- 72. Readers’ Advisory events Canterbury Bankstown Libraries 5 days Readers’ Advisory challenge Library Lovers’ Day
- 73. 5 days Readers’ Advisory Challenge The rules of the challenge were: No reviews, no explanations, just the covers. Each day who printed a book cover would nominate a new reader to accept the same challenge.
- 74. Printed book covers were displayed in the library wall with heading “Librarians’ Choice” Nomination wall

The benefits gained by this little challenge: • It was a good way to share favourite titles with staff and community members. • It boosted knowledge of different titles by sharing and the involvement of our library staff was a positive activity. • It helped customers to look at those recommended books, available in our collection. • It also helped us to increase our borrowing circulation as well.

- 81. Out comes of all events held in our Libraries were positive. All events went so well. Bankstown librarians participated delightfully. Our patrons took much interest in the displays and activities. It was an amazing response of borrowing displayed library items. Feedback response from the community was very encouraging. They liked our Canterbury Bankstown libraries Facebook posts and photos of all our events. They verbally exchanged thoughts with staff members and appreciated through emails. Outcomes from readers’ advisory perspectives: All events helped to enhance our libraries’ membership drive, lift the circulation figures and all that demonstrates it as a success.

- As I am sure you all know, 2 March each year is Cat in the Hat Day, celebrating Dr Seuss’s 115th birthday. On this day it is customary to read a favorite book with your child. It could be one of Dr. Seuss’s books or it could be another children’s book author. The whole point of the day is to engage children in reading and to get them to read on a regular basis. So, as 2 March fell on a Saturday this year, we decided to celebrate by holding a Cat in the Hat Storytime followed by time to read with the cats at the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter.
- As you can see, we set up so marquees near the cattery for the storytime. Attendees were invited to dress up as your favourite Dr. Seuss character and bring along a picnic blanket for fun stories and activities. There were some very curious kittens watching everything we did from afar…
- As you will see in the subsequent slides, Sora was the star of this event. She saw the camera and was straight over to angus to introduce herself and discuss her brief.
- The event consisted of three story time sessions of 20 mins each followed by up to 30 minutes in the cattery reading to the cats.
- Part of the reason for hosting these events is to socialise the cats. Often the cats come to the shelter are overwhelmed, timid or scared and the rhythmic sound of reading can help the to the cats get used to people. As you can see, at this event, most of the cats were curious, playful and friendly, enjoying the company of 69 children and their families over the morning.
- Depending on the cats preference and temperament, attendees read to the cats in reading chair or as the cats relaxed in their cat condos.
- As much as the cats enjoyed the attention and being read to, sometimes they just had to go. Our contingency plan was Library Cat, who first appeared in a Facebook promotion for the Library a few years ago, and is happy to be read to for hours.
- Those cats who just felt they needed some time out either left of their own accord or were assisted back to their condo’s by Shelter staff. Cats have excellent hearing as well as being excellent listeners, and if they preferred were able to watch and listen to stories from the comfort of their condos. Any cats who were unwell stayed in their condo’s, or were kept in a separate quiet space.
- This was the 4th time we have hosted this event with animal shelter. It has booked out consistently for each event, with 3 sessions of 30 people per session, along and an additional 10 or more to the drop in session at 12.00pm. So we are holding it again, on Saturday 16 March. I would just like finish with our latest promotional video for this event.
- If you love cats, you will love this. If not it’s only a five minute presentation! Sutherland Shire Libraries have been running a very successful Read with the Cats program with the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter for the past 6 months. Where attendees come along to the animal shelter to read with the cats. They can bring their own books, or read books donated by the Library.
