BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Historic Traylor-Peacock House is a house that was built in 1895, which was during the Queen Anne Vicrorian Era. Houses built between 1850 and 1920 are considered part of Victorian architecture. In the beginning of the Victorian era, green, brown, red, and mustard were the preferred colors. It is not until the 1880's that the color white made an appearance on windows, doors, and stair baulasters. White made the homes appear much brighter. The term “Painted Ladies” refers to a house that was painted with three or more colors. The different colors are used to enhance the architectural details of a building. Upholstery fabrics and draperies in Victorian times would have been heavy, warm velvets, silk or damask which would also have come in deep, rech reds, greens, browns, mauves and purples. The furniture used in the Victorian era had many curves and was very ornate.
CONCEPT STATEMENT To keep the same characteristics of the houses that were built during the Victorian era we decided on three different exterior colors that we found in the Sherwin Williams Historic Victorian Collection. We kept the colors close to the natural tones, unlike the Painted Ladies homes which were very bright and vibrant. The fabrics that we chose are a combination of deep, rich colors as well as neutral browns and greens. For the furnishings, we tried to keep it very decorative but we also have a few rooms, and pieces of furniture, that we decided to keep modern. Even though our kitchen, bathrooms, and office are very modern, we incorporated Victorian accessories to bring the whole house together.
