This document discusses providing clean water solutions to rural communities in Africa. It summarizes the UN's Millennium Development Goals of improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Currently, over 40% of people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to improved water sources. The SkyHydrant water purification system is presented as an affordable solution, using microfiltration and chlorine to produce potable water from local sources with minimal infrastructure. Recent projects have installed SkyHydrants in refugee camps in Uganda to provide clean drinking water for thousands of people daily. Contact information is provided for organizations working to install more SkyHydrants in several African countries to improve access to safe water.
2. “The human right to water entitles everyone to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic uses”General Comment No. 15 (2002): The Right to Water.
3. UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) By including water supply, sanitation and hygiene in the MDG’s, the world community has acknowledged the importance of their promotion as development interventions and has set a series of goals and targets. Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Target 9: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and program and reverse the loss of environmental resources. Target 10: Halve by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Integrate sanitation into water resources management strategies.
7. "Water and Sanitation is one of the primary drivers of public health. I often refer to it as “Health 101”, which means that once we can secure access to clean water and to adequate sanitation facilities for all people, irrespective of the difference in their living conditions, a huge battle against all kinds of diseases will be won." Dr LEE Jong-wook, Director-General, World Health Organization.
9. The SkyHydrant water purification unit is intended for affordable community water supply or disaster relief applications for production of potable water. It operates under as little as one 300 mm of gravity head and without the need for an electrical power supply. The units can be a single stand alone installation or manifolded together for higher capacity The SkyHydrant process combines microfiltration for primary disinfection and particulate removal with chlorine disinfection to produce a safe supply of water from the majority of fresh surface and ground waters. The system membrane sub-module is robust, cleanable and long lasting. All operating and membrane cleaning functions are simple and manual.
10. Recently, Vision Africa Australia donated four SkyHydrants for use in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Western Uganda. Pictured here are local contractors and GTZ water engineer installing and testing the water quality after the raw water has filtered through a SkyHydrant. Microbiology test came back all clear to confirm that filtered water was now safe for human consumption.
11. THE DIFFERENCE IS CLEAR! Raw source water from Lake Nakivale is on the left and clean SkyHydrant filtered water is on the right.
12. Global 2000(2010) International in partnership with Vision Africa Australia is installing 200 SkyHydrants in Africa by the end of 2009 which will provide uninterrupted access to clean and safe drinking water to more than 200,000 people living in rural areas of Uganda, South Sudan, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
