2. LIGHTING IDEAS AND INSPIRATIONS
Borough Market is a wholesale and retail food market in
BOROUGH MARKET
Southwark, South East London, England. It is one of the
largest food markets in the world, and is regarded by some
as one of the highest quality markets in the United King-
dom, selling a large variety of foods from all around the
world.
The Market is made up of four main areas, Crown Square
(bounded by Southwark Street, Stoney Street and Bedale
Street), Green Market (underneath the railway bridges next
to the cathedral), the Jubilee Market and the shops and res-
taurants surrounding the Market, located in Stoney Street,
Park Street and Bedale Street.
The market, which is focused historically on fruits and veg-
etables, has in recent years added stalls dealing with the
fine food retail market
BUILDINGS
The present buildings were designed in 1851, with additions
in the 1860s and an entrance designed in the Art Deco style
added on Borough High Street in 1932. A refurbishment be-
gan in 2001.

LIGHTING CONTROL
The lighting control system will provide the following:
• luminaires to switch on and off on an agreed time programme
• luminaires to be able to dim up and down as daylight levels influence internal light levels in the
market. Daylight linking via photocell control. If light levels in the interior due to daylight only are too
high (i.e twice the required levels) then luminaires will be able to be switched off
• during the evening, either all luminaires can be dimmed down to the minimum output or some of
the luminaires are switched off and the others are dimmed down so that the light levels due to the
pendant luminaires are as low as required
