LIFE INSURANCE
General insurance policies, including automobile and homeowners
policies, provide payments depending on the loss from a particular
financial event. General insurance typically comprises any insurance
that is not determined to be life insurance.

• Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India
(IRDAI) is the controlling and regulatory apex body in the
country for insurance sector.
•Headquartered in Hyderabad.
•It was constituted as a body to regulate and develop the
insurance industry in 1999 and was incorporated as a statutory
body in April, 2000.
•The key objective of IRDAI is promotion of competition to
satisfy customer choice with lower premiums. The IRDA opened
up market in August 2000.

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) was formed in
September 1956 by the Act of Parliament, LIC Act 1956 with a
contribution of Rs. 50 million.
Then Finance Minister Mr. C. D. Deshmukh while piloting the
bill for nationalization outlined the objectives of LIC thus:-
• To conduct the business with utmost economy with spirit of
trusteeship.
• To invest the funds for obtaining maximum yield for policy
holders consistent with safety of capital.
• To render prompt and efficient service to policy holders
thereby making Insurance widely popular.

• An endowment policy is essentially a life insurance policy which,
apart from covering the life of the insured, helps the policyholder
save regularly over a specific period of time so that he/she is able to

survives the policy term.

• Cargo insurance is the sub-branch of marine insurance, though

properties (such as container terminals, oil platforms etc).

(H&M).
