METHOD
THE EMERGENCE OF SOCIAL WORK
AS A PROFESSION
A. Historical antecedents
• The diversity is great challenge in social work
which can be met only by deep philosophical and
historical study on the features of exiting condition
particularity.
• This research is done through conceptual analyze
and country-wise basic rules and principle of social
work.
• This research contribute to the theoretical self-
concept of social work, it is an intellectual capacity
which can develop and modernize social work.
• General principle of science , political and social
philosophy plays great role in philosophy of social
work.
• Analysis of philosophy is closely related to the
history of social work.
• An example of behavioral philosophy are family
philosophy, educational, science philosophy and
philosophy of law.
• The basis of social work is poverty which is
connected to welfare work in complex. This
concept of social work is found to have been
existed since the ancient time as religious of the
world principle.
Pre-Modern History
• When Constantine I Legalized the Christian churches
in the western countries then churches established
orphanage, hospitals, Ashrams with the grants of
the government in part.
• The churches had already developed office of the
post of deacons, pastors or clergymen by 590 A.D.
to help poor people with food.
• In lack of effective and capable government for
welfare activities Pastors played role in the west till
18th century.
• Christian churches had made so much impact on
the European society.
• At that time charity work was taken as the
responsibility of the people as symbol of religious
act.
