THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE INTERNET
IS DIVIDED INTO THREE STAGES:
10. The Internet is used as the means of mass media
and different types are growing and spreading now .
They are of great popularity, though their audience
is less than of “traditional” mass media. Almost all
types of mass media have got sites in the Internet,
information is published on many sites and it is
regularly renewed. Usually the Internet mass media
have the main income thanks to the advertising, but
also they can be sponsored by a broadcasting
organization.
12. • In Russia (July, 2010) more than 93 thousand

of them are private.
• According to the appraisals of international
agencies, Russian mass media are not free.

channels by the state.

invested into the press advertisement.
19. According to the surveys, which were held by
the American organization Pew Research Center
for the People & the Press, in 2008 the Internet
in the USA became more important source of
information than daily newspapers. About 40%
of people informed that they used the Internet
to get news. Only 35% of people read
newspapers. Nevertheless, the television was
the most popular source of the news: about
70% of people informed that they watched the
news on TV.
20. The television is one of the main kind of

homes have got one TV set, and the
majority of them have got more than that.
NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox and CW are the

steadily developing.

cultural life and various art directions are

26. The television in Great Britain
The television is an influential and dominant kind
of mass media in modern Britain, and also it is a
very popular amusement. Some people prefer to
rent TV sets, because in this case they are
repaired free of charge.
Current news, documentaries, sports, educational
and cultural programs are of high quality. However,
series, films, quizzes and different shows of
dubious quality are shown.
27. England has got one of the most developed
publishing industries in the world. More than
2000 local, 1300 weekly, 200 daily and
Sunday’s newspapers are published in this
country. Two out of three Englishmen read
daily national newspapers, three out of four
Englishmen read Sunday newspapers.
Local and regional newspapers are in great
demand. The biggest British editions are “News
of the World” ( the circulation is about 4,4
million copies, “Sun” (about 3,8 million copies);
“Daily Mail” (the circulation is about 2,1 million
copies), “ Mirror” (2,3 million copies).

of the country work thanks to their advertisers and
broadcast mainly pop-music, news and programs
of the local meaning. Radio is the most quick-
growing kind of mass media in Britain.
The government sets up new international
commercial radio stations in order to extend
broadcasting process. The first license was given
to Classic FM and the second one was given to
Virgin 1215. The government wanted to vary
broadcasting system when its programs could be
suitable for any tastes and interests.
29. THE INTERNET IN GREAT BRITAIN
Many magazines have got electronic versions, and
British observers think that in the future printing
versions of magazines will be only a “visiting card”.
The Internet is actively used by BBC. Its main site is
the biggest in the world. The number of visits can
achieve 150 million a month.
60% of young Englishmen watch television programs
on the Internet, though their quality is worse.
30. Millions of people can’t live without television in the
modern world, and broadcasting is appreciated by people
thanks to the musical programs and news. Newspapers also
can give any necessary information. But the Internet is the
most popular source of information.
In the epoch of information technologies it is very difficult
to imagine our life without mass media, because they are very
important in the life of people. It is the best way to be aware of
political and economical events, and numerous well-known
achievements.
