5. Semi-Detached
We chose the name Semi-Detached because it represents the
relationship between the three characters and also Sue’s
detachment from reality.
We considered calling it: Loose Connections, Solitary,
Detached. But none of these names have the same effect as
Semi-Detached.
It’s not about
a house!!!!
6. Characters
Sue – played by Hannah
Recently admitted from a mental home, taking medication for her
schizophrenia.
Mazy – played by Alex
A distant and innocent daughter of Sue.
Steve – played by Callum
Sue’s loving husband who is worried about her mental health and is
supportive.
7. Narrative
Our short films main concepts are time and technology, using flashbacks.
Sue has been suffering for a while and has to rely on the people around her. The
strongest attachment she has is with her daughter, Mazy and Steve is her brick wall.
After everything that she has been through she begins to question what is actually
reality. She spent a year in Severalls Mental Hospital and now she has to cope with
the real world. But how does she cope with the stress of life outside the mental
hospital?
8. Propp’s Theory
All three characters are victims in our story but in various different ways. Sue is a
victim to a mental condition which is prominent through out the film. Steve is
victimized because of what he has to deal with; his wife struggles and he has to cope
with reality. Mazy suffered from a collision and they all have to deal with this fact.
10. Costume
Sue – Normal clothes (jeans, t shirt)

Mazy – tomboy, motorbike jacket,

11. Location
Hannah’s house for kitchen/dining
scenes
Bright, cheerful, homely environment.
Food cooking in background.
Front of house when motorbike pulls up,
Alex walking into house.
Alex’s house for mental home.
White, bare, creepy, dark. Similar to a
mental home.
12. Lighting
Up until the end of the film the lighting will be bright and homely, except
for any flashbacks.
Flashbacks will be eerie, dark and made clearly as a flashback. Distorted
effects to make it seem messed up.
The end of the film will be distorted, dark & creepy.
13. Style
We will be using over 8 close ups throughout the film. The most
significant close up is of Sue’s tattoo.
We plan on using a graphic cut to go from Sue looking back at her diary
to her writing the entry whilst she was in the mental home. This will
show that the diary is an important part in her life.
We use a match-on-action when Sue is chopping vegetables, we cut to
Steve setting the table.
Shot-reverse shot, we use this when Sue is talking to Mazy and Steve.
Eye line match when Sue is writing her diary.
