GloCell has been touched by the courage of our CEO, who participated in this year’s 702 Sun

remarkable R25 million was raised for the Boys and Girls Town organisation.
Thank you to every single GloCell employee who supported Alessandro in this challenge, and

The CEO SleepOut 2015 From
the pen
of our
CEO
I have been requested to share my experience on
the CEO SleepOut 2015.
R25 million was raised for Boys & Girls town,
which is an organisation that takes homeless
children off the streets and provides them with
shelter, food and education. Since children are
our future the purpose was noble and the money
will go a long way in providing our kids with a
better future. This would also impact on our
society in many respects.
From a personal perspective my experience
sleeping in the street for one night has been an
interesting one.
It was cold but the fire helped. Amazingly
sleeping with a card board box over you
generates a lot of heat. But the air that penetrates
on your eyes, ears and nose is chilling. I have
never experienced swollen eyes, chafed lips and
numb ears to this extent. I could hardly hear in
the morning.
The pavement is hard and no matter how you
try and make yourself comfortable you end up
having limited (3 hours) and broken sleep. Your
bones on your hips, back and neck hurt.
On the positive side time goes by slowly. The only
option is to therefore chat to people next to you
and it is social and something that perhaps we
have lost as humanity. In the old days we
probably spent a lot of time around a fire as a
tribe. Different levels of engagement, more
human.
So the experience gave me glimpses into what it
could be like to be homeless.
However the reality is that I am not homeless. I
have not been hungry for days, I did not have to
sleep in fear of being attacked or robbed. I did not
wake up hungry. I did not have to go scrounging
in dustbins for food or beg. I have the comfort of
my family. I had parents growing up.
Take a Girl Child to Work Day
The GloCell Group accommodated 12 girls for theTake a Girl Child to Work Day
initiative, which encourages girls between Grade 10 and 12 to shadow people
in the working environment in order to gain exposure to the business world.
Each of the girls were given a GloCell notebook, pen & pencil set and a small
hamper from Cell C and were allocated to a department within the GloCell
Group.
• Deon Marimuthu
• Kobie Coetzee
• Anusha Naidoo
• Roland Aspeling
• Chris Konz
• Desiree Choonoo
Below is a testimonial from the girls regarding their experience:
We really enjoyed our day at GloCell and would highly recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity. We
were fortunate to experience first-hand what it is like working in a corporate environment - this experience
taught us that there is a lot more to a business than what we originally thought and it helped us to see which
aspects or departments we find interesting and would enjoy, and may even want to pursue as a career. This
experience has highlighted just how much work goes into running a successful business and that team work
and job satisfaction are of utmost importance. We feel that it was highly beneficial for not only us but to any
teenage girl eager to run her own business one day. Over all, our experience at GloCell was an educating, fun
and memorable one. Our day was well spent and we ended up learning a lot.

HEROES of the MONTH!
July is Nelson Mandela month, and what better way to celebrate our South
African culture than a dedication to the Top 10 African Restaurants!
A burgeoning of African restaurants offers testimony to our country’s
cosmopolitan nature, with people flocking here from all over the world.
Some restaurants offer traditional South African food, whilst others specialise
in the cuisine of specific cultures.
For a real African experience this July, visit the following restaurants:
Johannesburg and Surrounds
District Six Eatery: A small, vibrantly decorated restaurant in Emmerentia. The
menu they offer is a mixture of boerekos and Cape Malay.
Lekgotla: Joburg’s newest African themed restaurant is in a prime position, in
the Nelson Mandela Square. The food is more North African than South, and
the menu boasts dishes such as lamb shank tagines, oxtail braised with red
wine and beer and even Karoo lamb.
Sakhumzi’s: Is right next door to Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s old house and
just down the road from Nelson Mandela’s former residence, which has been
turned into a museum. The food ranges from typical Sowetan cuisine to that
of a more Western taste.
WandiesPlace: On a visit to South Africa just over a year ago, Brad Pitt stopped
for a meal at one of Soweto’s gems, Wandies Place. The menu includes oxtail
stew, lamb chops, beef potjie, dumplings and ting (soft porridge), to name
but a few.
Moyo Melrose Arch: One of the best-known African themed restaurants in
Johannesburg. Diners are greeted by wishee-washee ladies, who bring
bowls of water in which they can wash their hands. They can later return to
have their faces painted by the same ladies. Popular for its flamed lamb fillet
stuffed with spinach, mozzarella and peppadew, lamb chops, chicken tagine
and grilled ostrich fillet.
Durban and Surrounds
Mo-Zam-Bik Hillcrest: Based on the authentic Mozambique “Barraca” which,
in English, means “hut”, the taste buds of all patrons embark on a Mo-zam
adventure, in an explosion of taste.
Sondela Tavern at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom: Launched
and styled after a South African township Shabeen, a selection of dishes and
South African cuisine are on offer. The wooden tables are set around a fire
place where the chefs cook Shisa Nyama to order.
The Pitz (South African Braai Restaurant) Durban North: Whether you prefer
a delicious homemade burger or if marinated pork ribs are your thing, this is
the place to find genuine South African food. The Pitz prides itself on drawing
inspiration from an authentic South African tradition, namely: the BRAAI.
The Rainbow Terrace Hilton Hotel Durban: Soak up the laid-back ambience
garnished with fresh buffets of International and African specialties. Elegant,
casual and enrobed in a traditional Zulu atmosphere, you can expect items
on the menu such as Prawn Masala, Oxtail Casserole and a trilogy of curries.
A2A at Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom: This Africa to Asia buffet
restaurant offers guests an Afro-Chic dining experience. The heart of its
attraction lies in the fusion of African, Middle Eastern and Asian foods on
offer, with over 100 dishes to choose from!

WHAT’S UP
News24’s Gridwatch app available for iOS
and Android
Source: 24.com
Gridwatch, the News24 mobi-site and app that has become the ubiquitous
load-shedding daily planner for power-less South Africans, is now available to
download on both iOS and Android.
Gridwatch was first launched as a mobi-site on 5 February and then as a free
app for Android later that month. The iOS app went live on 11 June and within
two days of launch, has reached the top free app rank in the SA iTunes store.
Gridwatch’s popularity is due to the powerful user tool that allows a“search and
save” of customised locations that provides businesses and individuals alike
with the ability to plan around the times that Eskom takes down the power.
“We’ve built the biggest load-shedding database in South Africa,” says Head of
Product Development at 24.com, Cathryn Reece.“The Eskom schedules are
disaggregated across municipalities which meant that South Africans struggled
to find their local and national schedules and to plan for outages.”
With a direct link to Eskom, so that Stage levels are accurately reported, and
a full set of Eskom schedule updates once a week, News24 is able to keep in
sync with schedules for those customers supplied directly by Eskom. Municipal
schedules are updated manually, as and when new documentation is released.
“Initially we had to source every schedule available, and then manually collate
the data into a format that our developers could use,” says Reece. “The daily
updates from the Media Desk are then manually captured to ensure that we
have a daily picture of what is happening, which is the most essential function
for most users. Users can also report missing areas, schedules or technical errors
directly to News24”.
Gridwatch is the only app that allows for customised alerts for all saved
locations.“We’ve invested a tremendous amount of human resource and
technology into speeding up our push alerts so that users get real time
information about load-shedding,”says Reece.
With over 340,000 app users daily (Apple and Android) and over 2 million screen
views in total, the app continues to climb the popularity ladder.
“As a nation, we’ve had to accept that the reality of load-shedding is here to stay
for a while. News24 developed Gridwatch to help South Africans plan as much
as possible around this very disruptive challenge. We will continue to focus on
developing technology that meets today’s information needs and to keep it
accessible and accurate,” concludes Lisa MacLeod, General Manager, Digital
Publishing.

ding schedules for Android or IOS:

Mobile coverage to reach 6.1 billion in 2020
Source: Bizcommunity
The latest annual Ericsson’s Mobility Report reveals that smartphone
subscriptions will double in five years’time, reaching about 6.1 billion subscribers.
Between these new subscriptions, almost 80% will come from Asia Pacific, the
Middle East and Africa. Advanced mobile technology will be a common occurrence
around the globe by 2020, with 70% of the world’s population using smartphones
and 90% being covered by mobile broadband networks.
The comprehensive update on mobile trends shows that growth in mature
markets comes from an increasing number of devices per individual. In developing
regions, it comes from a swell of new subscribers, as smartphones become more
affordable. The number of mobile subscriptions in Q1 2015 was around 910 million
for all of Africa, including 21 million new subscriptions.
The reporter shows that in sub-Saharan Africa, GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions will
remain predominant up to 2020, due to the high number of lower income
consumers using 2G-enabled handsets. With the continued rise of smartphones
comes an accelerated growth in data usage: smartphone data is predicted to
increase ten-fold by 2020, when 80% of all mobile data traffic will come from
smartphones. Average monthly data usage per smartphone in North America will
increase from 2.4 GB today to 14 GB by 2020.
Rima Qureshi, Senior VP, Chief Strategy Officer, Ericsson, says, “This immense
growth in advanced mobile technology and data usage, driven by a surge in
mobile connectivity and smartphone uptake, will makes today’s big data
revolution feel like the arrival of a floppy disk. We see the potential for mass-scale
transformation, bringing a wealth of opportunities for telecom operators and
others to capture new revenue streams. However, it also requires greater focus on
cost efficient delivery and openness to new business models to compete and
remain effective.”
Apps drive growth
An expanding range of applications and business models coupled with falling mo-
dem costs are key factors driving the growth of connected devices. Added to this,
new-use cases are emerging for both short and long-range applications, leading
to even stronger growth of connected devices moving forward. Ericsson’s forecast
points to 26 billion connected devices by 2020, confirming we are well on the way
to reaching the vision of 50 billion connected devices.
Each year until 2020, mobile video traffic will grow by a staggering 55% per year
and will constitute around 60% of all mobile data traffic by the end of that period.
Growth is largely driven by shifting user preferences towards video streaming
services and the increasing prevalence of video in online content including news,
advertisements and social media.
When looking at data consumption in advanced mobile broadband markets,
findings show that a limited number of subscribers generate a significant
proportion of traffic. These heavy data users represent 10% of total subscribers but
generate 55% of total data traffic. Video is dominant among heavy users, who
typically watch around one hour of video per day, which is 20 times more than the
average user.
GloCell Marlboro Gardens Football Youth Day Festival
GloCell was the proud sponsor of the GloCell Marlboro Gardens Football Youth Day Festival, which took place on the 13th of June at Marlboro Gar-
dens Football Club.
The festival is held on an annual basis and an excess of 100 teams from the PWV area, ranging from under-6’s to under-10’s, participated on the day.
Each child that was involved in the Soccer Festival was presented with a GloCell branded medal for their participation and effort.
The GloCell team was there in full force, distributing Kaizer Chiefs Mobile Starter Packs which could be RICA’d on site, activated and loaded with R29
airtime. This enabled the visitors to enter into a competition to win a Kaizer Chiefs Mobile Hamper filled with exciting Kaizer Chiefs memorabilia, as
well as a smartphone.
On the day, R2,440.00 was raised through a raffle ticket sale, which will be donated to a charity organisation in Alexandra on behalf of GloCell and
Marlboro Gardens Football Club.
The event was a resounding success with around 1,000 spectators and players attending the festival.
Nelson Mandela Day - 18 July 2015
Nelson Mandela Day was launched in
recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on
18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN
General Assembly.
It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made
a year earlier, which is for the next generation
to take on the burden of leadership in
addressing the world’s social injustices. Then
he said“it is in your hands now”.
It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life
and legacy. It is a global movement to honour
his life’s work and act to change the world for
the better.
The message behind Mandela Day is simple –
each individual has the ability and the
responsibility to change the world for the
better.
If each one of us heeded the call to simply do
good every day, we would be living Nelson
Mandela’s legacy and helping to build the
country of our dreams.
The baton of leadership has been handed over
to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive
difference.
Keep an eye out for any Acorn news to see how
you can get involved on this day!

WHAT’S UP News24’s Gridwatch app available for iOS and Android Source: 24.com Gridwatch, the News24 mobi-site and app that has become the ubiquitous load-shedding daily planner for power-less South Africans, is now available to download on both iOS and Android. Gridwatch was first launched as a mobi-site on 5 February and then as a free app for Android later that month. The iOS app went live on 11 June and within two days of launch, has reached the top free app rank in the SA iTunes store. Gridwatch’s popularity is due to the powerful user tool that allows a“search and save” of customised locations that provides businesses and individuals alike with the ability to plan around the times that Eskom takes down the power. “We’ve built the biggest load-shedding database in South Africa,” says Head of Product Development at 24.com, Cathryn Reece.“The Eskom schedules are disaggregated across municipalities which meant that South Africans struggled to find their local and national schedules and to plan for outages.” With a direct link to Eskom, so that Stage levels are accurately reported, and a full set of Eskom schedule updates once a week, News24 is able to keep in sync with schedules for those customers supplied directly by Eskom. Municipal schedules are updated manually, as and when new documentation is released. “Initially we had to source every schedule available, and then manually collate the data into a format that our developers could use,” says Reece. “The daily updates from the Media Desk are then manually captured to ensure that we have a daily picture of what is happening, which is the most essential function for most users. Users can also report missing areas, schedules or technical errors directly to News24”. Gridwatch is the only app that allows for customised alerts for all saved locations.“We’ve invested a tremendous amount of human resource and technology into speeding up our push alerts so that users get real time information about load-shedding,”says Reece. With over 340,000 app users daily (Apple and Android) and over 2 million screen views in total, the app continues to climb the popularity ladder. “As a nation, we’ve had to accept that the reality of load-shedding is here to stay for a while. News24 developed Gridwatch to help South Africans plan as much as possible around this very disruptive challenge. We will continue to focus on developing technology that meets today’s information needs and to keep it accessible and accurate,” concludes Lisa MacLeod, General Manager, Digital Publishing. Between these new subscriptions, almost 80% will come from Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Advanced mobile technology will be a common occurrence around the globe by 2020, with 70% of the world’s population using smartphones and 90% being covered by mobile broadband networks. The comprehensive update on mobile trends shows that growth in mature markets comes from an increasing number of devices per individual. In developing regions, it comes from a swell of new subscribers, as smartphones become more affordable. The number of mobile subscriptions in Q1 2015 was around 910 million for all of Africa, including 21 million new subscriptions. The reporter shows that in sub-Saharan Africa, GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions will remain predominant up to 2020, due to the high number of lower income consumers using 2G-enabled handsets. With the continued rise of smartphones comes an accelerated growth in data usage: smartphone data is predicted to increase ten-fold by 2020, when 80% of all mobile data traffic will come from smartphones. Average monthly data usage per smartphone in North America will increase from 2.4 GB today to 14 GB by 2020. Rima Qureshi, Senior VP, Chief Strategy Officer, Ericsson, says, “This immense growth in advanced mobile technology and data usage, driven by a surge in mobile connectivity and smartphone uptake, will makes today’s big data revolution feel like the arrival of a floppy disk. We see the potential for mass-scale transformation, bringing a wealth of opportunities for telecom operators and others to capture new revenue streams. However, it also requires greater focus on cost efficient delivery and openness to new business models to compete and remain effective.” Apps drive growth An expanding range of applications and business models coupled with falling mo- dem costs are key factors driving the growth of connected devices. Added to this, new-use cases are emerging for both short and long-range applications, leading to even stronger growth of connected devices moving forward. Ericsson’s forecast points to 26 billion connected devices by 2020, confirming we are well on the way to reaching the vision of 50 billion connected devices. Each year until 2020, mobile video traffic will grow by a staggering 55% per year and will constitute around 60% of all mobile data traffic by the end of that period. Growth is largely driven by shifting user preferences towards video streaming services and the increasing prevalence of video in online content including news, advertisements and social media. When looking at data consumption in advanced mobile broadband markets, findings show that a limited number of subscribers generate a significant proportion of traffic. These heavy data users represent 10% of total subscribers but generate 55% of total data traffic. Video is dominant among heavy users, who typically watch around one hour of video per day, which is 20 times more than the average user.

GloCell Marlboro Gardens Football Youth Day Festival GloCell was the proud sponsor of the GloCell Marlboro Gardens Football Youth Day Festival, which took place on the 13th of June at Marlboro Gar- dens Football Club. The festival is held on an annual basis and an excess of 100 teams from the PWV area, ranging from under-6’s to under-10’s, participated on the day. Each child that was involved in the Soccer Festival was presented with a GloCell branded medal for their participation and effort. The GloCell team was there in full force, distributing Kaizer Chiefs Mobile Starter Packs which could be RICA’d on site, activated and loaded with R29 airtime. This enabled the visitors to enter into a competition to win a Kaizer Chiefs Mobile Hamper filled with exciting Kaizer Chiefs memorabilia, as well as a smartphone. On the day, R2,440.00 was raised through a raffle ticket sale, which will be donated to a charity organisation in Alexandra on behalf of GloCell and Marlboro Gardens Football Club. The event was a resounding success with around 1,000 spectators and players attending the festival. Nelson Mandela Day - 18 July 2015 Nelson Mandela Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, which is for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices. Then he said“it is in your hands now”. It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better. The message behind Mandela Day is simple – each individual has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better. If each one of us heeded the call to simply do good every day, we would be living Nelson Mandela’s legacy and helping to build the country of our dreams. The baton of leadership has been handed over to us. It is in our hands now to make a positive difference. Keep an eye out for any Acorn news to see how you can get involved on this day!
