This document discusses VMware's vCloud Air hybrid cloud platform. It begins by describing how vCloud Air addresses the "digital deficit" faced by enterprises by increasing agility and reducing costs with a hybrid cloud model. It then provides an overview of vCloud Air's core compute, networking, storage and management capabilities. Specific capabilities highlighted include dedicated and virtual private cloud options, gateway networking services, migration tools, and APIs for monitoring and management. Use cases and customer examples are also presented to demonstrate how vCloud Air has helped organizations improve application development and testing, implement disaster recovery, and extend existing enterprise applications.

Questions that this presentation will attempt to answer for customers:
What is vCloud Air?
How is it better at solving my problems?
Where is the service located?
Is it secure? Has it been certified?
Are other companies using it?
Are your customers happy with the service today?
How are they using it?
What does it cost?
What is the future direction of the service?
What should I do next if I’m interested?
Design of this presentation:
There are three sections, introduction, examples, roadmap
The slides are designed to be modular in nature, please adapt to customer meeting needs
The slides are not intended to be read, some slides have a lot of material on them to help as leave behinds
This is not a keynote (many to one) style presentation.
This is designed for individual customer meetings or webex sessions
15 minutes for the first part, the rest is supporting material
This is what many customer share as the marco-level IT challenge:
With new demands being placed on IT departments every day, enterprises need to smartly connect their infrastructure, software applications, data and operations capabilities in order to become agile, intelligent, digital businesses.
IT budgets (broadly speaking) remain low to flat
LoB budgets for technology growing very fast
Digital initiatives driving demand
Digital business initiatives = mobile, ecommerce, customer experience, analytics
Your LoBs are technically savvy, they know what they want to get done
IT operating at a digital deficit, the ability fulfill, not keep up with pace of demand
The industry experts also see this pattern, and estimate that by 2019, LOB spending on tech will increase to 75% of all IT spending.
Hybrid Cloud - opportunity to increase business agility, while also lowering costs and mitigating risks.
Increase agility and speed, by delivering resources to the LoBs faster
Increase control and reduce security risks, by maintaining consistent set of standards and policies between your on-premises environment and your cloud environment
Reduce costs, by consolidating or optimizing your use of on-premises resources via a SDDC based architecture.
VMware is the best suited to attack these issues; lower the cost of what you have today, improve agility to help LoB address needs faster, build application to help grow revenue.
One company that provides a cloud service, while also selling the software stack to run your own private data center.
Realizing Hybrid Cloud is extremely challenging.
When evaluating public cloud services, most customer find they are constrained by the amount of change or rework need to get their applications to run on most public cloud services.
Customers that chose a generic cloud service realize that they can’t managing IT as one fungible pool of resources. Security rules are compromised, there are multiple tool sets, your control and policies for allocating IT becomes complex. You start losing the TCO and economic benefits originally perceived with public cloud computing.
What customers have been asking for….
I have a vApp running somewhere
It’s not a desirable long-term platform: too expensive, aging, hard to maintain, static
I’d like to take the application and run it somewhere better, when I want to, and under my own terms.
I’d like the app to perform just a well, if not better
And I’d like a strategy where I can manage my IT platform, just as I do my on-premises or current data center option
Essentially, I want all the benefits of running my app on the cloud as a do today
But I don’t want all the headache and non-essential spend of managing and securing and networking a different platform.

Geographically available in all major continents, with specialized services in North America for federal sector entities.
We take customers security and data very seriously. We continue to push the envelope on standards and processes to ensure this, and we validate through certifications. This is true of both vCloud Air and vCGS.
NEW: VMware vCloud Air has completed the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Consensus Assessments Initiative Questionnaire (CAIQ). CAIQ provides industry-accepted ways to document what security controls exist in IaaS, PaaS and SaaS offerings. Visit the CSA STAR Registry to view VMware’s response to over 250 questions related to cloud security, trust principals, and assurance controls.
We’ve enjoyed very good customer adoption since launching the service this year (Jan, 2014)
Very good balance across all sectors
Slightly higher adoption North America
But some very good traction in EMEA as well
Customer are attracted to how we have packaged and priced our offering, plus many enjoy the accelerated access to VMware technologies delivered as a service.
We deliver solutions that are precisely organized for business challenges they face: packages that are optimized for performance, flexibility, IT continuity
We offer flexible commercial terms that are consistent with how IT organizations are accustom to buying: EA, Subscriptions, or On-demand, mixture of all three models are possible
By using the service – you have faster access to the innovations delivered by Vmware. EG. Networking services are enabled by R&D performed on VMware on-premises stack
In addition, you are able to give Vmware feedback on these new capabilities.
Here is a very short summary of how we price and package the service.
I recommend we reserve time for a further briefing on specific pricing models; however, in a nutshell here are the advantage of our model vs. other cloud providers:
We simplify the allocation of your overall capacity; we understand that predicting and forecasting the exact configuration of your VMs is nearly impossible
So we sell flexible pools of capacity – individual VM can change without having to provision new VMs
We offer many core IT services as part of the overall subscription – there are no extra charges for things like firewalls, Nating, setting up VPNs, HA, redundancy, etc.
There are usage-based services that we do charge: bandwidth and certain services
And we do offer favorable terms based on the duration of your contract, overall commitment volume, or payment terms
Talking points
VMware commissioned benchmarking tests from Principled Technologies, who determined that vCloud Air delivers 7X the storage performance than equivalent instances on AWS, and 2X the compute power over equivalent instances on Microsoft Azure. This comparison also ignores the free redundant compute capacity that is built into every vCloud Air virtual data center for High Availability and load balancing purposes. To achieve this level of redundancy and performance management in Azure would require twice as many instances – the recommended Azure approach is to double up to get redundancy.
All of this means you get more compute and storage performance for what you pay. OR you pay less to get the same level of performance you get on other clouds.
What makes it different?
AWS: lots of rework, multiple steps, lost fidelity of application, they will never let you run their stack on-premises
MSFT: flexibility, but only if you run Microsoft
VMWARE: flexibility, complete set of application and OS support, simplified management
Flexibility Application Compatibility
Performance
Continuous Innovation – emphasize this with VMWARE
As you heard from those customers, we have several different entry points for vCloud Air
In fact, we have 5 “starting points” for customers who want to start their hybrid journey’s… and they can start at any step:
Dev/test: Take a low-risk first step and free up valuable on-prem data center capacity by moving pre-production to the cloud.
Use the next application upgrade cycle to move classic enterprise applications like Exchange or Desktop-as-a-Service to the cloud
Extend the data center for disaster recovery, third-party backup, seasonal workloads, and additional geo locations
Build and host new applications in traditional 3-tier applications using Java
Or you can build next generation applications using our PaaS, Cloud Foundry
It’s incredible to think that we have just gotten started when you look at what customers have started to do with the service…
Objective:
