What is the best RC helicopter?
This is a question that many people have, especially when they want to start with this amazing hobby. Selecting the best RC helicopter for beginners is not an easy task, even some of the best RC helicopter reviews can be confusing if you have little or no experience with these gadgets.
I asked myself this question a while ago, and after many experiences (good and bad), I came with a list of things that I personally check whenever I want to purchase a new RC heli.
Among the many factors I discuss here are: number of channels, spare parts availability, the budget, and more.
Something that is a must is to read comprehensive reviews so that you can make an informed decision.

3. Here is What You Have to Consider…
• Number of Channels
• Indoors or Outdoors
• Stability Control
• Spare Parts
• Flight Time
• Reviews
• Budget
4. A channel is a mean of
communication. Each
channel controls something
on the helicopter. The
more channels the harder
to fly the device.
5. A good way to see things is this:
• 3 Ch. – Beginner
• 4 – 5 Ch. - Intermediate
• 6 or more Ch. – Expert
6. In a 3 channels
configuration each Ch.
controls one of these:
• Up/Down
• Left/Right
• Back/Forward
7. Small and lighter RC helicopters are best for indoors. Big and heavy ones perform
better outdoors.
8. Stability – The Center of Everything
The more stable the easier to fly. Make sure you check this before
purchasing any RC helicopter.
9. Stability Aids – Why are They
Necessary?
Because of something called:
Torque reaction.
The spinning movement of the
main rotor blades generates an
equal and opposite spinning
movement on the helicopter. This
is not good for stability.
10. How does an RC Helicopter is Stable
Then?
In order to eliminate this effect, RC helicopter
designers came up with a few ideas, here I
present you the ones that I’ve seen and
understand.
11. Stability - Tale Rotor Blade
The tale rotor blade
spins to provide
impulse in opposite
direction to the
torque reaction,
eliminating the effect
at all.
12. Stability - Coaxial Main Rotor Blade
Adding a second set of
main rotor blades
spinning in opposite
direction to the first one
eliminates the torque
reaction.
These are the so called:
Coaxial Helicopters.
13. Stability - Gyro Control
An electronic device (most helis have it today) senses the torque
reaction and activates one or more actuators, such as the tail rotor
blade, to eliminate the torque reaction effect.
You guessed right, these are the: Gyro Helicopters.
14.
15. Spare Parts – Lengthen the Life of Your
Heli
Consider purchasing at least one set
of spare parts when you first buy
your heli, trust me, you’ll need it.
An extra battery is also a good idea.
16. Flight Time
This is not a rule,
but you’ll need 50
to 60 minutes of
charging time to
get 8 to 10 minutes
of flight time.
This may seem very
little, but is the
standard these days.
18. Read Reviews
I love to buy from Amazon and read
the best RC helicopter reviews to
make an informed purchase.
This is the best way to make sure
you get a great RC helicopter.
19. Last but not Least – The Budget
Plan your budget to get the gadget you want. Make sure to include the
cost of spare parts and maintenance of your RC helicopter.
