AMINE TREATMENT & SULPHUR RECOVERY
28 – 29 July 2016 | Kuala Lumpur
Environmental pressures requiring the removal of sulphur prior to the sale and consumption of hydrocarbon fuels has
been increasing relentlessly during the past three decades. Indeed, in recent years the rapidity of the reduction in
sulphur has accelerated to such an extent that in many countries some of the lighter hydrocarbon fuels are virtually
sulphur-free, levels of 10 ppm being common.
The removal of sulphur from liquid hydrocarbons is almost exclusively achieved by hydrotreating, where the sulphur in
the hydrocarbon is converted to hydrogen sulphide (H2S) by reaction with hydrogen over a metal oxide catalyst at high
temperature and pressure. Removal of the H2S from the effluent gas is generally facilitated by absorption in a “lean”
amine solution. Subsequent heating of the “rich” amine liberates the H2S which is then fed to a sulphur recovery unit
where elemental sulphur is produced. Similar amine (and other) treating processes are employed in associated and non-
associated gas production facilities where there is a requirement to reduce the sulphur content of the treated gas to
acceptable marketable levels.
This 2-day training course will review amine treating and sulphur recovery theory and operational practice, and the
various types of processes utilised. Key troubleshooting techniques will also be examined and explained.
Upon completion of this training course participants will be able to:
Gain an appreciation of amine treating and sulphur recovery technology and their role in the upstream and
downstream oil and gas sectors;
Develop an understanding of the importance of gas sweetening, acid gas removal and sulphur recovery in crude oil
refining and natural gas treatment facilities;
Become familiar with acid gas removal and sulphur recovery chemistry and analysis in relation to crude oil refining
and natural gas processing;
Understand the process criteria for the selection of amines for particular treating applications;
Become familiar with amine treating and sulphur recovery unit operations;
Examine various tail gas treating technologies;
Learn to utilise appropriate troubleshooting techniques.
Who Should Attend
Process Plant Operators and Operation Supervisors (petroleum refineries, oil and gas production facilities, and
petrochemical plants) wishing to expand their knowledge and capabilities;
Process Engineers (petroleum refineries, oil and gas production facilities, and petrochemical plants) wishing to
expand their knowledge and capabilities;
Process Design Engineers (refineries, oil and gas production facilities, and petrochemical plants) seeking an insight
into amine treating and sulphur recovery operational practices; and
Non-process personnel (commercial, planning, supply and trading) interested in gaining a better understanding of
the role of amine treating and sulphur recovery units in the petroleum refining industry
Registration will begin at 0830hr, with class commencing promptly at 0900hr and end no later than 1730hr daily.
All successful participants will be awarded a certificate of attendance at the end of class.

About your expert faculty: Lee Bamon
Lee Bamon is a Consultant for an International catalyst manufacturing company, with over 40 years’
experience in a wide range of chemical, refinery and petrochemical processes. He has worked for
various companies including Dow Corning, Exxon and Stone & Webster, on the commissioning of
units, including fluidised bed reactors, Cryogenic LNG plants and Ethylene Crackers. With Engelhard
(now BASF) as Technical Manager, he supervised the commissioning and troubleshooting of all the
licensed processes for the company, covering catalytic reforming, C5 and C6 isomerisation, oxidation
and hydroprocessing operations, worldwide. When he became Senior Sales Manager for the same
company, his expertise extended to include FCC catalysis. For a number of years, his work as a Consultant has been in the
FCC, catalytic Reforming areas, as well as an advisor for the Insurance Industry. Lee attended the University of Wales,
where he gained a C & G in Chemical Operations and Engineering.
