18. Qobustan is best known for being the home to
the famous rock petro glyphs and mud
volcanoes. It is also included to World
Heritage List.
19. It is estimated that 300 of the planet's
estimated 700 mud volcanoes sit
Gobustan, Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea.
Many geologists as well as locals and
international mud tourists trek to such places
as the Firuz Crater, Gobustan, Salyan and end
up happily covered in mud which is thought to
have medicinal qualities. In 2001 one mud
volcano 15 kilometers from Baku made world
headlines when it suddenly started spewing
flames 15 meters high.
20. Azykh Cave
Extensively examined by archaeologists
in the 1960s, the cave is considered to
be the site of one of the most ancient
proto-human habitations in Eurasia
, Neanderthal-style jaw bone found
here by Mammadali Huseynov in
1968 and now kept at the Academy of
Sciences in Baku is thought to be over
300,000 years old and thus one of the
oldest proto-human remains found in
this part of the world. Its discovery gave
rise to the term Azykh Man.

in the world in general and the Orient in particular. It
is somewhat similar to traditions of Caucasian and
Central Asian people but has its distinctive features. It
is remarkable by abundance of the every possible
meat, fish and vegetable dishes dressed by fragrant
greens and spices.
