Definition of Well Integrity Management
 The concept of well integrity are stages of operations from
design, construction, and to production impact well integrity.
The financial impact can be very high; loss of revenue of
the hydrocarbons that escape, damage to the reservoir
because of the uncontrolled flow.

Mud functions
Mud assists in making hole by:
1. Removal of cuttings
2. Cooling and lubrication of bit and drill string
3. Power transmission to bit nozzles or turbines.
Mud assists in hole preservation by
4. Support and stabilization of borehole wall
5. Containment of formation fluids/gas.
It also:
6. Supports the weight of pipe and casing
7. Serves as a medium for formation logging
8. Prevents hole wash outs due to turbulence or dissolution
9. Must be compatible with drilled formations and
encountered formation fluids/gas.
7
Mud functions Cont.
It must not:
• 10. Corrode bit, drill string/casing and surface facilities
• 11. Impair productivity of producing horizon
• 12. Pollute the environment.

LEAK - OFF TESTS
• The leak-off test establishes a value for the fracture gradient
to be used in kick tolerance calculations for the next section
of hole to be drilled.
• It provides the basic data needed for further fracture
calculations and it also tests the effectiveness of the cement
job.
• Leak-off tests should always be taken to the leak-off
pressure unless this exceeds the pressure to which the
casing was tested.
• In some instances (such as when drilling development
wells) this might not be necessary and a formation
competency test to a predetermined limit might be all that is
required.
11
Hydraulic optimization
The main objectives of circulation during drilling
are:
 To clean cuttings from the bottom of the hole
and prevent re-grinding.
 To clean cuttings from the bit and prevent bit
balling.
 To carry the cuttings up the annulus and out of
the hole.
 To cool the bit
12

7
13
Highest penetration rate
Maximum bottom hole cleaning is important to obtain the
highest penetration rate. It is achieved by either:
Maximum hydraulic power at the bit, or
Maximum hydraulic impact force.
Why Production Logging ?PLT
Producing Wells
•Estimating the flow rate of each phase for each
perforated interval
•Or Determining the sources of each phase (OIL,
WATER, GAS)
•Investigating a cross flow
In order to diagnose a production problem such as water
production, free gas production…etc

Well control and barriers
• Completions are usually part of the well control envelope
and remain so through the life of the well. They are part
of the fundamental barrier system between the reservoir
and the environment.
• ‘At least two tested independent barriers between
hydrocarbons in the reservoir and the environment at all
times’.
• The primary barrier is defined here as the barrier that
initially prevents hydrocarbons from escaping; for
example, the mud, the tubing or the Christmas tree.
25
Well control and barriers
• The secondary barrier is defined as the
backup to the primary barrier – it is not
normally in use until the primary barrier fails.
• The secondary barrier must be independent
of the primary barrier, that is, any event that
could destroy the primary barrier should not
affect the secondary barrier.

Well Planning Objective
The objective of well planning is to formulate a program
from many variables for drilling a well that has the
following characteristics:
• Safe
• Minimum cost
• Usable
30
11/22/2020
16
Safety
• Safety should be the highest priority in well planning.
• Personnel considerations must be placed above all other
aspects of the plan.
• The well plan must be designed to minimize the risk of
blowouts and other factors that could create problems.
31
PRE-JOB CONSIDERATIONS AND PLANNINGCement placed in the annulus between the casing and
formation must:
1 Isolate zones by restricting fluid movement between
formations.
2 Support and bond the pipe.
3 Protect the casing from corrosive elements, such as
brines.
4 Prevent blowouts by forming a quick seal to hold back
formation pressures.
5 Protect casing from shock loads during drilling
operations.
6 Seal off zones of lost circulation.

Corrosion Control
• The conduction of elaborated corrosion surveys on the
operations to identify the corrosion problems and
recommend the relevant corrosion control programs.
• Preparation of the survey report covering the survey findings
,and recommendations. Preparation of the cost estimate
,and the economical feasibility study for the corrosion
mitigation programs .

  • 6. 11/22/2020 6 LEAK - OFF TESTS • The leak-off test establishes a value for the fracture gradient to be used in kick tolerance calculations for the next section of hole to be drilled. • It provides the basic data needed for further fracture calculations and it also tests the effectiveness of the cement job. • Leak-off tests should always be taken to the leak-off pressure unless this exceeds the pressure to which the casing was tested. • In some instances (such as when drilling development wells) this might not be necessary and a formation competency test to a predetermined limit might be all that is required. 11 Hydraulic optimization The main objectives of circulation during drilling are:  To clean cuttings from the bottom of the hole and prevent re-grinding.  To clean cuttings from the bit and prevent bit balling.  To carry the cuttings up the annulus and out of the hole.  To cool the bit 12
  • 7. 11/22/2020 7 13 Highest penetration rate Maximum bottom hole cleaning is important to obtain the highest penetration rate. It is achieved by either: Maximum hydraulic power at the bit, or Maximum hydraulic impact force. Why Production Logging ?PLT Producing Wells •Estimating the flow rate of each phase for each perforated interval •Or Determining the sources of each phase (OIL, WATER, GAS) •Investigating a cross flow In order to diagnose a production problem such as water production, free gas production…etc An Important Reservoir Management Tool

  • 13. 11/22/2020 13 Well control and barriers • Completions are usually part of the well control envelope and remain so through the life of the well. They are part of the fundamental barrier system between the reservoir and the environment. • ‘At least two tested independent barriers between hydrocarbons in the reservoir and the environment at all times’. • The primary barrier is defined here as the barrier that initially prevents hydrocarbons from escaping; for example, the mud, the tubing or the Christmas tree. 25 Well control and barriers • The secondary barrier is defined as the backup to the primary barrier – it is not normally in use until the primary barrier fails. • The secondary barrier must be independent of the primary barrier, that is, any event that could destroy the primary barrier should not affect the secondary barrier. 26

  • 15. 11/22/2020 15 Data Gathering 29 Well Planning Objective The objective of well planning is to formulate a program from many variables for drilling a well that has the following characteristics: • Safe • Minimum cost • Usable 30
  • 16. 11/22/2020 16 Safety • Safety should be the highest priority in well planning. • Personnel considerations must be placed above all other aspects of the plan. • The well plan must be designed to minimize the risk of blowouts and other factors that could create problems. 31 PRE-JOB CONSIDERATIONS AND PLANNINGCement placed in the annulus between the casing and formation must: 1 Isolate zones by restricting fluid movement between formations. 2 Support and bond the pipe. 3 Protect the casing from corrosive elements, such as brines. 4 Prevent blowouts by forming a quick seal to hold back formation pressures. 5 Protect casing from shock loads during drilling operations. 6 Seal off zones of lost circulation. 32 Primary Cementing
