Exnora Greater Chennai has launched a week-long awareness campaign to promote
smoke-free Bhogi by creating awareness among students at various schools and
colleges in North and South Chennai.
Exnora Greater Chennai, National Green Corps, and Presidency Government Girls
Model Higher Secondary School, Egmore jointly organized a special program with a
students human chain to launch the Smoke-Free Bhogi awareness campaign today at
the school premises.
R. Govindaraj (President of Exnora Greater Chennai) said that the Civic Exnoras
and Exnora Innovators clubs in and around the city will conduct several awareness
programmes through rallies, distribution of pamphlets, awareness through autos, street
plays and various other modes. The campaign commenced on Jan 7 and will extend
up to bhogi day. He urged students to persuade their parents and neighbours not to
burn tyres and plastic materials, as they cause toxic pollution to the atmosphere.
G. Thangaraj (Co-ordinator of NGC Chennai district) advised the students to explain
to their friends, relatives and parents about the need for a clean environment for healthy
living. He also said that although today they are children, in future when they become
decision makers their action will be in the best interest of the environment.
Thiruvalarselvi (Chief Educational Officer, Chennai District) narrated the origin
of the Bhogi festival and urged the students and teachers to collect their unwanted
materials in the waste collection container and if possible donate them to the needy
and thus avoid burning and polluting the environment.
Earlier, Kanmani, the Headmistress of the school welcomed the guests, teachers
and students and explained the necessity to protect our environment. She also spoke
on the need to observe a smokeless Bhogi to keep our atmosphere clean and pollution
free. The Guests were presented with Saplings to promote School’s motto - Go Green.
More than 500 students of the school participated in this awareness program. After
the awareness meeting, the students belonging to various volunteer groups formed
a human chain in front of the school, on the Gungureddy Street, Egmore, holding
placards, raising slogans and distributed handbills to create awareness among the
public.
Awareness campaign on smoke-free bhogi
Chennai Rivers Restoration Trust (CRRT) and National green Corps (NGC) organised
an awareness campaign on Cooum River restoration to students of Chennai Corporation
schools near Aminjikarai by involving 1050 students.
Dr.Kalai Arasan, (Project officer, CRRT) inaugurated the cultural campaign in the
presence of G.Thangaraj (Dist coordinator, NGC) stressed the need for the conservation
of water and biodiversity.
Thangaraj briefed the students role in maintaining the Chennai eco system.
A team of experts from Alternate media center, Loyola college headed by Dr.
Kaleeswaran performed the campaign with Puppetry and Karagattam to educate the
theme in a good manner.
The vote of thanks was given by HM Kalaichezhiyan.
