11. Oradea Oradea, first known as Varadinum, was mentioned in 1113. For a long period of time Oradea witnessed a “golden era” (with a pick in XV century) that raised the interest of for science and especially astronomy. That was a period of strong coupling of Oradea with all the important cultural and scientific centers from the late medieval age and Renaissance. The geographical and economical strategic position of Oradea maintained his importance in time. The presence in Oradea of important persons from the middle part of Europe, like the bishop Andrei Batory – closed to the Hungarian king Robert Carol de Anjou, Andreas Scolary that established the first library here and made a strong link with the Italian scholars, cardinal Giuliano Cesarini, the bishop Ioan Vitez of Zredna – mentor of the king Matei Corvin and the great humanist Nicolaus Olahus.

12. The Fortress From the very beginning (11 th century), Oradea Fortress had the role of a polarizing nucleus of the settlements in the Oradea Area, being a political, military, legal, administrative and religious centre.
