self-aware means taking a deeper look at your
emotions, why you feel a certain way, and how your
sentiments could turn into reactions.

•Life skills training enhance critical thinking abilities,
which further impacts were living life actively, being
responsible in the job and in future planning too.
•Increasing mental and physical health, pro-social
behavior and decreasing in behavioral, social problems
& self-destructive behaviors.
•Enhanced personal psychosocial Competencies.

It relates to self management skills related to self
awareness, self esteem & self confidence and coping skills.

“life”, and “control over one’s environment”.

In conclusion,
Life skills are integral part of human life, without which
human beings will be lacking key fundamental aspects
of human life. We need to intentionally discover and
grow these skills for better life in school, at homes and
workplaces.
