Bloodborne Pathogens Training - OSHA Plus
1. Why Is This Training Provided? OSHA mandates training on OSHA regulations for ALL workers at the time of initial assignment to tasks where occupational exposure may take place and at least annually thereafter. Subjects Covered In This Training Program
2. Bloodborne Pathogens: Transmission in Healthcare Settings Occupationalexposures that may result in HIV, HBV, or HCV transmission include needlestick and other sharps injuries; direct inoculation of virusinto cutaneous scratches, skin lesions, abrasions, or burns; andinoculation of virus onto mucosal surfaces of the eyes, nose,or mouth through accidental splashes. In the healthcare setting, bloodborne pathogen transmission occurs predominantly by percutaneous or mucosal exposure ofworkers to the blood or body fluids of infected patients. NOTE:HIV, HBV, and HCV do not spontaneously penetrate intact skin, and airborne transmissionof these viruses does notoccur.
3. Hepatitis B Vaccination: Methods of Compliance Hepatitis B vaccination shall be made available after the employee has received training on the hepatitis B vaccine and within 10 working days of initial assignment to all employees who have occupational exposure unless the employee has previously received the complete hepatitis B vaccination series, antibody testing has revealed that the employee is immune, or the vaccine is contraindicated for medical reasons. If the employee initially declines hepatitis B vaccination but at a later date while still covered under the standard decides to accept the vaccination, the employer shall make available the hepatitis B vaccination at that time. The employer shall assure that employees who decline to accept hepatitis B vaccination offered by the employer sign a mandatory Hepatitis B Vaccine Declination Form.
