3. Syllabus Overview
• Big Topic: You choose a topic of personal and societal
importance that is debatable
• Annotation Graphic Organizers: Will help you gather
information from sources and organize the information so
that you can easily prepare your annotated bibliography
• Expert interview and fieldwork: You will create the
questions you want to ask your expert based on the
information you need in order to learn more about your
topic. You will choose a fieldwork site closely related to
your topic.

• Proposal: This is a short 5-10 minute presentation you will
make to a small group (probably your CREW) where you share
what you’ve learned about your topic so far
• Annotated Bibliography: This will be a summary of the sources
you used including your expert interview and fieldwork
• Research Outline: Will help you plan and organize your
research paper
• Research Paper: Where you will answer your research
question and pull together all of your evidence from your
sources (will be 8-10 pages long)

• Product Proposal: A description of the product you will create as
a result of your research
• Authentic Product: (1) Conduct a seminar; (2) Participate in a
local campaign; (3) Create a physical product related to your
topic; (4) Build an online campaign; (5) Create a letter-writing
campaign
• Reflection Paper: 3-5 page paper where you will reflect on
yourself as a learner and how this process has grown and
changed you as a student and person
• Presentation: Present your research questions and findings as
well as explain your product and address your research process
6. Who is involved in the Senior
Expedition Process?
• CREW leaders for support
• English teachers and AP Writing Intensive teachers
will help provide instruction and direction to write
the annotated bibliography, research outline and
research paper
• Advisors will help guide you as you more clearly
define your topic, choose a product, find experts
and fieldwork and begin designing your
presentation
7. Topic Selection
• Proposed topics are due by 9/21
• Remember to choose a topic that is important to
you
• The topic should have societal importance and be
debatable
8. What’s Next?
• Syllabus must be signed by both you and your
parent.
• Return the signed page to your CREW leader by
Friday, Sept. 11th.
• Start thinking about what you might choose as
your topic
