Are you a Consultant, Coach, or Service Provider?
If you truly want to stand out in the service based industry, you need to become a trusted adviser. This free report highlights 10 effective ways you can use to thrive as a trusted adviser, and grow your business.
2. Introduction
There’s one common thing that makes service providers (consultants, coaches, etc) end up
being undervalued and underpaid; that thing is… DOUBT!
Doubt that you are not good enough; that no one will listen to you, or pay a higher fee for
your services.
Doubt will always creep in unannounced, and rake havoc in your mind if you allow it. When it
does that, you’ll start believing that you don’t deserve…
• To build a thriving service business
• To attract high quality clients
• To command premium pricing for your services
• To have time freedom to spend with loved ones
• To go on vacation whenever you want
• To be happy
If that describes where you are currently, and you feel like all your efforts in growing a
successful service business is futile, then this is just what you need. Read on…
3. Start With The Truth
It’s often said that truth is bitter, the reason it is so is because it puts you on
check, and helps you avoid living a life of constant denial, while pretending
everything is moving on well.
To become to Trusted Adviser, you must learn to be true to yourself and your
clients. There is nothing wrong in admitting that you do not know certain things
(this is not weakness, but maturity). People are more inclined to do business with
people who have integrity.
Some so called experts would say you have to “fake it to make it”, but what they
fail to point out is how long you can carry on doing that. It’s best to look at things
long term, in order to see what is at stake if you tow that direction.
What are you denying? Deal with that and let yourself progress (find closure).

4. Work More On Your Strengths
Avoid getting caught up with what you do not know how to do, and focus on
consistently refining (or developing) what you already know how to do.
Let’s say you are good at writing, but suck at design; you don’t need to take a
crash course on design, just because you can’t afford to pay someone else to do it
or feel it’s necessary to add it as a skill. Unless you are looking for a job, then I’d
say go for it; but if you are building a business, then you need to spend most of
your time doing things that come naturally to you, and also in helping your clients
succeed.
To get yourself off the hook, accept that you have weaknesses in certain areas,
and seek help from a reliable source (coach, mentor, etc). A good mentor/coach
will spend time to help you focus on what you are good at, and show you how to
delegate some of the work to others.

5. Avoid The Band Wagon
Are you often swayed by “shinny objects”? It’s easy to allow yourself to join the
herd, especially if you are struggling in your business.
There is nothing wrong in looking at what others are doing, in order to find out
what works, and see how that can fit into your business. But where most people
get it wrong is doing the exact same thing as the other person.
The service based industry is very competitive, and most of the time, prospects
find it hard to distinguish which consultant/coach is offering the best value,
because they all sound the same. When this happens, the prospect is forced to do
price comparison.
Trust me, you don’t want to be in that league. You need to learn to stand out in
everything you do within your business and when dealing with clients.

6. Take Massive Action…
Even when it’s going to make you uncomfortable. The journey to success does not
understand the concept of “comfort.” Don’t wait for inspiration, do it now! The
more you wait, the more you will lose in the end.
The worst enemy of business is procrastination, and when you are prone to this,
you will keep spinning the hamster wheel of failure.
When you take action, regardless of what the results will be, you are building
confidence in your work. It’s always best to put things out there and get the
necessary feedback that will help you improve, rather than wait for the “perfect
time” (it doesn’t exist).
Action takers are those who are not afraid of failure, and are commonly
successful, because they are always going against the norm. In business, you can’t
play it “safe” and win. Be a go getter!

7. Be Specific
When you allow yourself to jump from one thing to the other, you will end up
having no solid foundation. You need to draw out a plan of what you need to do
to get to your desired destination.
When you are trying to grow your business, there are things (issues, ideas,
concerns, etc) that will creep in. This can be distracting, and when you give them
undue attention, you will end up confusing yourself.
What do you want to achieve in your business? Who exactly are you meant to
serve? What problems does he/she have that you are confident you can help
him/her solve?
Write out answers to these questions and many other questions that come to
mind, and see if what you are doing now is still in line with your business goals. If
not, then yon need to go back to the drawing board. Stay on track!

8. Choose Your Associates Wisely
I reckon you’ve already heard about the importance of surrounding yourself with
people who are where you want to be, and will support you on your journey. This
should be ingrained in your mind always.
If you allow the negative things people say detect who you are, then your
confidence level is bound to drop. If this happens, you are going to find it difficult
to get things done as you should. It’s best to get away from such people and spend
time with people who will help mold you for success.
Sometimes people around you mean well, but their approach is often toxic, and
you have to build a resistance to any communication that will put you down.
Guard your mind and ensure you are taking advice from people who see the
potential in you, and are willing to add value to you by way of advice, mentoring
and/or coaching.

9. Read Like There’s No Tomorrow
How often do you read? It’s important to know that educating yourself does not
necessary mean heading off to college to get a degree. Education is broader than
the 4 walls of a school.
What books, blogs, and manuals are you reading? Are they helping you improve as
a person and also in building your business? Who are your influencers? What
resources do they have that you can access in order to develop yourself more and
more?
The more you give yourself to reading quality content daily, the more confident
you will become on subjects that pertain to your business. You will be able to
tackle objections raised by prospects, and also understand what to do to help your
clients.
Reading should be a daily habit. When you develop your knowledge, you’re also
building your confidence on the subject.
7
10. Listen To Criticisms…
In order to progress with building your confidence, you also need some form of
opposition (in other words, a different perspective). Weigh in on them and filter
out what you need and discard what you don’t need.
Criticisms are not always negative; they are necessary ingredients for one’s
personal development. If your work is not being criticized constructively, then it
could mean it’s not that valuable to merit a critic.
A good mentor or coach will critic your work (or business) to see if you are on the
right path. If you are shying away from this, then it implies that you are not
confident in what you are doing.
Criticisms that are neither constructive nor relevant should be ignored. In some
cases, people will want to use any medium to bring you down. You have to be firm
if this happens, and stay true to your business goals.
8
11. Don’t Be Ruled By Emotions
It’s easy to become “romantic” about your work, even when there are clear
indications that you are going nowhere. There are times when you have to cut
your loses and move on.
Every step you take within your business matters, and they can make or break
you. In order to avoid being stuck, you need to study the trends within your
industry and see what needs to be adopted into your business.
The mindset of “we’ve always done it this way” is what is putting many businesses
on the path of bankruptcy. There’s no shame in letting go of the old ways of doing
things and embracing new ideas and strategies that will help you grow your
business, without overwhelm (or stress).
If you truly want to build your confidence as a Trusted Adviser, then you need to
learn to position yourself with fresh and current information, that will take your
business to the next level.
9
12. Always Be Decisive
As a Trusted Adviser, you need to always make quick decisions. If you are prone to
wavering and putting things off till a later date, you will not go far.
If you have a prospect who is clearly not going to be a good fit to work with, you
need to tell him/her the truth. It could be that he/she is not ready at that point in
time. That does not rule out empathy, but only when it’s necessary.
Decide on the value of your service and ensure you stand firm on it. If you are
afraid to charge premium price for your services, then you are not going to have a
healthy financial flow (this can affect your confidence). Be sharp and ready to
make necessary decisions.
A confused mind is often gullible and hardly takes action. Be certain of who you
are and what you want. Know when to walk away from deals that are not a good
fit, regardless if the person can afford your services or not.
