Evolution of BSS Systems
• 1993-2000: Telco networks were initially built with large IT billing systems to process post pay bills
in batch transactions each month
• 2000-2010: Prepay services supported by adding new network based charging systems in a
separate silo, initial data services put a strain on these systems (designed for voice and text)
• 2010+: With the explosion of data centric devices and available services, a new breed of network
software is required to manage the complexity of the resulting transactions in real-time
