2. 1.1. Introduction “I’m not only a designer, I’m much more ….” Turning ideas into products 2 My career has developed in the ceramic industry, specializing in the design and creation of prototypes, models and molds for the industrial products manufacture, adapted to the processes and characteristics of each manufacturer.

3. 1.2. Brief biography Artistically trained at Fine Arts School, I complemented my training as modeler and product developer at porcelain industry. In 1980, I created my own studio dedicated to the design, modeling and construction of molds for ceramic industry. Awarded as the Best International Designer by Expohogar 1990 3 As a result of my large experience in the modeling using traditional systems and my keen interest in computer applications in the ceramic field, I developed an innovative project to implement (CAD-CAM-CAE)* system . Moreover, I promoted the introduction of technologies of rapid prototyping: 3D Printing and stereo lithography, to the development of porcelain products of haute cuisine within montgatina® company. * CAD (Computer Aided Design) / CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) / CAE (Computer Aided Engineering)

4. 1.3. CAD/CAM/CAE systems in the design and development process. Why CAD/CAM/CAE systems? *Current market demands force the manufacturer to offer higher quality and innovation at lower cost, while having less time and less total resources for development. * To compete in this market, manufacturers need to streamline their design and development using the quality and innovation concepts to all stages of the project from its inception. The highest quality attainable by a product is defined by its own process of creation. The solution is to use CAD/CAM/CAE tools, during the process of creating and developing new products. These systems allow predict, through virtual prototyping, potential problems in the early stages development of new products, whole or in part by reducing the number of real prototypes and therefore its cost. 4

5. 1.4. Expert knowledge of the trade craft 5 The expert knowledge of the trade craft in combination with the application of modern technologies in computer numerical control and rapid prototyping, allow the most appropriate choice to the characteristics and needs of each manufacturer. This capability is extremely important because it can fall into the mistake of thinking that any result achieved by the combination of software and advanced hardware will be correct and error-free, regardless of skill and knowledge of the user. The concurrent engineering methodology* attempts to reduce the time to market anticipating potential problems in the design phase, therefore, the CAE tools, together with other computer aided systems like CAD and CAM, are a cornerstone for this reduction. *Concurrent engineering is a work methodology based on the parallelization of tasks. It refers to an approach used in product development in which functions of design engineering, manufacturing engineering and other functions are integrated to reduce the elapsed time required to bring a new product to the market.

Concurrent engineering objectives Overall objectives to be achieved by implementing a concurrent engineering: Shorten the product development time Increase productivity Increase flexibility Better use of resources High quality product Cost reduction of product development Integrate the company departments Ensure compliance with the requirements and customer expectations 6 These objectives are achievable through a system of work where different design and engineering activities, in the process of product development and production, are integrated and performed in parallel instead of sequentially.

12. 12 2.5 Advanced Technical Ceramics Research Projects: Design and development of knee advanced technical ceramic implants using CAD/CAM technology. Design, development and fabrication of resins molds to obtain knee high-tech ceramic implants within Pressure Casting Process. Implementation of 3D Printing methodology, a new Rapid manufacturing Process, to obtain porcelain dinnerware and advanced technical ceramics for jewelry and medical applications (hip, knee and dental) . Modeling of advanced technical ceramic products for presentation as virtual projects to clients, project partners and European Community Programs Advisors.

13. 13 2.6 Virtual Projects Their use result in a multidisciplinary and global approach of the whole project, and involving all related parties (designer, engineer, moulds and tools production builder, manufacturer, sales department, marketing, customer ...) Moreover, they offer the advantage of showing the product and analyze the market before making expensive investments in its development. The result is a product with a high standard of quality and optimized design, fully managed to costumer needs.
