12. Capilano University
• 14 buildings - 517,000 sq. ft.
• 4 buildings added to C-OP summer of 2010
• C-OP buildings range from 50,000 to 130,000 sq. ft.
• Baseline data is currently being collected
13. Energy Consumption on N. Van. Campus
• Electrical consumption for all 14
buildings monitored by Pulse
• Electrical (2009) consumption:
6,937,000 kWh
• Natural gas (2009) consumption:
39,700 GJ
• 10 buildings not in COP program have
Pulse EMIS for energy awareness
program
14. Why Pulse EMIS?
Available in the C-OP program
Engages students and employees
in energy conservation on campus
Easy to use
16. Current Initiatives
• BC Hydro funded Workplace
Conservation (WCA) Campaign
• Launched Pulse software as part of 2010
Green Week
• Collecting baseline data to run an energy
conservation contest in November
17. • WCA: spread conservation message
• Reduce electrical consumption by 5%
(approx $20,600 annually)
• Achieve community engagement of 20%
Goals
18. • Dashboard appeal – students, employees
and janitorial staff
• EMIS gives maintenance staff a new view
of building consumption
• Visual reporting creates impact
• Linked ‘waste’ to building occupant
behaviour
• Using Pulse to engage people, create
awareness, and encourage conservation
action
Results So Far
19. #1 How to get people to engage with the
online dashboard
Solutions
• One-on-one presentations
• Make it fun, give prizes, take suggestions
• Use software to show participants’ positive
impact
Challenges in Occupant Engagement
20. #2 Resources
• Time/people to carry the
message
Solution
• Link dashboard to other events
happening on campus
Challenges in Occupant Engagement (Cont’d)
21. Pulse Energy’s team is easy to work with
Promoting energy savings campaigns is not always easy
One-on-one conversations work better than mass
information dumps
There is a ton of energy savings to be had!
Key Lessons Learned
22. Add more layers of information to the Dashboard to make it
“the” go-to spot for sustainability on Campus
Adding links to our Campus website to provide additional
information to users
More energy conservation contests planned
More fun!
Future Plans

Software as a ServiceConnects to any metering hardware or DDC/BASPowerful analytics to normalize energy data for square footage, occupants, weather, time of day/year.Includes three modules: Management module for energy/facility managers (used extensively by people like Brian in school districts) Reporting module for portfolio managers and executives (also used by energy managers like Brian to keep track of all their schools and to easily keep track of energy savings and ROI of upgrades/retrofits) Dashboard for occupants and the public (can be used to engage staff and students in energy awareness programs)

Slide 1 - 4 Buildings have been entered into BC Hydro's C-Op program. Project began Summer 2010.Phase 1 - Birch Bldg, 130,000 square feetPhase 2 - Cedar Bldg, 50,000 sq ft.Phase 3 - Fir Bldg, 91,000 sq ft and Library bldg 84,000 sq ft.Electrical consumption is currently being monitored in all 4 buildingsBaseline data is currently being collected. Once the data has been collected for a minimum of nine months our consultant will begin the investigation phase.
Electrical consumption for each of the 14 buildings on our North Vancouver campus are being monitored by Pulse Energy Software.Approximately 48,000 square meters or about 517,000 square feet.Annual consumption (2009) 6,937,000 kWh5 natural gas meters are being installed, and will be monitored by PulseAnnual Natural gas consumption (2009) 39,700 GJ10 buildings are not in the C-Op programSome too small to warrant re: energy savings potential. Installed because we want to use the Pulse EMIS to be accessible for all community as part of the energy awareness programs.
Why Pulse EMIS?- BC Hydro C-Op program- Desire to engage all students and employees in energy conservation on campus- How easy it is to use- everyone can access- very visual- people 'get it'- layers of information (users, operators, management)
Why Pulse EMIS?- BC Hydro C-Op program- Desire to engage all students and employees in energy conservation on campus- How easy it is to use- everyone can access- very visual- people 'get it'- layers of information (users, operators, management)
Current Initiatives- Launched a BC Hydro funded Workplace Conservation (WCA) Campaign- Launched Pulse Energy software as part of our 2010 Green Week activities- Collecting baseline data to run an electrical energy conservation contest in November
Goals- WCA - Key message: Use what you need and nothing more (don't be wasteful)- reduction of 5% in electrical consumption (approximately $20,600 annual)- we want to achieve community engagement of 20%. (students, faculty, staff, exempt and administration and our on-site janitorial and food services contractors)
What we've achieved so far...- Students love the transparency of the dashboard- Janitorial staff like the dashboard- Maintenance staff are looking at buildings consumption from a new/different perspective- Reporting is visual, and creates impact.- We've been able to link 'waste' within a building to people.... example of the film studio lights left on all weekend - so that we can begin to create training materials that are specific to the building users.- Using Pulse software to engage people, increase awareness and move to taking action to reduce energy.
#1 Challenge- how to get people to engage with the site.Solution- prizes, suggestions- make if fun- one-on-one presentations- personalize in a positive way - use the software to show people they are/can make a difference.
#2 Challenge- Resources - having the time/people to carry the message and keep the website updatedSolution- link the Dashboard to other activities happening on campus. For example - during classroom presentations, lunch hour tabling events, our Campus Sustainability Network meetings etc.
Lessons learned- working with the Pulse Team is easy - they are passionate about what they're doing and are willing to experiment and make changes based on customer feedback- promoting energy savings campaigns is not always easy- one on one conversations work better than mass information dumps- there is a ton of energy savings to be had!
Future Plans- Adding more layers of information to the Dashboard, making it 'the' go to spot for sustainability on campus. Using links to our Campus website to provide additional information to users.- More energy conservation contests planned.
