Wat gaan we vertellen?
Vorige week: Luisa won de ‘vrienden van cobbenhage’prijs voor haar bachelor thesis (5000 euro)

Een man schept op over het aantal hertjes dat hij heeft geregeld, een vrouw verzwijgt bedpartners. In haar bachelorscriptie zoekt Luisa Decker (Sociologie) naar verklaringen voor deze verschillende houdingen ten opzichte van casual seks.
In haar scriptie zoekt Decker naar mogelijke verklaringen voor de verschillende houdingen ten opzichte van casual seks. Daarvoor stelde ze een vragenlijst op die is beantwoord door 300 respondenten in de leeftijd van 17 tot 35 jaar.
De eerste mogelijke verklaring is social learning, er zou een zogenaamde dubbele standaard worden aangeleerd. Van mannen wordt verwacht dat zij veel seks hebben en vrouwen moeten terughoudend zijn omdat ze anders door de samenleving worden gestraft.
De samenleving bepaalt met wie je seks hebt. Zeker studenten zijn erg bezig met wat anderen over ze denken en hoe dat het leven beïnvloedt.
Deze niet behandelen, maar laten zien en vertellen over eigen onderzoek
Wetenschap: geen mening maar feiten
Wat is het probleem, hoe groot, voor wie/welke groepen, wat zijn de oorzaken en gevolgen?
Niet altijd makkelijk te achterhalen, verder denken dan common-sense.
Je leert daarom bij sociologie: goede vragen stellen, kritisch nadenken, argumenteren, goed onderzoek (kwalitatief + kwantitatief) doen en beoordelen, communiceren (teksten schrijven en presenteren). Allemaal vaardigheden die hun waarde hebben op de arbeidsmarkt!

Aantal contact uren per week voor eerstejaars: Tilburg University stelt min 12 uur per week, maar bij ons is dat 18-20 uur per week
Grootstedelijke vraagstukken: Wat zijn de belangrijkste sociale vraagstukken in grote steden in Nederland en West-Europa? En wat zijn de lokale, stedelijke gevolgen van globale veranderingen?
Globale veranderingen zoals globalisering, individualisering, migratie en vergrijzing zijn voelbaar op een lokaal niveau en moeten ook op dat niveau worden aangepakt. De stad wordt daarbij vaak als brandpunt van maatschappelijke vernieuwing en verandering gezien.

In deze Nederlandstalige major kijk je op twee manieren naar grote steden. Aan de ene kant leer je meer over de schaduwzijden van stedelijke verandering, zoals werkloosheid, overlast en criminaliteit, en de sociale gevolgen van verhoogde etnische en culturele diversiteit. Aan de andere kant verdiep je je in de kansen en mogelijkheden die een grote stad biedt op het vlak van innovatie, creativiteit, ontmoeting, consumptie en vernieuwing.

Naast hedendaagse theorieën over stad en buurt, focus je op centrale thema’s zoals verhoogde diversiteit, sociale ongelijkheid, armoede, leefbaarheid en gezondheid in stedelijke buurten. Bovendien besteed je in deze major aandacht aan de mogelijkheden en beperkingen van sociaal en stedelijk beleid.

Culture in comparative perspective:
How do people think about the world around them? And how does this translate to political, religious/spiritual and moral world-views? This major is about culture in an international, comparative context. You will learn why people’s world-views differ and how these world-views are embedded in social networks and structures.

You will also focus on the role of the internet and social media in forming world-views. For example, to what extent do people live in a 'bubble' and to what degree does this 'bubble' create interaction between world-views and new media?

Besides explanations for cultural differences between people, you study the consequences. The way in which people view and interpret the world around them, for example, defines and legitimizes the way they shape their identity and choose their lifestyle. Nationalism, feelings of public unease, belief in conspiracy theories, and marital preferences are also partly defined by world-views.

Social risks in a changing world
What are the social consequences of globalization? And what does this mean for social risks such as poverty and inequality? Since the twentieth century, we have dealt with various risks associated with welfare. Think, for example, of the fulfilment of basic needs, eliminating poverty, and realizing life chances. These risks were socially and collectively covered by the industrialized nation-states in the form of the modern welfare state.

Since the 1970s, however, the modern welfare state has come under pressure from increasing globalization. Old social risks, such as retirement, illness and unemployment, change, whereas new social risks, such as the working poor, low literacy, and the combined pressure of work and family life, appear.

In this major, you will study the transformations of social risks by focusing on economic, social and political globalization. Economic globalization is related to the integration of national economies in ‘global capital', the rise of multinationals, and the power of the financial world. Political globalization is reflected in the rise of transnational cooperation, such as in the European Union. Social globalization is about global migration and urbanization, and is linked, for example, to urban super-diversity and to transnational elites and the super-rich.

Ook bij de Engelstalige sessie interessant om te benoemen, omdat er grotendeels Nederlandstalige bezoekers aanwezig zijn en Sociologie ook een optie is.
Twee talen en 3 specialisaties al genoemd, maar dit is uniek in Nederland

Kleinschaligheid; docenten kennen je, je bent onderdeel van een kleine klas met een mentor. Een van de docenten wordt ook je persoonlijke tutor (begeleider) waarmee je je studievoortgang bespreekt, maar ook je interesses en ambities (eerste jaar: vier gesprekken) – we helpen je bij keuzeprocessen (bv voor specialisaties, minor/stage/buitenland). Met je klas heb je ook een aantal bijeenkomsten per jaar: reflectie en evaluatie studie, studievaardigheden opdoen, arbeidsmarktorientatie (= PASS, program for academic Study Success)

Goede rendementen (70-80%; verschilt wel per jaar door kleine cohorten)
Tevreden studenten: Opleidings scoort hoog in Nationale Studentenenquete (gemiddelde tevredenheid met opleiding is 4 op een schaal van 1 tot 5).

De belangrijkste punten uit het nieuwe onderwijsprofiel zijn:
- Aandacht voor zelfkennis en reflectie: op de maatschappij, op jezelf, je rol in de samenleving, persoonlijke wensen/behoeften tbv je studie- en werkloopbaan.
- Skills zijn prominent in het curriculum (zowel academische skills als arbeidsmarktoriëntatie) en zijn geïntegreerd in het onderwijs.
- Begeleiding van de studenten wordt belangrijker: vaste begeleidingsteams
- Kleinschaligheid: je maakt deel uit van een Class (40 studenten met een begeleidingsteam )
- Een stage gaat deel uitmaken van elke opleiding. Je krijgt er ook studiepunten voor.

Toelichting Kennis, Kunde, Karakter
Het onderwijsprofiel van Tilburg University is uniek in Nederland en rust op drie pijlers. In tilburg zetten we namelijk in op kennis, kunde én karakter. Onze studenten zullen steeds meer beoordeeld worden op de combinatie van deze drie. Het hebben van wetenschappelijke kennis om complexe problemen op te lossen zal altijd zeer gewaardeerd blijven, maar steeds belangrijker worden eigenschappen als ‘kritisch denken’, ‘creativiteit’ en ‘emotionele intelligentie’.

De organisaties waarvoor je komt te werken zijn bijvoorbeeld gemeentes, provincies, onderzoeksbureaus, onderwijsinstellingen, culturele instellingen, de journalistiek, woningbouwverenigingen, de gezondheidszorg en nog veel meer. Met aanvullende cursussen vakdidactiek en een stage kun je je ook kwalificeren als 1e-graads leraar maatschappijleer.
Sociologen vinden gemakkelijk werk (uit recent alumni-onderzoek blijkt dat meer dan de helft van de afgestudeerde sociologiestudenten binnen twee maanden na afstuderen een baan vindt).
Ze hebben een brede kennis van maatschappelijke problemen en onderzoeksmethoden. Ze zijn in staat een substantiële bijdrage te leveren aan het oplossen van actuele maatschappelijke problemen.
Als afgestudeerde socioloog ben je in staat zelfstandig sociale problemen te analyseren en oplossingen te bedenken. Je bent op de hoogte van allerlei maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen en daardoor ben je zeer breed inzetbaar en kun je bij veel verschillende organisaties aan de slag.
