Ontario Volunteer Centre Network launches 8th
annual ChangeTheWorld Campaign!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Brampton, ON. April 22, 2015- On April 12th
, the Ontario Volunteer Centre Network (OVCN) launched its 8th
annual ChangeTheWorld- Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge campaign during National Volunteer Week (April
12-18). The provincial campaign runs through until May 24, with the involvement of 24 volunteer centres from
across Ontario participating locally.
ChangeTheWorld is a call to action for youth aged 14 to 18 to volunteer though a wide variety of local initiatives
in their communities. The campaign is funded by the Government of Ontario in partnership with the OVCN. The
provincial goal this year is to engage 37,000 youth to volunteer for at least three hours during the campaign.
ChangeTheWorld is a fantastic way to encourage youth to work towards receiving their 40 hours of community
service, and it is also a great way to learn about services in the community, gain new skills, and contribute to
some great causes. “This is always an exciting time for us”, says Lily Ostos, Youth Engagement Coordinator for
the OVCN. “We have tons of great opportunities for students this year, and some fantastic partnerships in place
that will take this campaign to a whole new level in raising awareness around youth volunteerism, and its
benefits”.
ChangeTheWorld’s official launch event took place on Friday April 10 at College Heights Secondary School in
Guelph. The launch was held in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, to show the strong relationships
the OVCN has built across the province with community organizations that support youth volunteerism, and
youth initiatives. Honourable Michael Chan, the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade and
Honourable Liz Sandals, Minister of Education were both in attendance to kick off the campaign. This is the first
year that the OVCN is partnering with a National organization in promoting youth volunteerism, and youth
opportunities.
The next six weeks are full of fantastic events that youth can get involved in, all across the province. Some
examples of events include: community clean ups, tree planting days, runs, walks, and climbs for various causes,
variety shows, food drives and more!
