This document discusses social capital and its importance for quality of life. Social capital enhances human capital and is increased when people have opportunities to interact socially, such as at a coffee shop, park, or church. However, social capital is ignored in traditional economic metrics. The document advocates for multi-dimensional impact accounting that incorporates social capital and other factors like human, man-built, and natural capital. It also discusses how social capital relates to business, place, community, and neighborhoods.

TRUE VALUE ACCOUNTING
3. SOCIAL CAPITAL has a big role in the quality
of life of any person and their family, but is
totally ignored in the money metrics of
economic progress and performance data.
This has to change … be changed!

6. PEOPLE are SOCIAL
SOCIAL CAPITAL is enhanced when PEOPLE
have the opportunity to meet each other, to
congregate and to interact. At the same time
this improves personal HUMAN CAPITAL.
This can be at a coffee shop, on a park bench,
in a restaurant or in Church (or other religious
setting).
It can also happen in a business setting.
MULTI DIMENSION IMPACT ACCOUNTING
7. SOCIAL CAPITAL and BUSINESS
Business provides products (goods and
services that people need.
Business provides jobs that people need. With
jobs, people have money and they can then
buy the things they need.
Business can also enhance local facilities
needed by the community by pro-good
philanthropy, but also by the taxes that are paid
to government.
MULTI DIMENSION IMPACT ACCOUNTING
8. SOCIAL CAPITAL and PLACE
When PLACE enables social interaction there is a
good impact on SOCIAL CAPITAL.
A PLACE has to have the physical characteristics that
make SOCIAL work.
In a healthy … flourishing … PLACE, what is good for
SOCIETY is also good for PLACE and vice versa.
MULTI DIMENSION IMPACT ACCOUNTING
9. COMMUNITY or NEIGHBORHOOD
The way a community or a neighborhood has been
built determines to some extent how well it works to
enhance SOCIAL CAPITAL.
Social interaction that is physical (rather than virtual)
satisfies human needs and improves Quality of Life.
Place to meet … the 'pub', the coffee shop, the
barber's shop, church, are all positive for building
social capital.
