1. CV. Pernille Staal Køhler
Education:
2015 – MSc., Chemical and biochemical engineering, DTU
2013 – BSc. Eng., Chemistry and bioteknologi, DTU
2011 – Internship at Xellia pharmaceuticals
Professional interests and expertise:
I am interested mostly in process development and optimization. It motivates me
to solve problems and acquire new knowledge. Some of my strongest expertises
are in practical work to solve specific problems. I like tasks where to think
"outside the box" is needed to find the best solution.
During my education I have worked with at least, seven pilot-scale plants
including fermentation, spray drying and ultrafiltration. Throughout my time at
DTU, I have had eight classes dealing with process design and unit operations
used in both chemistry and biotechnology. Additionally, I had classes in GMP,
reactor/fermenter design, membrane technology, physical chemistry,
thermodynamics, reaction engineering, material science and modeling of
reactions with and without a catalyst, and design of whole production
processes.
Furthermore, I have established experience with simulation program ProII,
programming, simulation and solution of differential equations in MATLAB and
thermodynamics of ICAS.
Projects in industry:
2015 – Master thesis at Chr-Hansen.
This project dealt with optimization of a fermentation process in order to
increase the stability of lactic acid bacteria, while still maintaining an
economical and time wise feasible process. Through this project, I got a good
insight into the workings of a development where the majority of the work is
to be applied to production as soon as possible.
During this project, I performed all fermentations and stability tests
independently, which has given me good experience with the practical aspects
of fermentation.
2012 – Graduate project at Carlsberg Research Center.
This project represented the first step in the development of a new product.
It has provided a unique insight into the considerations and decisions you have
to go through in a development process.
2011 – Internship in production at Xellia Pharmaceuticals.
This project dealt with optimization of the production of antibiotic (API),
produced by fermentation. The optimization was done by collecting a large
amount of data for using statistical analysis to find the conditions at which the
highest yield was obtained. In addition, a considerable part of the focus was
the occasionally increased viscosity of the fermentation broth. In this context,
a standard for measuring the viscosity was developed. This was 100%
independent work. Because my supervisor was head of production, I had the
unique opportunity to learn about management of production.
Other work experience:
2007 - 2009 – Teaching assistant in kindergarten.
The job as a teaching assistant was very rewarding both personally and in terms
of experience working with different types of people. In this job, I was given
many opportunities to develop my ability to read and understand the many
personalities. An experience I often avail myself of in teamwork.

Something about me:
In working with problem solving and in
my spare time I am enterprising.
I enjoy and everyday life with many
different projects.
I am very curious; therefore, I strive to
learn something every day.
I am most often regarded as a happy,
open and forthcoming person.
