The presentation focuses on how the education system is making the talented students especially in India, never get what they deserve. Some of the problems are common in many education systems globally and needs to be resolved to ensure equal opportunities to students with non-subjective talents.
2. Indian Education System
The Indian school education System divides the students as per age group.
◦ Lower Primary Education: Age group 6-10
◦ Upper Primary: Age group 11-13
◦ Secondary: Age group 14-15
◦ Higher Secondary: Age group 16-17
4. Major Flaws
◦ Marks show the IQ
◦ Very old(2 centuries) and not suited for the current age
◦ Non-uniform division of credit over arts and science papers
◦ Less encouragement to new and non-conventional ideas
◦ Theory is given priority over practical.
5. Sufferings of Students due to Flaws
◦ Kids are marked as mentally unfit to learn because they have lower marks than others
◦ 60% of engineering students graduating every year lacks basic skills
◦ The education system is focused on training us for industries but not giving us knowledge.
◦ Students end up with a lot of degrees but very little skills and knowledge.
◦ Students are studying to get a tag of a reputed college.
◦ Due to reservation we are performing well to uplift the lower caste but failing to give enough credit to
many talented from the upper caste.
6. Degrading Research and Publications
Quality
◦ The students are studying from colleges which many people haven’t heard of then go for research
because of their obsession of tag from a reputed college. This has resulted in sudden degradation in
quality of PhD scholars India is producing.
◦ The research quality in India is degrading. Few days back UGC made a committee whose main motive
would be to focus on improving the quality of research. It will focus on finding inconsistencies and
reasons that are leading to allegations being made globally on the publications.
◦ This clearly shows that India will be focusing on generating more papers like “The Raman Effect” by C.V.
Raman which focused on a phenomenon that sounds bizarre and what many scientists found difficult to
believe.
7. Causes of Failing Education System
◦ The present education was designed about 2 centuries ago and it’s not suited to this age.
◦ Indians have a mindset that Mathematics and Science can only ensure a better future.
◦ Kids are taught since a small age that a degree will help in his career.
◦ Schools focus on facts and theories that are way too narrow.
◦ Schools and colleges are failing to nurture the creativity.
◦ Caste based reservation in higher education.
8. Possible Solutions
◦ Stop teaching targeted facts and figures.
◦ Shift the focus from exams to knowledge.
◦ Students should get an option to select subjects and to float over a few minor papers so they could
learn what they are interested in.
◦ Change in patterns of Competitive exams, especially engineering college entrance examination. Like, a
student having interest in Computer science should not be made to take the chemistry test.
◦ Replace the caste based reservation with Economy based reservation.
9. Conclusion
The Indian education system is in grave need of a reform. There are changes needed in the system
to be made. A system which will treat students equally irrespective of interest, caste, religion and gender.
The system needs to be more focused on encouraging students to use concepts learned from different
subjects to be applied in one project. This will help them understand that in real life, problems are not
categorized by subjects. This will also help them develop a better understanding of nature and life. We
should stop marking a student as dumb or mentally unfit to learn, this lowers their confidence and
literally make them dumb. If a kid is not doing great in studies, talk to him/her. Ask them what they like,
what are they interested in, what do they love to do. If they love to dance then send the kid to dance
school. Schools and Colleges has become a factory producing a lot of damaged product. Lets take this
seriously and join hands to bring the revolution.
