3. FRONT COVER
This front cover connotes the
theme of candy and sweetness
throughout, attracting young
girls and teenage girls, attracted
to the different shades of pink,
creating a fun, fantastical feel.
This font has been imitated to look as if it’s made from strawberry laces, furthering this
theme of sweetness and candy. This makes the name ‘Katy Perry’ feel sweet and fun, enticin
listeners in. By making this title so large, its emphasising to listeners who’s album this is and
who is lying in the clouds, which, with their light pink shade, look like candy floss. Creates the
feeling of escapism and dreaminess.
This is similar to the font of ‘Katy Perry’, but
instead of being a strawberry lace, it has
been made, with its white and red stripes, to
look like a candy cane.
Whilst this album cover, initially
(with its many shades of pink
and its sweet connotations),
comes across as innocent and
fun, targeted towards young
girls, this cover has also widened
its audiences. Appearing naked,
covered by the candyfloss
clouds, Katy Perry is sexualised
and provocative, seductively
looking to the front. This will
attract male audiences,
widening audiences and profits.
This presents how a female artist
can easily use her body to sell
products.
These playful colours, with the addition of a seductive female
singer is very conventional of the pop genre.
4. BACK COVER
The barcode has been put
here, making sure that it
doesn’t ruin the feel of the
cover, but allows it to be
scanned.
The record label has been
put down here, creating a
connection between this
singer and the label,
promoting them.
Copy right information for legal
reasons.
The candyfloss clouds are also
shown here, furthering the sweet,
innocent themes of the album. This
makes the singer seem fun and
friendly, targeting young female
audiences.
The track list is central to this back cover, making
sure audiences know that these 12 songs are
featured on the CDs. They are in a bold, red font,
making the list stand out against the pink
background.
The replacement of the
‘Os’ in the tracklist with
the old-fashioned round
sweets adds a whimsical
feeling, furthering the
sweet, candy
connotations.
5. INSIDE COVER
This image is shown on the inside cover of Katy
Perry’s digipak.
The pink,
candyfloss clouds
further this fun,
fantastical feeling
(which is
conventional of the
pop genre), making
the singer seem
friendly, fun and
girly, attracting
younger female
audiences.
However, this digipak continues to attract a wider audiences than just young girls. The fact Perry is topless here, only just not
showing the rest of her breasts will attract male audiences due to the provocative, seductive nature of this image.
I feel that Katy Perry had probably put
this more outwardly seductive image
on the inside cover of the digipak so
that parents are more likely to buy
their children this album. If she
appeared like this on the front cover, it
may deter parents from purchasing
this. By having it on the inside cover, it
is more hidden, but still continues to
sexualise her.
The way she is looking
seductively towards the camera
sexualises her further. The red
lipstick and dark eye makeup is
stereotypically considered as
‘attractive’ and ‘sexy’, attracting
male audiences. Aligns with Laura
Mulvey’s ‘male gaze’ theory!!
6. CDs and INSIDE BOOKLET
I could not find the other inside cover for this digipak so I am going to analyse the booklet inside, as well as the two CDs.
These two CDs carry on the
theme of candy and sweetness,
making the album (and the
singer) seem fun, friendly and
sweet. This is conventional of the
pop-genre.
They are cleverly designed,
as well as being child-
friendly, making parents
more likely to buy these for
children. I feel that I would
be more likely to choose
these CDs to play at home
due to their eyecatching
design.
The cakes shown here, once
again, highlight the themes of
this album (candy, sweets etc.),
making the overall digipak seem
exciting, bright and colourful.
This is conventional of the pop
genre.
Once again shown as provocative and sexy, in her
red lip stick and fairly low cut dress. She is also
looking up to the camera seductively, attracting
male audiences, and increasing profits.
Her stance here appears fairly powerful, with
her hands on each of the cakes, signalling
Katy Perry’s confidence. This may indicate
the up-beta nature of her music, as well as
making people want to watch her live (due to
her confidence).
