• Over 13% of young people globally are out of work
• Young people are almost three times more likely to be
unemployed than older adults.
• Over 44% of the Tanzanian population is under the age of 15
• 700,000 young people enter the Tanzanian labour market
each year, but with youth unemployment rates at over 13%

employment and market opportunities.
Technology and the digital economy are shaping how we work,
where we work, and the skills we need to work. This creates an
opportunity and a threat. VSO aims to maximise this opportunity
so that the most poor and marginalised can access decent work
and no one is left behind.

ENTERPRISE AND JOB CREATION
VSO supports small and medium
enterprises (SMEs) to grow. This
approach promotes inclusive business
development that generates decent
employment opportunities for poor
and marginalised communities.
We work with local partners, government and volunteers to
offer Business Development Services to help entrepreneurs
move their businesses into the formal economy.

LAKE ZONE YOUTH EMPOWERMENT PROJECT (LZYE)
Lake Zone Youth Empowerment Project (LZYE)
The LZYE project is helping the most marginalised young people aged 16-25 in
northern Tanzania to access employment opportunities.
The project will:
• Support 3000 young people to become aware of the career opportunities
• Train 400 young people in vocational and entrepreneurship skills
• Deliver outreach and apprenticeship programmes
• Influence changes in gendered social norms, reducing levels of gender-
based violence and teenage pregnancies
• Establish 80 income generating groups and assist them with start-up kits
to help establish small businesses

A HIGHLIGHT FOR GEORGE WAS MEETING INTERNATIONAL VSO VOLUNTEERS
WHO WORKED IN MALAYSIA IN THE 60’S AND 80’S
Guy Shirra Sanderson volunteered in
the 60’s as a Teacher in Miri, Sarawak
Borneo, Malaysia.
Gordon is a current volunteer for the T-LED
project in Mtwara, and former volunteer in
the Kuching, Sarawak Borneo, Malaysia in
the 80’s.

Mobilising youth during an ICS community action day in Mbeya: community
members were asked to come up with a song to raise awareness of climate
change

A youth-led network made up of ICS returned volunteers committed to
unlocking the potential of young people in Tanzania as agents for change.
NYEN Tanzania:
• Design and deliver youth-led activities that benefit the community
• Build the skills of young people to enable innovative youth-led
development activities that contribute to employability skills
• Empower young people to participate in decision making processes,
increase youth voice in community development planning
• Develop partnerships with other organisations and identify opportunities
locally, including potential local funding options
NATIONAL YOUTH ENGAGEMENT NETWORK (NYEN)

• NYEN operates in six countries - Tanzania, Nepal, Bangladesh, India,
Zambia and Ghana
• Growing network of 5000 in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar
covering six regions zone northern, southern, central, lake zone, costal and
Zanzibar
• Over 400 national youth in Tanzania have been trained by NYEN to help
them move from job seeking to become job creators
• NYEN members participated in different activities reaching over 1000
primary actors

TANZANIA LOCAL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT
PROJECT (T-LED)
T-LED is a five-year project (April 2015-March 2020), funded by Global Affairs Canada
(GAC) that:
• Supports predominantly female led SMEs to overcome business barriers, and access
growth-oriented markets
• Provides critical business resources to local SMEs to increase sustainable
employment for women and men
• Improves the delivery of market driven and gender responsive business
development and financial services to SMEs
• Will create 2,500 new jobs and increase the income of 1,300 SMEs
