Smart TV’s
By George Smith-Moore
‘Smart TV’s’ the definition.
 A Smart TV is a TV that has the ability to browse the internet, this then gives
the TV the ability to download apps and stream movies from the web.
The wireless ability to connect to the internet that a Smart TV has is usually
built in or attached using a dongle, but all Smart TV’s have an Ethernet Port.

 Key Words:
  Wireless: allows connection without wires.
Dongle: like a memory stick but it serves a purpose instead of storing
             information.
Ethernet: a wired connection to the internet, this connects to the
  router, and the TV.
Main brands.
 Like many things the Smart TV industry has the leading brands, some of
  them you may know:
 LG
 Panasonic
 Samsung
 Sony
What to look for when buying?
 As you know there are many different types of TV’s and choosing can be
hard, and now with a Smart TV you have to look for more features.
 Size
 Choose LCD,LED, or Plasma
 Edge lit LED, or Full array backlit LED
 720p, or 1080p
 2D, or 3D
 Passive 3D or Active 3D
 Smart TV or not.

  how-to-buy-a-tv/
Size?
 Size differs and the bigger the TV the bigger the image.
To work out what size is best, go and have a look at the room in which you
will be putting the TV and from there decide what size is best.
LCD
                                                Plasma
LCD or Plasma?
 Choosing between LCD and Plasma can be hard but now there is more
options such as LED. Before we go into LED lets compare LCD and Plasma.
 LCD’s give out brighter images so they work better in bright rooms (rooms
with the sun shining through; LCD’s go down into smaller sizes and they
consume less power (lower bill), they also don't ‘burn in’ so easily (when a
static image is on the screen for a long while that image will be always
visible on the screen, it is burned into it.)
 Plasma’s give a greater contrast of colours, more realistic images, richer
colours, and they have a wider viewing angle (good if your not directly in
front of the TV), the graphics are also a little better than LCD’s and give a
  more film-like experience.
LED’s?
 LED TV’s are LCD TV’s but with a different backlighting method. LED TV’s use
LED’s this allows better control over lighting and dimming, they also have a
low power consumption. There are two types of LED TV’s: Full array
  backlit, and edge lit.
 Full-Array backlit is a rival in picture quality to the plasma, they have deeper
  black levels, and richer colour
 Edge-lit LEDTV’s have minor drawbacks (not so great with bright or dark
images) but they are ultra-slim. Local dimming
                                                                       Full array LED
                                                                        backlighting
                                                                  to match
                                                                   image

                                                    LED Display
                                                       panel
720p or 1080p?
 The difference is the quality of the picture. A 720p TV can support video of
up to 1280 pixels wide and 720 pixels tall, whereas a 1080p TV can play
video of up to 1920 pixels wide and 1080 pixels tall (BEWARE A 480I IS NOT
A HIGH-DEF TV). 1080p gives out higher quality.
                                                           “p” stands for
                                                          progressive scan

 Progressive scan is: a way of
displaying the picture. 1080 lines of
                                                                         vertical resolution

                                      1920 lines of
                                  horizontal resolution
2D or 3D?
 For this it is your choice do you want to view in 3D or will you be happy in
2D; just remember that in most cases a 3D compatible TV usually gives out
good 2D quality, this will then make you spend more money, but it is worth
while if you can afford it.
Passive 3D or Active 3D
 Passive 3D I what you would see at the movies, it uses polarised glasses
that filter out the images to give a 3D effect, it is good for odd-angle
  viewing. Unfortunately each eye only sees half of the available resolution;
but on the plus the glasses are a lot cheaper that Active 3D.
 Active 3Duses battery powered glasses to block out the images to each eye
this causes a higher resolution 3D effect 1080p frame.
Smart TV or not?
 A Smart TV is simply a TV that can do various thing that a normal TV cannot,
some of these features are: Internet browsing, apps (games and information
  applications).
 Another big feature of a Smart TV is that it has a user friendly design (a nice
  menu screen).
 Because of the fact that they are the top of the range at the moment they
will cost a significant amount of money.
