Automated Meter reading systems are a invaluable technological advancement that can lead to
a better standard of living, owing to the fact that metering has become a part and parcel of our
mundane lives.
It solves many issues of the traditional meter reading system like need for human resources, lack
of efficiency and accuracy in meter reading, delayed work, unavailability of customer during
metering visit by employee, etc. Moreover it is more economical and helps to save energy in a
more efficient and effective way. Furthermore it has a very notable advantage of having the
ability to predict the energy demands of the future, starting from every household to the entire
planet.
Automated meter reading systems have been implemented using many different technologies
like GSM, ZigBee, PLC, D-SCADA, WiMAX and Hybrid Technologies that comprises of a mixture
of the above.
This seminar paper describes the working models, strengths and weaknesses of each technology
by considering various factors like feasibility, cost, reliability, efficiency, and maintenance and
user experience. This paper not only explains the existing Energy Metering systems but also
provides an abstract view of developing the most optimal Automated Meter Reading system.

4. COMPONENTS USED IN PROJECT
• Energy Meter
• Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM)
• Arduino
• Short Message Services (SMS)
• RealTime
• Load Bench
6. CIRCUIT DIAGRAM EXPLAINATION
• ENERGY METER
An energy or electric meter is a device that measures the amount of electrical energy consumed by a residence,
business, or an electrically-powered device. Electric meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common
one being the kilowatt hour.
• Control Section
Arduino UNO is used for controlling whole the process of this visitor counter project. The out puts comparators are
connected to digital pins of Arduino
• Display Section
Display section contains a 16*2 LCD . This section will display the counted number of people and light status when no one
will in the room.
• Relay Driver Section
Relay driver section consist a BC547 transistor and 5volt relay for controlling the load . Arduino sends commands to this
relay driver transistor and then light bulb ( load ) will turn on/off accordingly .
7. Software requirements
Arduino Software
Before starting the coding, following libraries are included in Arduino IDE.
• EMON Library
• RTC Library
• Liquid Crystal Library
• EMON Library
This Arduino library is for measuring Current and Power Factor values accurately.
• RTC Library
This library is for Real Time Clock Module DS3231 which handles current date and time. It is necessary for energy
calculations.
• Liquid Crystal Library
Arduino LCD library is for displaying the results on LCD. This library supports the commands which are useful in
displaying results on LCD.
9. RESULT
• energy meter monitoring system by using
Arduino UNO as microcontroller and GSM
module as interface with the users in the purpose
of the flexibility of the customers to monitor their
current bill or power consumptions usage from
anywhere with their mobile phones. The results
showed that the system works successfully.
Future research is controlling the energy meter,
meaning instead of just monitoring the meter,
usage, power consumption, controlling them will
be one step further, so that the users can even
control their bill, usage, power consumptions by
themselves remotely from their mobile phones.
10. ADVANTAGES
Collects meter readings electronically.
Reduce the utilities to the customers and the cost of delivering utilities to the utility providers.
By this project the government gets much profit by receiving the tax and bill on time, by this we can
help government in the development of our State, & Country.
The abstract of rural classification provides opportunities for new and more efficient metering
technologies.
Precise consumption information
Clear and accurate billing
Better and faster customer service
12. APPLICATION
Energy meters are widely used in domestic areas for the measurement of electric
power consumed by the customers and these energy meters are commonly used in
industrial sector for controlling the electric power of various machinery according to
its reading and for measurement of electric power.
Auto disconnect feature.
Electricity departments.
Household Energy meter monitoring.
Railway electrical systems.
Industrial Energy remote monitoring
13. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
The concept can further be extended by integrating a RFID smart card where
in each card is provided to automatically recharge the amount and send the
same information via GSM module. To the respective phone number stored.
