• In 80-85% of sexual assaults, the perpetrator and
  the victim know each other
• About 65% of all sexual assaults take place in the
  victim’s home
• 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually
  assaulted by the age of 18
• Only about 4% of sexual assaults involve a
  traditional weapon (knife or gun)-Trust is the #1
  weapon
• Alcohol is the #1 date rape drug
Nightmares, flashbacks
Denial, trying to “get over it” and forget
Different areas of everyday life are
 impacted, world is shaken, turned upside
 down
Some seek counseling, others don’t
No timeline for recovery, everyone copes
 different ways
Listen, listen, listen
Talking about sexual assault is a very difficult
 thing to do. Survivors of sexual violence need
 support from family and friends during this
 process. Be as supportive as you can be.
REMEMBER: It is NEVER the victim’s fault.
The ABUSER is to blame.
To start the healing process after a sexual
assault or harassment, one option is seeing a
trained counselor from the local rape crisis
center (Rape Victim Advocacy Program) or
talk to someone you trust-friend, family,
school counselor, teacher.
Caitlin and Samir recently started going out.
They have mostly been hanging out together
with their group of friends, but last Friday
night Samir told Caitlin that his parents were
out for the evening and he invited her over to
his house. Caitlin was looking forward to
spending time alone with Samir. She bought
a new sexy outfit to wear over to Samir’s
house.
When Caitlin arrived, he told her that she
looked great and handed her a beer. Then
they sat on the couch and started watching a
movie. They soon started kissing. Caitlin
enjoyed kissing Samir. But soon Samir started
putting his hands under her shirt. Caitlin told
him not to do that. He felt offended because
he had heard Caitlin’s previous boyfriend brag
about having sex with her. So he told her that
he thought she was more mature than that.
He also told her that he thought he was
important to her. Then he kept trying to put his
hands under her shirt and then her skirt. Caitlin
felt embarrassed that he thought she was acting
immature, but she was not ready to have sex
with Samir yet. But she was also afraid of losing
him. She told him that she was scared and that
she wanted him to stop and she even started to
cry a little. Samir told her not to worry because
he loved her and would take care of her. Caitlin
froze; she was too afraid to move. Then Samir
forced her to have sex.
 What did Samir do to force Caitlin to have sex?
 Caitlin gave Samir signs that she did not want to have sex.
  What were those signs?
 Rape often causes serious physical and psychological
  problems. What are some bad things that could happen
  to Caitlin because of being raped?
 What are some bad things that could happen to Samir
  because he raped Caitlin?
 Are there places in the story where Samir could have
  done something different so that the story ended
  without rape?

  • 25. Listen, listen, listen Talking about sexual assault is a very difficult thing to do. Survivors of sexual violence need support from family and friends during this process. Be as supportive as you can be. REMEMBER: It is NEVER the victim’s fault. The ABUSER is to blame.
  • 26. To start the healing process after a sexual assault or harassment, one option is seeing a trained counselor from the local rape crisis center (Rape Victim Advocacy Program) or talk to someone you trust-friend, family, school counselor, teacher.

They have mostly been hanging out together with their group of friends, but last Friday night Samir told Caitlin that his parents were out for the evening and he invited her over to his house. Caitlin was looking forward to spending time alone with Samir. She bought a new sexy outfit to wear over to Samir’s house.
  • 29. When Caitlin arrived, he told her that she looked great and handed her a beer. Then they sat on the couch and started watching a movie. They soon started kissing. Caitlin enjoyed kissing Samir. But soon Samir started putting his hands under her shirt. Caitlin told him not to do that. He felt offended because he had heard Caitlin’s previous boyfriend brag about having sex with her. So he told her that he thought she was more mature than that.
  • 30. He also told her that he thought he was important to her. Then he kept trying to put his hands under her shirt and then her skirt. Caitlin felt embarrassed that he thought she was acting immature, but she was not ready to have sex with Samir yet. But she was also afraid of losing him. She told him that she was scared and that she wanted him to stop and she even started to cry a little. Samir told her not to worry because he loved her and would take care of her. Caitlin froze; she was too afraid to move. Then Samir forced her to have sex.
