4. Work Experience
A
s a creative person who at a young age had a desire to
work and become independent, at the tender age of 16
I decided to look for work that would fulfil my creative
desires and also provide me the kind of livelihood that I wanted.
As someone with no technical experience then, I joined Stu-
dio Finelines in 2006 to learn and imbibe as much knowledge
as I could about the world of design and animation. After much
self-introspection and exploration, I found myself satisfied with
where I started and thus began my journey as a designer, anima-
tor and visual artist.

5. Working Style
A
n individual and his
work is as good as his
way of working.
I believe in a philosophy
of work ethics and style that
stems from a fine balance
between ease and perfection.
The initial step of my working
is understanding the require-
ment of a perspective client.
It is here, that I prefer to
meet with the client rather
than discuss things on the
phone. It might sound a bit
restrictive, but emotions and
meaning conveyed in a face-
to-face meeting are far more
meaningful and beneficial to
not only the work I will do, but
also to my growth as a profes-
sional.
Meeting with different
kinds of individuals and pro-
fessionals helps me develop
my soft skills and thus contrib-
utes towards the growth of
my personality in a way that
will ultimately also provide my
work with intellectual fodder.
A part of my work style that
I am extremely proud of is an
eye for detail, along with a
desire to learn from all that is
around me.
When it comes to logo
designing, I have always un-
derstood the type of industry
a client is involved in so that
the logo is able to radiate the
core focus of the venture as
I believe it is important for
an individual to connect with
a venture immediately after
hearing its name and seeing
its logo.
I hope to
thus work in
an environ-
ment that is
communi-
cative and
positive.

D
esigning logos has always been an important part of my
career and can also be said to be my favourite part of work
as a designer and graphic artist. Seen here, is a small part
of work that shows my design philosphy. As mentioned earlier, I
try to understand the work a client is involved in so that I can in-
corporate it into the logo (the logo for Manocha Earth Movers &
Contractors best emphasises this - third logo in the third column
on the adjacent page).
An ability that I am particularly proud of is getting the right
results in the first attempt. I always take time to complete an
assignment, but that isn’t because I am laid back, but it’s because
I give it my best effort and present the client with options that
require only an occasional minor tweak and no actual changes.
I also specialise in collateral creation like stationery, visiting
cards, packaging materials, posters, banners, etc. based on the
logo created or provided.

7. Comics
M
y first true test of creativity
and skill perhaps came when
I stumbled upon the opportu-
nity to become involved in the designing
of comic books - it helped me hone my
skill as a designer and graphic artist as I
was involved in the end-to-end process
of creating various comic books.
The first assignment, a comic book
series on the Sikh Gurus and other
individuals of importance and wor-
ship throughout sikh history is where I
learned a lot and was also involved a lot.
Here, I would design the cover of the
comic, set the layout of the comic (i.e.,
making the file print-ready - setting the
bleed area and separating it from the
print area), caption the various dia-
logues in dialogue boxes and all other
things that are involved in the creation
of a comic book from a design perspec-
tive. This comic book series is now pub-
lished in six different languages namely,
Hindi, Punjabi, English, Dutch, Spanish
and Basa. Currently, I am also working
on a series on the folk tales of Punjab,
and 30 comics on sikh history are in que
for printing and distribution.

Magazine Designs
M
y journey in the world of magazines began with Urban
Mélange - a lifestyle magazine based out of Chandigarh,
with a focus on Punjab, Haryana and the Delhi region.
Over a period spanning nine months, I designed cover pages and
advertisements for the magazines, along with the stories that
were to be published in the magazine. Working with a team, I
learned the ways of deadline-oriented work as every month, es-
pecially towards the end became a demanding period.
I
n the recent past, a majority of my work has been with maga-
zines. La Blend, a regional magazine that focuses on incredible
content and great visuals is a publication that I was involved in
from the conceptualisation stage. Over a period of almost a year, I
have worked on cover pages, layout design, page setting and even
advertising design for the magazine. I have also contributed to
the content of the magazine by suggesting ideas to the Editorial
team and have also written articles for the magazine.
9. Flash Games
A
s I continued to
explore my learning
curve, I came across
an employer who allocated
me into the Flash animation
department of his company.
The purpose of my work
was to sit with a coder and
design flash video games.
While I was actually seeking
work that I was comfortable
with, I decided to join the
company as it allowed me
to learn the necessary soft-
wares on the job and later I
was also allowed to continue
with work that I was already
well versed with.
Over the course of the
two year period that I was
employed there, I designed
the animation for some
twenty-five games. In the
process, I also learned to
code the animation - creat-
ing button functions and the
likes.

10. A
s an animator, the true test of my
skill and knowledge came when I
joined the artistry team as a free-
lancer with various industry individuals
that I had come to know over the course
of my career.
Here again, I learnt on the job as this
type of work was not something I had
done before. While the technical skill
was something I had knowledge of, it’s
practical implementation and usage was
an area that I had not yet explored.
The work, that of a clean-up artist
and an inbetween artist involved the
creation of the final animated image and
the creation of the image of each frame
that was played on screen, respectively.
Le Congres, one of the movies that
I worked on is a Cannes Film Festival
selection that starred Hollywood actress
Robin Wright along with Paul Giamatti
and Jon Hamm.
Maharaja: The Story of Ranjit Singh,
another film I worked on is a project
very close to my heart as it was a do-
mestic project that was very well appre-
ciated and commended.

11. Photography
P
hotography is a part
of my work that began
as a hobby and even
today, I still consider it to be
a hobby. While it has provid-
ed towards my livelihood on
numerous occasions, I still
believe that I have a long way
to go before I consider myself
as a professional photogra-
pher.
Today, I like to call myself
an amateur who loves to
shoot images and videos,
while learning in the process.
I have been provided with
opportunities to work for
products, still life, portfolios,
food photography and even
advertisements.
While working for the
magazines, there were nu-
merous occasions where I
clicked images of those that
were featured in the articles
that were to be published in
the magazines.
