3. Why Drill?
• We Need Oil & Gas:
• The U.S. consumed 6.87 billion barrels of oil and
24.38 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2011.
• Oil and gas are used for thousands of items other than
fueling our vehicles and heating our homes.
• Pesticides, ballet tights, shoes, earrings, telephones,
computers, footballs, headphones, aspirin, lipstick and more!
• Without investment in oil and gas, our society could not
function.

4. Drilling 101
• Producers such as Penneco invest in the latest technologies and
practices to safely find and bring crude oil and natural gas from
sandstone and shale formations that are sometimes thousands of
feet below the surface.
• The drilling and completion
process can last up to six
months depending on the
type of well. Afterward, the
site is reclaimed and only a
small amount of production
equipment remains to bring
oil or gas to the surface for
many years.

5. Shale and Horizontal Drilling
• Shale formations such as the Marcellus, the Utica and the
Bakken promise to make America energy-independent within
a decade or two.
• Producing oil and gas from these formations requires a larger
investment, but Penneco and its energy industry partners
understand the importance of shale to our nation and are
readily meeting the challenge.
