2. Online Learning
Online learning is a term used to describe distance or
correspondence courses that are offered over the
Internet. The courses offered through online learning
cover a wide range of subjects & audiences. This
educational method is growing in popularity as a cost-
effective method of providing access to education for a
large population.
3. Type of Courses
There are two types of online course access:
• open access course
• restricted access course
Open access allows virtually anyone with an Internet browser
to view the course material. This type of online learning does
not require interaction with an instructor. The material
covered can range from very specific instructions to university
level courses. This initiative removes the barriers to advanced
knowledge and allows anyone with the interest to learn.
4. Restricted Access Courses
Restricted access is used to limit the class to registered
students. These courses offer instructor interaction and
are typically the method used by courses that require
grades upon completion. e.g. MOOC's available at
SWAYAM (Study Web for Active-Leaning for Young
Aspiring Minds) platform
5. Accessibility
It is more efficient for both the educator and the
student to access course materials online. From the
educator perspective, the course lectures can be
recorded once and reused. The recurring cost is for
marking and moderating the class communications.
This greatly reduced the staff time and costs.
6. Affordability
Online courses allow students to complete coursework
from a wide range of locations and remove the time
restriction to access course lectures. Students are no
longer required to travel to the class and many course
materials are included in the fee.
7. Quality
The material for online courses provided by accredited
educational institutions has been carefully reviewed
and approved before the course is offered. Many
introduction and intermediate courses do not change,
as the material is static. As a result, the courses are
stable and can be reused as needed.
8. Cost Effectiveness
Due to the reduced expenses for online courses, the
fees are sometimes lower than a standard instructor-
led course. Reduced course costs increases the
availability of education to a broader number of
people. Additional savings by the student in
transportation and related costs make online learning
the most cost effective learning method available.
9. Utilisation of Technology
Technology continues to expand to meet the needs of
online students. These tools include mobile audio and
video viewers, improved online interactive tests, and
tool and course management software. Students
utlilise mobile technology for accessing the courses
through apps.
10. Benefits of Online Learning
• Live intractions
• Tracking of learning activities
• Continuous monitoring
• Global connectivity
• Cost effectiveness in terms of time and travelling
11. Emergence of Mobile Learning
In this fast changing world, different stakeholders will have to work
together to develop new educational models to cater for new
generations of learners who will be using mobile technologies that do
not exist as yet. The current educational model is outdated because it
was developed before the advent of information and communication
technologies. The current model, based on classroom-based face-to-
face delivery, is geared towards educating a certain segment of the
population. Educators need to re-conceptualize education and make
the shift from education based on
Triple A model ( Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere)
12. Mobile Learning
Mobile learning can transform pedagogy to cater for new
generations of learners because it offers the opportunity to
use active learning strategies and for learners to learn in their
own context. Mobile learning (m-learning) is education via
the Internet or network using personal mobile devices, such
as tablets and smartphones to obtain learning materials
through mobile apps, social interactions and online
educational hubs. It may be defined as online learning with
mobile technology.
13. Features of Mobile Learning
It is flexible, allowing students access to education
anywhere, anytime.Students use mobile apps and tools
to complete and upload assignments to teachers,
download course instruction and work in online social
groups to complete tasks. The use of mobile technology
allows for cloud teaching where access to people,
resources and information will float freely regardless of
location (Sutch, 2010). Learners in different time zones
and locations will be able to access tutors when
needed.
14. Advantages of Mobile Learning
• Easy access to available OER(open educational resources)
• Students from different cultures express themselves more
readily compared to face-to-face situations through Mobile
technology
• To develop communities of learners, where learners can
tutor and help each other in the learning process, thus
resulting in high-level learning.
15. Future of Mobile Learning
The next generation of mobile learning will be more
ubiquitous; there will be smart systems everywhere
that learners can learn from. Learners will learn from
multiple sources rather than using one device. Also, the
next generation of mobile technology will be virtual,
with virtual input and output capabilities.
16. Benefits of Synchronous Learning
• LIve intractions
• Learner's engagement
• Tracking of learning activities
• Continuous monitoring
• Global connectivity
